Kyosho Lazer ZXR
A while back I bought this Lazer from BENDER and I have been wanting to paint the ZXS shell which came trimmed but still clear. I thought it would look good in Optima livery so I wanted to have a go at it. Also after seeing Darryn (retro r/c) drive his ZXR and him letting me have a feel for the car I knew mine would end up at the track some day. Well that day came today. I set my Lazer up with a 19 turn Komodo and some fresh Hole Shot tyres and hit the Ryde track in Sydney. They weren't running a vintage class today but I was happy to slot in with the modern cars (mainly B44's). I was very suprised just how smooth this car drives and even though the rear end would brake loose a little out of the tighter corners the car was a real pleasure to drive. There's no doubt about it,I think this car could be raced at club level with the 08' model cars real easy.Sure it would be nice to have this car live out its life on a shelf but I prefer racing it at the track.

Jason you have been busy - this is the third forum I've seen my old car today
Looks good - I think you should paint the wing though. |
Hello Mr Bender.
Yes I thought you'd discover the car on a few threads. I have been thinking about painting the rear wing but I might wait till I get one a little wider (like the 501X wing). Are you going to make the trip down for the vintage meet at Ryde? I am opening my house up to a handful of the regulars that are coming from interstate so I might as well offer you a place to stay also. You'd be very welcome. When will we see some more pics of your cars/recent builds? |

As for new builds, I'm trying to convince the missus to let me start collecting the Tamiya Semi Trailers - I don't think she's too happy about that  My latest car is a NIB RCL Incident - very rare - and cost me a fortune - but it's worth it! http://web.aanet.com.au/fir/bender/V...incident10.jpg |
Jas it may interest you to know that Darryn Johnson (retro r/c) here in Canberra is a very big fan of that car you have there. He has a couple if them and some crazy fully loaded and modified version to boot. you should ask him for some pics of it,it looks the ducks.
As for vintage runners, well if you wouldnt be happy enough to borrow one of my Cougar2 buggies then i could possibly sell or trade you a nice car. Either way i could definately get you on the track with something very respectable. I would even have a new unpainted repro bodyset for it too. speaking of repro body sets, Keith at Kamtec is shiping me a few CAT XLS and Lazer ZXS bodies. FREE! What a great guy. |
Jason,
that Lazer looks great ! really suits the original Optima colours. Although I to think the wing needs to be painted, even just white would work nice. You missed out where you finshed with all those new shiny cars to run against? |
I only got through 2 heats before the heavens opened up and a huge electrical and thunderstorm flooded Sydney. Bummer!

I just wanted to run by you guys what you think I could do to increase rear bite on this car out of corners? The rear end was pretty loose and after realising that the alloy rearmost arm retainer was on upside down I have spun it around which has given the rear arms more anti squat. Would be interetsed to hear any of your suggestions on camber link locations etc....

Jason, on the back of the car, are you running both the alloy mounts (including the one that sits just behind the motor)?
If you are then you can replace that one with the kit plastic one - the plastic one is a bit narrower which will give you a bit more toe-in on the back. Also I'd suggest running the rear rear shocks in the middle or outer hole in the suspension arm, and the inner hole on the tower. |
Thanks Jas I'll have to give that a go. By the way I know someone in Melbounre who may part with his LYNX DOBERMAN nip kit if you are looking?
|
Is it a LYnx or Doberman? I'm interested if the price is right ;)

have any of you ever seen or even bought the kyosho zaboon? Its like a cheaper version of the zxr, if so does anyone no where i can get spares for one or if the zxr diff cases fit?
|
The Zaboon is a basic shaft drive car, so closer to the ZX5 than a ZX-R. And Zaboon spares can be ordered from any Kyosho retailer.
And you'll be sitting on a gold mine if you found a supply of Lazer ZX front gearboxes. |

Stripping threads is an easy fix, have a big accident and it will rip the mounting lug completely off one side of the gearbox.

Also have you tried the roll bar? Also I agree with what has been said but the plastic pivot block by the motor in plastic does break quite easily, so may be easier to get some one to machine one with a bit more toe in for the rear of the car. Also I would move the shock mount ball joint one hole outwards, and get Ujs for the rear, as they do make a difference. Also I found that like you if you get the tie rods and wishbones to angle the same together when you move the wishbone up and down then you are half way there. Shocks, the front looks corrct, just reangle the rear to match the front angle - so top hole middle and the bottom wishbone hole either middle or outer. And get another shock tower to beef up the front as Terry is right, the front housings are not replaceable any more so better to beef it up with another shock tower than loose the front. Also get some alloy pole x2 and screw between the wing holder as this will strengthen it and stop damage to the wing holder (as you see they bend without the poles) |

Yup great cars and have a few great results to prove they were great. National champion (Jamie Booth), European champion (Ellis Stafford) and Worlds A finalist several times. Anyway here is a couple of my car. sorry I couldnt find a piccy of the rear, as my camera is shot. You can just make out the bar on the wing in the first picture. The poles are the ones in the middle of the chassis, so not difficult to get your hands on. |
Ok here is something esle for you. I have been dealing with Kamtec for the last couple or months and sent him a Lazer ZX-S LA122 bodyshell, which is an upgraded Optima Mid LWB shell without the lumps on the undertray and an air scoop for the motor and esc.
He has finished the mould and I have the very first shell sitting here and its better than the original, and slightly thicker so will last longer. Plus its a lot cheaper than the kyosho one so have a look at the link. Also Fibre lyte have all of the ZX and ZXR parts (I supplied them all of the items in the 90s as they made them thicker for me) plus the upgrades that I did on the chassis and top deck. Hope this all helps. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Kyosho-Laz...2em118Q2el1247 and http://www.fibre-lyte.co.uk/ |
You can also order genuine Kyosho ZXS shells from time tunnel too
And i have a ZX/ZXR parts lot on e-bay too if anyones interested and i'm sure there's a front gear box case in there somewhere too  would be good for someone who want to run a ZXR to have as spares http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MESE:IT&ih=019 |
Yeah I know Scoobster,I have a small wish list from your spares there-surely you can help me out? Didnt you end up with most of my Bosscat works buggies?
Anyway I decided to brave the wet conditions today and run some cars at my local track. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...erinthemud.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...rinthemud1.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...rinthemud2.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...rinthemud3.jpg |
Well Jason, if i don't get a good price for them as a job lot i will list things one by one i guess and yeah had 3 of your Bosscat Works and still have one which will be going up for sale soon i think, well might be for sale  not sure if i will ever find one as nice as it must be one of the best Bosscat Works in the UK! i have even added the alloy eccentrics to it now just for that finishing touch

The stock shell is VERY thin! worse I think than Yokomo YZ10 shells.. but it does have nice clean lines moulded into it :D
|
I know what you mean, the ZXS shell I have must be one of those-its very thin lexan. Good thing for me I dont turn it on its lid very often. Are there some 870c shells around? I'd love to get one or two of those!

After re looking at these pics your front castor block appears to be in the kit manual setting hole. I think all of the problems could be down to you not altering the front end to the wider setting. Longer ujs are needed.

Anyone has any idea where i can get lazer zxr mkii belts? also trying to find body shell and undertray...any ideas?
|
For the belt you have a cuople of options:
1 - Ebay: items no 360098917495 (easier) 2 - Order at Belt Corporation of America (follow the instruction on this link http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/s...=94239&page=53 ;)) Zx-r bodies and udertrays are really extremely hard to find .. so you may: 1 - Get an Optima mid LWB body repro here www.kamtec.co.uk (also on ebay) 2 - Get a Lazer Zx-s body repro always on www.kamtec.co.uk but will probably fits right only with the Welshy40 custom chassis ( is it right Whelsy :wub ? ) I also found a shop in Switzerland that sells some Zx-r body reproductions, or at least seems because unfortunately there is no online photo. Here's the link: www.li-po.ch Articles no: Zx-r - Kosmos - Karosserie LAZER-ZX =LA-52 1:10 LH064B (Body) - Kosmos - Wanne LAZER-ZX =LA-53 1:10 LH064A (Undertray) Original Zx - Kosmos - Karosserie LAZER =LA-36 1:10 LH041 Lazer Alpha - Kosmos - Karosserie LAZER ALPHA = LZ-2 1:10 LH071 By the way, original Lazer body are available also here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/trades_model.asp?cid=48650 Bye Ema |

ww.kamtec.co.uk does a ZX shell and ZX-S shell. The ZX-S shell fits but you need to move the servo in further towards the belt. I redesigned a slimmer and better balanced chassis specifically for this and www.fibre-lyte.co.uk do this as well. All info is on www.radiocontrolzone.com from about page 20 onwards. The shells are better quality than the original and last a lot longer. also I hear that some one has made a mold for the ZXR but am unsire if it will last long enough for more to be made. As soon as I know I will update you. |
