My Cat2k - Race Ready....
Well it was finally ready late Saturday only for it to stay this way due to the weather!
I must have tried about 8 different combinations of Oil's and Piston's before getting it to "feel" about right, ended up with Losi Natural pistons and 35 & 30 oil which seemed ok - hopefully i'll find out one day! So it's a 2000EC but with a 3K shell, Associated Shocks, Brushless etc so a bit of a hybrid! http://www.anything-cars.com/images/...s/DSC00102.JPG http://www.anything-cars.com/images/...s/DSC00103.JPG http://www.anything-cars.com/images/...s/DSC00104.JPG http://www.anything-cars.com/images/...s/DSC00105.JPG http://www.anything-cars.com/images/...s/DSC00106.JPG |
Looks good Nick!
I am doing the same thing, although I think I will end up with Losi Shocks and shafts with a 98 Carbon chassis, as it will let me fit the brushless in much easier! I will post some pics when mine is getting ready. |
Looks good Nick, the cat really wouldnt look out of place in a national A final:thumbsup:
|
Is that a 5.5 Nick, and what gearing will you be running it on. I haven't got a clue where to start!
M |
looking good Nick, although i never did like the look of the laydown shocks. Much prefer my upright cat2000 ones!

just noticed all the blu-tak!! lol
might have needed more than that in the snow!! Like a black bin bag and some gaffer tape! |
get rid of them Gay Yellow Wheels Nick !!!!:woot::woot:
|
don't listen to wraggy, yellow looks cooool!!:p That car looks the nuts mate, did you do the shell again??
|

Seriously though if i didn't have 40 sets of BB Yellow wheels i wouldn't run them, but it's cheaper this way :p |

Thanks for that though dude, i was quite happy with how it came out - yeah i did the shell on Saturday, did one for Trish's D4 too which he was happy with, i've still only done 4 now but they're getting neater each time  |

Reading the Manual they suggest something like a 17/95 with an 11T so with Brushless and 4200's etc i would guess it'd be around the same? I'd guess you'd normally gear down 2/3 for brushless but due to the cells you can probably go back up another 2/3 to get back to around the same.... The manual was written for the Cat when we were probably running 2000's
|
is it a sintered or not Nick? sintereds are geared a few teeth higher than non-sintered as well.
|
Yeah it's sintered, i'm just going by what the likes of Novak usually suggest where say an 11T is similar to a 5.5/6.5 they suggest slightly lower gearing i believe....
I'm sure it'll be ok - or i'll at least find a way to make it work! |
Thats pretty low gearing Nick. I agree with the others in that you will be able to gear up a bit.
Might be worth trying to compare some overall ratio's with other 4wd cars. Not sure on what the Cat is, but you could probably find out. HTH Mark |
Yeah i've got an 89 spur on at the moment just because it was on the car, so i've put a 17t pinion on and will see how it runs this weekend hopefully, as long as the temp is ok and it lasts a good 6 mins or so i'll be happy, i'll keep checking it but you can usually tell straight away if the gearing's wrong...
|
when we leave you for dust on the straight!! lol

Is the slipper clutch (it does have one doesn't it?) going to handle the extra wellie of a modern system?
Elliott. |
Yeah its got one. Rather than having the spur gear clamped between the plates, it is behind the spur on the Cat.
Not sure how well it works compared to a double sided slipper on the B4 for example. I was thinking about modifying it to have a double slipper instead! |
That's SOOOOO old fashioned. :)
I guessed as much. |

I used a Cat 2000 until recently, with modern cells (4200 IB) and a good brushed system (Orion 10x1) and for me, the weak point of the transmission is the blade system.
You have to check the wear at almost every run to avoid destroying the diff outdrives. But what a car on astro or carpet ! |

If i can get enough of them through various donations i'm currently receiving, i'll probably have to replace them every other run or so..... |
I have still got the sliders. Not sure how they will hold up! LOL
Well here's to hoping! M. |
I was running my 2000 ec up until last year at the Nationals using 4200's and 9 single v motor and replaced them every other meeting. I only ran the 6 nationals and still was running well. Is this a return to off road Nick i havent seen you race since The Euros at teeside back in the 90's. I think i remember you making the A final that day,
|
Lets post setups for our cats, in this section. I hope my slider driveshafts last out, although I will running the car on carpet to start with. Should be good.
Anyone got a starting setup with Schumey Shocks? |

Mark, good plan - Shall we start a new thread for Set-ups?? I played with the Schumacher shocks and ended up finding that Losi Natural pistons with 40 and 35wt was about right! Not sure on Schumacher pistons, but maybe 2 hole and 35/40wt? |
Cheers buddy. I read on another thread that Assoc No.3 pistons were all the rage. I also changed to Losi Shock Shafts since they were longer and gave lots more downtravel. I hope this improves the cars bump handling.

I tried Associated No3's but it felt way too soft to be honest, if you can get hold of some Losi pistons i'd definitely recommend trying the White/Natural ones as it felt far better with those on (only on the bench, but you can get a good idea if it feels "right" or not) :) |
Setups for my old cat 2000 are probably one thing i'll never forget!!
Schumcaher Shocks Associated No3 pistons all round 40wt front, 35 rear. Blue front spring, Grey rear Rear roll bar. Worked virtually everywhere! |

Was the rest of it kit setup? Cheers Mark |
i heard that the cat almost got body slammed

rear top link (depending on bracket) Top inner on kit - however, carbon had an extra pair of holes above kit. Rear toe - 3 deg. Personally i preferred outboard - plastic inner blocks and 3 deg hubs - but some ran alloy inner blocks and 0 hubs. These were for "laydown" cars btw! |

Thought i'd just quickly update this - I ran the car at Lee's CML Raceway on Saturday just to see how it went and surprisingly it was pretty good! This was just on worn yellows, and the track was a tad damp in patches (Mainly all Astro).
The suspension seemed about right to be honest, which was again Associated Shocks, Losi Pistons all round with 35wt Front and 30wt Rear. |
A guy down the street has one of these or he's getting one
when it comes out. He had a 501x original before. I like shumacher stuff, easpecially the ball-cups very stiff. |
