RHR DIRT - 10th Off Road Clay in the UK
 

A new 1/10th off road clay track has been born in the UK - RHR DIRT is based at the same venue as the well respected regular BRCA National venue, RobinHood Raceway.


650 tons of dirt went into the new track which resides right next to the existing all-weather astroturf track - with a brand new 30ft rostrum and new race control.




There's a track cover to protect it from the worst the English weather can throw at it - and protect race meetings during intermittent rain showers.

The track owners have agreed a control tyre to be used at all meetings on the track, which has been tested extensively, to make racing fair and cost effective - more on this to be announced later.

The first BIG race on the new track will be the oOple invernational - yes, it's on DIRT.

It's clay, James can probably tell you exactly where it's from but I believe he tested a few samples before choosing one.

It is pure 'blue' clay - the same as Vaasa, we did LOTS of research and tested around a dozen samples and actually acquired genuine clay samples from some of the best dirt tracks around the world to compare so we made sure we had exactly the right stuff :thumbsup: it took a while to find in the quantity we required but we sourced it from a brickworks.. We started the project in October and hence have had very limited testing on 'dry' clay, the track works very well when damp and grip levels are excellent unlike some other samples of clay that were tested, its just a fantastic surface to drive on, take my word for it :D
An enormous amount of credit must go to RICHARD COATES, STEVE PIERCE and BEN JEMISON who have put many, many hours in to the project so far, with assistance from Graham Hunter and Stu Evans, the track and venue aren't finished yet but we have the full RHR team including Graham North, Jim Dixon, Shane Foot and co available now to get the venue finished off into something really special and unique which will officially open in JUNE :thumbsup:

It looks amazing so pat on the back to all invloved and I would love to do the first event,but without trying to be a stick im the mud(or clay lol)but is there any chance there would any way of getting a wheelchair up on the rostrum? Soz to keep asking ppl this.

If wheelchair or similar access is required please contact me and I will make sure something is arranged. Some of you may remember that the original Blyth site only developed due to Phil Allcroft and family who often uses a wheelchair, we haven't had anyone request it so far but yes we would of course come up with a solution (the ramp angle would be a little steep due to the height of the rostrum, but a cherry picker or similar can be arranged as long as we know :thumbsup: )

At last, another club build a propper track..DIRT, non of this silly fake grass buisness:thumbsup:, were are people going to run there motor now:lol:.

how are you finding it drains? having put the clay straight on top of the grass/existing compacted top layer, they did that at basildon for the worlds track, It caused a bit of a problem down the line....

So what tyres are going to work? Having never before raced on dirt it will be interesting to see what the control tyre is?

Would think it would likely be PL Holeshot or Bowtie. But then again, it could be a AKA tyre or maybe even a new tyre from a new company?

I only ever race 1/8th nitro on dirt, but would think it would be something of the above.

Provisionally the Beer Race and madness will be on the astro track, the new track needs respect!

My guess is a new tyre from an existing manufacturer - with a deal done on the sales of that tyre to profit both parties. This is not a bad thing, it would make sense to me. but then again I might be totally wrong!

I'm sure they used the native dirt on site for TEMAC, I went there several times - its sand percentage was too high so it dug up badly and that with a little rain made for a very a rough surface, also I believe their major drainage problem was that the track was built on a slope so naturally all the water drained to the bottom where it settled and got pretty bad. Our clay is on top of the existing very sandy ground, we have tested every month through the winter so if we can do that the summer will be no problem, some parts of the clay are nearly 5 feet above the existing ground level hence any water runs off and drains away - plus we have have our massive track cover like Vaasa had, showers are no problem at all, its cloudbursts or sudden very heavy (proper rain!) showers that would be the problem but they cause issues on every surface.. Besides if there is some sort of weather catastrophe all we need do is walk 40 feet to the astro track hah! :thumbsup:

That announcement will be made in due course, it will be one tyre so its fairer and cheaper for everyone..

I apreciate the mention as a track build helper but my 0.0037% contribution was just about painting, the other lads have busted their asses off.
