Website re-design?

I had a spare hour this morning so I've knocked up a new design for the clubs website. I hope that's ok and I'm not treading on anyones toes?

The current site http://www.neamotorsport.co.uk/ just doesn't do it for me. The website should make people want to attend, it should be really easy for people to find what they're looking for, and most of all it should be up to date.

Anyway, this is what I've put together.

http://www.web-development-server.com/neam.jpg

A things about my proposal.

The website would be content managed, in simple terms that means almost all aspects of the site will be able to be modified easily by logging into the site.

The race calendar will be an actual calendar, and will be managed by someone logging into the admin interface and entering a date. The system will deal with showing the date in the right place on the calendar.

I came up with a feature called Driver Profile. Essentially, when someone is a member of the club they'll get a login. The driver can log into the website and upload their own images of their car etc. They'll also be able to enter information such as they car's they're running, ESC, motor and other settings. I think it'll be a good feature so people can see what members are running, especially new people.

There'd be a latest news section, again managed by the content management system.

And finally, a slideshow at the top showing some really cool pictures.

I think it's important to get lots of videos on the site as well to entice people into wanting to come to the club.

My aim is for the club to have the best, most comprehensive website of all the clubs in the country!

I although think the club should take advantage of facebook and twitter to let people know it exists.

Again, it's something to talk about on Sunday.

and for those that have not realised yet, yes, I do this for a living.

Looks good , I agree with the Facebook and twitter thing as you see alot of clubs, shops and companys saying check out our ...... Page.

Has the club really got a grant of 1m ? Or was it just mock up news ?

I've quickly converted the layout into a web page so you can get a better idea of how it looks in your browser.

There's already a facebook page. I sent the login details for it to Chris p awhile back, if someone wants them I'll dig them out when I have 5 mins spare. If you want all the logos etc send me your email address and I'll send them across.

For anyone that's interested, I've built most of the driver profiles area.

If you click any of the driver profiles link on the website you'll kind of see how it's operates. I think it'll be a good feature and will enable existing and new members to have an insite into other drivers, especially some of the more experienced ones.

Currently all the driver profiles are managed through a login to an admin interface (by the site administrator), but when I get time I'll add a section onto the site itself for drivers to login and manage their own profile, that way we don't need someone managing the website all the time.

I'm open to any comments and suggestions.

Right, I'm off to do this list of chors the wife has left me!

EDIT: I forgot to mention. A driver can add multiple cars to their profile, so when someone looks at their profile it'll list both cars and images for each. Great for those that have both 2wd and 4wd.

Liking the driver profiles, not sure if they will help
Other people or attract new people but its a good section anyway, website is looking good, whos going to start with their profile? Best result etc?

littlened 29-01-2012 04:25 PM

I think that's the integration of the driver profiles done. Once we get sorted we can start entering peoples email addresses into the system to people can start logging in and updating their profile ready for when the site is ready to go live.

I've also managed to get the calendar done as well. So an admin can enter dates into the CMS, and the site handles showing the dates in the calendar, with a click through to more information about the specific event. It'll be great for letting people know when racing is on, but also good for letting people know about other events, and also how to buy tickets, or register etc.

Sorry, I didn't seek permission for images as they won't be making it into the live site, they have just been used to help design the site and get a good look and feel.

However if we have permission we may keep your image.

neiloliver 29-01-2012 05:50 PM

Yes of course. :)

A few things for the website.

Can someone send me a list of dates for club racing and any other events, and I'll drop them into the calendar.

Is anyone interested in adding their driver profile to the site? If so, drop me a PM with your name and e-mail address and I'll set you up an account on the site. It'll be good for testing to see how people get on with it, and if it works or if we need more fields to hold more information?

These SC10's the club has, is someone able to make them ready to go in a few weeks time? I'd like to put something on the website to attract beginners by saying they can attend and have a go of one of the SC10's completely free in their first week, and after that they can still come and use them for a £5 (maybe £3 if they're shit?). It's just really to get people to come up and have a go, hopefully get hooked.

As I mentioned tonight, we can use leaflets to drive people to the site, but then the site has to hook them, so it needs to be as informative as possible.

If I can get hold of them I'll also stick membership forms on the site for download as well.

I'm open to any suggestions. I think someone made a good suggestion of doing a write-up after each night, which I think is a great idea. Also maybe a couple of articles on how best to setup your car for Seaham.

Good night last night as well.

Dates are on the club website.........

http://www.neamotorsport.co.uk/

and all but 1 SC10 are ready to run, i think as said in the AGM meeting that the broken SC10 requires a new chassis.

The only thing i would say about using the SC10's is they really need the right tires for use in the club to be better at racing.

Just a thought but could we run a heat in the regionals with the club SC10's ???

littlened 31-01-2012 04:54 PM

I had another play around today, it might be a good idea, it might not even work properly but...

http://www.web-development-server.com/tracks.jpg

It's an area where drivers (once logged in) can make track layout suggestions by simply drawing within an area on the page, pop in a name and some notes and then save it.

The public and everyone else can see a list of tracks and click to view them, and potentially vote for it or leave a comment?

I've asked Chris P to have a look at it and see how it works and whether or not it's worth while keeping in the site when it goes live.

I'm also considering another feature where by drivers can record their car setups and classify them under things like venue, indoor/outdoor, low grip/high grip, and be able to search their own setups and others. I know some people keep setup sheets, but this would give you your setups in one place, be able to share them, and search them. I'm still thinking about this one though, because different cars have different setups, so it might be a little too complex (not that I can't do it, just might not be able to allocate that much time).

As usual, comments or suggestions are welcome.

I reckon you can't do it!

I've mocked this up, it's only for the front, just to give an idea of how it might work.

http://www.web-development-server.com/setupsheet.jpg

I'm just wondering if this would work? Obviously each sheet would need to be different for each type of car, but there's not that many being run at the club really is there?

The idea being that when you've logged in, you can create a setup sheet by choosing the sheet from a list that matches your car, you go through the sheet marking off your settings, then save it. You can then later return and create another sheet (even for another car), until you start to build up a collection of setups.

Others on the site can do a search or browse through all the setup sheets.

Am liking the idea's Shaun, good stuff mate:)
