how to convert a touring into a rally car
i was thinking of getting a touring car and convert it in to a rally car how should i do that
|
Well you want to raise the ground clearance to a minimum of 15mm by adding longer shocks. You also want to ensure that shrapnel from the road can't come in, so make a chassis cover.
You would also need to modify the suspension arms to cope with the extra height. It's easier to buy an old tamiya ta01/02 or the mighty TB01 as they make good rally cars |
I was going to use a Speed Passion RS1 Touring Car and put 60mm shocks and rase the the ride height and add rally tires
|
And I picked that car as it is cheap and so is the parts
|
Looks like it will be a good candidate. As I mentioned before, just check the arms etc are not binding when you add the longer shocks.
|
could always get the mighty HPI RS4 Rally..............(been discontinued a while now though)
http://archive.hpiracing.com/kits/rally/r-m.htm Ive got one begging to be rebuilt ;) |
hi the rs4 looks good do u know where to get one from i have looked on ebay

Hi,
If you look in the ansmann thread,i converted a are-2 into a rally car.....really good car for this as it has metal diffs, and telescopic drive shafts........cut a bit of the chassis away for more down droop, and put longer ball joints on the bottom of the shocks..have about 30mm of ground clearance fully extended.....its a shame there is no where in the UK that does 1/10th rallying,or rallycross......would be a good, cheap class.... cheers simon |
Well czech guys race stage rallies and most common mods are - dremeled off droop bits on chassis, replacement of shocks for something slightly longer, dirt box and rally wheels
|
200mm kit for a tc3 if you can find one, the car itself is cheap, albeit slightly old, but still makes a good rally weapon

Here you go,same as mine...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ANSMANN-AR...item4842b459c2.
|
How does the Tamiya DF-03 RA rate? Might work out expensive compared to the RS-1/ARE-2/LRP Blast TC etc.

i think it is just the origanal mr4tc in your link Heres a chance to show off mine, some of the tc parts are getting hard to find, some of the 'rally' parts are like rocking horse poo! http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/3581/rally001.jpg By andypearson at 2011-11-16 http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/3405/rally003.jpg By andypearson at 2011-11-16 http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2213/rally004.jpg By andypearson at 2011-11-16 http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3768/rally005.jpg By andypearson at 2011-11-16 |
I would look for a Tamiya TB01 the only thing which made it second best to my rs4 was the weight. It was always much tougher. Now I have a brushless in one its my rally car of choice.
You can also get most parts for the tb01 quite easily... Although it doesn't seem to ever break :) |
Yeah thats definately an MR4 Rally, the rally version had a back bone which was screwed into and down the centre of the chassis which also had a clear cover protecting the belt, that and the other easiest give away is the servo location, the servo on the rally is stood upright and at an angle like in your pics...................:p
Rally http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachme...ar-rally01.jpg The MR4 TC (custom) had a laid down style top deck and servo was also laid down on its side with a little cut out in the chassis ............. Touring http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=12193 PS that car looks brand new !!! :woot: |
Will a hard case lipo fit in it tb01
|
i was going to get this http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=359807 what do u think

Only thing I wonder about are the driveshafts: http://www.racing-cars.com/pp/New_Ca...1/RS00288.html The Ansmann ARE-2 has telescopic ones, great for extended suspension travel. |

All in all a really tough car, so the issues with fitting the battery (in stock form anyway) don't spoil the fun you'll have with this car  |
I'm newis to rc what is a

The TB01 cheap to run, cheap to fix it has the inner body aswell so will keep most of the crap out of it, hasnt got high ground clearance but still an awesome rally car................ |
Yup go for the tb01
|
Some recent pics,..its nearly finished...got a kyosho cover, and a fan for the motor as they tend to get a bit hot,due to the constant wheelspining etc,and not much airflow...been rallying on hard gravel surface and the car has held up really well..great fun!!

What are the wheels and tyres? Tamiya Rally Blocks? |
i think they r Fastrax 1/10th Touring Wheel/ Rally Block
|
Hi,
Yes the car is an ansmann are 2,,,very good to convert to rally, because of metal diffs and telescopic driveshafts..wheels and tyres are fastrax,,,,, |
I must check out Fastrax for those rally blocks.
I found this Carisma M40S Audi Quattro (click photo to go to Modelsport): http://www.modelsport.co.uk/_images/...rd/ca69768.jpg Modelsport also have a sale on a number of Tamiya rally cars, the most authentic being the FF03 (thus front wheel drive) Honda Civic (the old style one): http://www.modelsport.co.uk/_images/...dard/58467.jpg |
Didn't William Mitcham win the 10th RallyX nats with a TTech T1R?
The very same one I have sat at home  |
I have had a annsman be for and firstly the spur gear is hard to get out and I diden like the manual that showed u how to fix it or build it. Is this one any good
|
I've been idly looking at the FF03 as a rally option. It has a few things going for it - sealed gearbox, adjustable wheelbase (the short 233mm setting would suit the HPI Peugeot 106 and Saxo rally shells), and it's a Tamiya (endless parts and hop-ups, and excellent suspension).
I've been trying to find what the practical maximum ride height for it is, and could you fit a 201X slipper on it? |
I think the FF03 has the laydown front shocks which might be a problem?
I have a cheap tamiya DF03 chassis which i will be selling...all there works perfectly, oil shocks etc just needs a tidy..£60 posted... Cheers simon |
A short clip of the rally car in a gravel carpark.....it is very rough and the car handles it very well......

Standing in an unseasonably warm forest in early November for Rally GB inspired me into building an RC rally as a bit of a project.
As this was going to be a project I wanted to avoid buying a purpose designed kit, such as the DF03. I looked at the seemingly popular TT01 or even converting an old T2 Xray that I have kicking around. I discounted them on price and suitability grounds. Instead I picked up a scruffy TC3 from ebay then source AE’s TC3 rally conversion parts, less the rare (read expensive) 200mm arms, a set of rally blocks and Fastrax’s TC3 splash cover. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...89492565_n.jpg The Focus WRC body shell arrived yesterday, so that’ll keep me amused over Christmas. I’m pondering none Ken Block colour schemes at the moment. Henning Solberg’s Orange entry of the last few seasons looks like a candidate. Mounting the body will require some longer rear body posts. The standard AE posts are really short and weedy. I’m struggling to find either longer posts or extensions that’ll securely fit over their 4mm diameter. Everything seems to be designed for 5-6mm posts (Sausage up an entry springs to mind). Any suggestions? |
