ASKay's shell splog

So I have been encouraged to start a thread for my shell/s, I have a very nice airbrush setup using an old Olympos airbrush and a good quality badger for course stuff.

My first effort was using RCS graphic worx masks on my DEX410R body, fantastic masks as far as i am concern...

http://www.oople.com/forums/picture....pictureid=4498

my next one will be with masks cut on my cheap cutter, getting prepared for that one now...

Got a Cougar, another DEX410R, a DEX210, and a SC10 4x4 to paint, + thinking of redoing my CAT too...

Thanks for looking

jonmiller 10-11-2011 11:07 PM

Hey buddy, nice to see them put to good use :) they fit that rango nicely.

gainsy 11-11-2011 08:27 AM

Very nice work

Mike Parker 11-11-2011 09:52 AM

That looks absolutely fantastic mate, the placement of the masks & colours really sets the shell off :)

eyeayen 11-11-2011 11:04 AM

As I said to you in the other thread, love the black and the pink, the design looks real clean and crisp, good lines, will show up well on the track.

Good to see you've started your own thread too, will be good to see the others when they're done.

If anyone is thinking of getting a cutter, the Craft Robo is all that great for playing with....:thumbsup::thumbsup: especially for 70 quid....

gainsy 12-11-2011 08:12 PM

That's excellent
Hmmm might have to treat myself to 1 of those cutters for christmas :D

Thanks Gainsy, for the money, i think it is the bargain of the century....

Trying an outline next time..... found the button on the software now :woot:

eyeayen 13-11-2011 09:47 AM

Really lovin' those distressed lines, that looks super cool !!! Nice job, quite dark though. You're doing well with both the painting and the cutter !

What software are you using ?

gingapaint 13-11-2011 12:00 PM

looks like you're getting cracking results with the cutter, that looks ace!
It probably only looks dark because of the matching background!! :woot:

Thanks everyone :)

At the moment, I am using a mixture of Paint (Windows 7), Inscape, and the free software with the cutter 'Cutting Master2' ..... Paint for basic shapes... Still finding my way around Inscape...

andys 13-11-2011 07:01 PM

Looking ace fella.

I got the Robo too, after learning about it on here :)
What are you using as mask ?

Can't wait to have a go with mine...

Hiya Andy, looking forward to seeing the results :)

The masking material i used is this, http://www.graphicair.co.uk/categori...ol-Ultra-Mask/

however it is pretty thin, and the adhesive is very very low tack, i am wondering if i want somthing with a little more staying power...

eyeayen 13-11-2011 08:08 PM

Masking film is meant to be low tack, the only disadvantage of the super ultra extremely not really stick at all low tack stuff is it's designed to be used on illustration board, i.e. you put it over your drawing and cut it out on the board.

The trouble with what you're not using it for is it won't hold well on the back while you're cutter does it's stuff. Probably okay for big shapes but anything fine or text wise it might weed itself out, if that happens it's likely to get stuck under the blade and then the blade won't cut the rest of the job properly.

Aside that though you shouldn't need anything more sticky. I use paint mask which is a bit thicker and is designed to take solvent paint so it's handy if I need to mask any chrome logo's or anything. The stuff you're using will crinkle up if you apply solvent to thick so be careful with that.

Thanks for the info

Do you have a link to which I could have a look/order the specific paint mask you have used?

eyeayen 14-11-2011 04:54 PM

The stuff I've used in the past is 'Premium paint Mask', I think I got my last lot from Cherwell Sign supplies. You can get it from loads of different places. I'd contact a few and ask for a sample. THe one I use is transparent grey, a very light black grey. My mates use one which is more of a brown grey, doesn't hold on the backing as good so they struggle to cut small stuff. I've done some real tiny lettering on mine before !

Oramask 810 is a good quality vinyl mask., and cuts really well. Might be worth a look...

I think it was the argument with the rostrum, the car lost..... :woot:

Decided we need a wind sock at TORCH for SC heats, as to decide if you go low or high....

the argument was actually captured on vid by Mr Mango, and posted on U tube... :)

Kewl ! Will have to pop up to TORCH and see it in the flesh, looks nice, you should have put more green on it, great colour !

That made me laugh, especially calling John Mr MANGO, classis

TYPO honest , If i am right, I also totalled his front end on his 410 at the weekend, after I lost control on a short straight.... :o

So to clarify on the mask to sticker ratio.....:woot:

http://www.oople.com/forums/picture....pictureid=4576
and
http://www.oople.com/forums/picture....pictureid=4575

If I recall the castrol, HKS, Bridgestone etc.... stickers came with the SC10 4x4 sticker set....., so just filled out some of the blank canvas with them....

Got two more shells to do in the SC section, one more Protech Flowtek shell, and also the bog standard SC104x4 shell, so maybe get a little more adventurous....

eyeayen 05-12-2011 12:50 PM

Ah I see, that's a bit more realistic, although I think you should try ALL of them in paint next time  Don't do carbon with a mask though... it's a nightmare

Still good efforts sir !

With some clever photography and it the right light and location that would look like a proper Dakar rally type vehicle, sponsors well placed, nice 'team' feel to the paint job.

Very good !

ASKay 07-12-2011 11:19 PM

Thanks all for the encouragment....

Got a little ambitious.... and paid the price for not preparing....

Happy with the effect, but there are too many errors for my liking, such as masks bleeding etc.... thinking i will try this again, but using liquid mask, as i really like the design, just badly implimented....

anyway here are some picks of my take on the 'art car' bringing a little culture to 'big dumb trucks'....:woot:

SUPER COOL mate !!!

Lovin' the design. Very "designer".

With reference to your mistakes and bleed throughs, for this design I reckon the cutter is easier and quicker. I'd probably just tend to not put the masks over those sort of area's. I can see one on the corner of the bonnet and also the rear of the cab. Have the colour ending before it goes over the tricky curve and you might find it works ? Of course I could be completely wrong but this would take you hours to cut out in LM...

ASKay 29-12-2011 07:59 PM

So more practise, and this time I have left alone the cutter.....

This is my first time I have used Liquid Mask (never before ) before used masking tape etc... Anyway RCS Graphic Worx Liquid mask, no issues.... surprised how easy it is too work...

eyeayen 29-12-2011 09:23 PM

If you're lights were a bit brighter that fantastic candy red area on the back would show up more :p

Looks cool. Quite complicated design, very different to your normal style, change is good !

Mike Parker 29-12-2011 09:32 PM

The SC shell is sweeeet as!! As far as the errors go with the bleeds mate they are hardly noticable  was it done by vinyl??

Thanks Ian, the design has been somthing I had being thinking about for some time, but not had the confidence to try with masking tape/cutter, but having seen what others can get with liquid mask, i thought id try it... as i like the HB shell on the SX3 which is what I race, so I have ordered a couple more HB shells (wanted to make sure it fits prior to shelling out, excuse the pun ), so Ill get my thinking cap on for seeing what to do next :)

Thanks Mike, it is a real mix of tamiya tape (3 different widths), vinyl, and straight masking tape, I have changed the back with some spraying on the outside which has imporved the look completely in my mind:)... Just needed to take more time to make sure the masks were burnished into the corners :(
