Drive pin covers..
Hey chaps,
I have had a rear drive pin snap/come loose for the 2nd time now. And think it may have destroyed a new lipo pack  What cover's are people using on there drive pins-I know some kits came with a black cover type thing. But I got mine used and did not come with them. I have been using it uncovered for months. But only recently had issues and want to make/buy a cover for it to help. I have heard of using heat shrink and so on, but was wanting a more robust method any ideas?? cheers gents Jamie |
Used heat sink tube myself , as recomended by a regular Rango runner
|
Think so people use drive shaft boots. TSR are a name I've heard mentioned for this .
|
Following identical problem after two runs when I bought the car ver. 1 in 2010, I systematically put some heat shrink tube - no issues ever since...
|
Any pics :)
|
Yeah ideally after a more durable method if possible. As hear the heat shrink can split sometimes and easily let the pin wear through. What size heat shrink did you guys use?
|
is this 1.5mm black pind or 2mm silver?
follow this guide http://www.team-durango.com/blog/200...ing-your-cvds/ |
2mm
Are brilliant cheers chris-Forot about that tips part! Was looking for the New Cover's and they come with that. Perfect cheers buddy, need to order a few bits for it anyway will add them cheers. |
hey guys ... this is a very critical part of the car. probably the most
using heat shrink to secure the drive pin is not enough. mine (09 spec) went through the lipo with spectacular outcome  i believe the dex410R had a plastic collar. some of you might have seen the pics below from my club thread. good thing some quick-thinking club members helped to separate the saddle packs so damage was contained to just one cell. http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachme...d-durango2.jpg http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachme...d-durango3.jpg |

indeed.
and the guys who helped pretty much went "not again!" because it happened to another club member 2 yrs back! good thing is .. i have a kit still new in box, waiting to be used for spares. just never expected to use the parts so quickly! |
Good god thats scary!!
|
So will the pin covers stop the pin from coming out total?

Seems like every one of these threads, all over the place, in which people complain about cvd pins working their way out - almost always can be pinpointed to a routine lack of maintenance or lack of checking over the car prior to running and/or the lack of proper cvd building as per the mark christopher link ^^^ (which it seems should be common sense), or that nobody knows what threadlock is. |
kayce - i don't dispute that. in fact, totally agree that it is a rare thing to happen.
just wanted to highlight the fact that when doing routine maintenance and checks of the car, there are some parts that are more important than others and this particular one should be at the very top of the list. |
it happened to me 2 years ago. i have the fire on video somewhere. didnt destroy the shell though, managed to remove it on time. i still have one intellect 5200 cell which is no use to me without the other half. the plastic collar on my v3 is a must. just wish it was on the v1
|
i must add i had 2 grub screws in each joint and threadlock on each screw but still the 1.5mm pins seemed to work there way out. i guess thats why they upgraded them to the 2mm pins
|
As I mainly run 1/8th nitro, I never had the chance or the funds free to spend on my DEX410 to replace the worn parts-which are the driveshafts ect. And the fact It only had 1 grub screw. And not 2 like the tip says, Im now running leccy in the winter. So will have available funds to replace the worn bits, and get the covers on and so on.
As before I had to put my 1/8th stuff 1st I never had the funds to do so, but yeah alot is down to prep. And its a very *Dangerous* point on the buggy, as shown above 1 fault could be very costly.. |
To secure the pin I cut TD 310039 part.
It s perfect fit it also work for the front and rear driveshaft. |

Regular maintenance and checks do help, but on my TRF201 I had these pins come out halfway in the first 5 minutes of a trackday I went to recently. If it happened on your DEX410 might be enough to start eating into the case of your battery? :eh?: In the case of my TRF201 it just means I had to pull over or I'd lose the pin - which is not widely available. To solve it, I fitted some heatshrink around it and I didn't have the problem the rest of the day. It seems like quite a cheap solution to a problem that can grow to massive proportions in the wrong circumstances. |
I think the moral of the story is anyone running a car without the rear prop cover (410r) needs to be told and shown this thread just incase they are not aware of this hazard
So anyone sees a car without one let them know for their sake and ours as a sport.then all should be good.:) Rc does not need any injuries |
Yeah think your right, it may not stop it but will certainly help. I have been meaning to get one for months.
But as I only used to race it once a month, I used to forget. And didnt realise the cover's come in that diff plastics kit. Either way that will be on order today! cheers for all the tips chaps. |

Sometimes I feel as if I'm the only one on the planet that's never had one work loose (knock on wood ;)). To me, it's about like driving a 1:1 automobile and being baffled each time it runs out of petrol. |

Thanks mate... I think if we do this it will deffo help address the issue:thumbsup:

Sorry admin but thought this needed bumping
Put the saver ring cover thing on!!! Lol If you own a 410 and don't know what I am bangin on about read all this thread it's only short:lol: |
I had big trouble trying to fit those rings to my driveshafts even after taking a knife to it like Jimmy did in the review. 1 finally went on and the other snapped. I haven't had an issue with not running them now...
A bit of heatshink is the best bet and make sure the grub screw in the linkage is flat against the cutout in the pin + threadloc it in. Just a tiny drop will secure it. |
If they do come loose with just heatshrink I have seen them wear a hole through The shrink and the pin then still pops out!
Did you have the saver the correct way around? As mine just popped on with quite a push. |
the grub screw can't be in right if it does come loose. I haven't run a cover or heat shrink on either of mine for 6 months now and never had a problem. As long as that cutout in the pin is straight and the grub screw is threadloc'd in there I don't know how it could pop out
|
If the joint runs dry and gets hot it loosens the TL and the grub screw may come out.
If you cannot spend 10 seconds putting on the proper TD item please don't spend minutes posting on here against a good idea that will help keep people/property safe Cheers Hope you can understand how this thread was helpfull |
I agree, my 1st issue regarding it was the pin snapped I think. Well-I found a small remain that worked its way into my motor and stopped it. So it could have snapped the 1st time, but not 100% sure tbh.
2nd time was likely user error, I have ordered some new pins and will take some time this weekend redoing mine. And adding the cover's too. Its a useful thread though, i'm sure it had made other's double check theres! |
