Spring Paint

This is for anyone that's removed the paint from shock springs...

What did you use???

How long did it take???

What do you now use to quickly identify the different rates???

Chrislong 19-02-2008 03:32 PM

Nitromors paint stripper.

its evil stuff, don't get it on anything - it'll burn skin, and the fumes hurt eyes. It'll literally melt anything but the metal.

If you hang your springs on string and dangle them in, you should be able to make it melt all but the colour on the first coil.

Or you can cut 5mm of coloured tubing (off wire) and wind it up the coil. I do this on cut springs so not to confuse them with uncut (I have done it)

Lee 19-02-2008 04:26 PM

You are the RC stig though chris, i dont reckon it would burn you:woot:

GRIFF55 19-02-2008 06:07 PM

I use automotive black matt paint, very fine mist and mask up the last coil. Stays on through quite a bit of abuse if you scotchbrite the spring first:thumbsup:

footey 19-02-2008 06:09 PM

Back in the day of the CAT2000 EC, it was done to create a slightly lighter spring rate.

But I'm doing it to simply mask the make of spring being used.

Shane, some say the paint actually stiffens the spring, and others do it so others cant see what they are using:confused:

lol.... are we all really becoming so sad :eh?:

_sleigh_ 19-02-2008 06:22 PM

Not sad, just why promote/advertise a product that's not made by your main sponsor.

Plus the colours really don't go with my paint scheme

footey 19-02-2008 06:26 PM

cheers for tha answers

If you ask anyone, then they'll tell you. if they don't tell you then you've found somebody who belongs in TC, I reckon you tell them that too...

That's why i sprayed mine, not just so the car looked pretty, although others would question that:lol:

PaulRotheram 19-02-2008 07:09 PM

Abit hard to hide the set up.. basically everyone uses the same springs anyway! :woot:

100% correct, it has happened to me in touring cars as well, the driver in question actually dipped all his springs black to put everyone off also, that was super sad

Easiest way is to place over a gas ring on low setting and the plastic melts off.
To identify springs you can purchase coloured plastic sleeve from angling shops they use to identify Flys in Fyl Fishing.

Northy 19-02-2008 09:08 PM

I dye all my springs black.

You can then scratch the dye off the bottom of the spring to expose the paint.

these are top F1 GP secrets, :woot:

tony12795 20-02-2008 12:04 PM

Phil a quick question,

If let’s say your sponsor is Losi and you’re racing Losi cars and using Losi spare parts, are you aloud to remove the paint from none sponsored parts and put them on your cars. As your current sponsor’s don’t have the right part ??

_sleigh_ 20-02-2008 12:36 PM

It's not really a question of being allowed, it's more why should I promote someone else's product.

Plus in this instance the spring colours do NOT look cool with the wonderful TelShells paint scheme.

RogerM 20-02-2008 12:37 PM

I must admit that this whole think strikes me as a little odd. Surely manufacture sponsored drivers a duty to their sponsor to be totally transparent in what they are doing so that people are attracted to the car not put off by the "secrets"??

If you have to run a spring from another manufactures range to get the car to perform then that manufacture needs to sort things out and match the spring PDQ!

I personally have been put off cars in the past because of apparent secret set-ups and a team that, from the by stander's view, look to be very clandestine....

Just my 2ps worth.

_sleigh_ 20-02-2008 12:49 PM

To be completely honest, I don't really care about the do's/don'ts or rights/wrongs.

The simply question was how it's done. (thanks to those that gave useful answers )

How can it be so difficult for everybody else to simply answer the questions that are asked..

As for manufacturers not being able to get their cars performing right with all their own products. It almost certain that a fairly large percentage of drivers use shock oil / wheels etc that aren't made by the manufacturer of the car.

Why re-invent the wheel ?? (excuse the pun)

RogerM 20-02-2008 12:51 PM

Fairy snuff ...... but please share the info on parts with everybody ......

And thats you PRESUMING that he isn't... how about holding on to your presumptions? KJ

RLGfx 20-02-2008 02:35 PM

At a guess, it's Losi springs we're on about, as Phil will have loads of these and probably feels the car runs well with them. I'm sure any info will be passed back to the HB development team and advice will be taken on board, all part of R&D!

Anyway... to remove the paint you could probably use a harsh brake cleaner, or has been mentioned, Nitromors. Soak them in this and then pop a blob of coloured paint or nail varnish on the spring afterwards so you can tell what they are.

PS I'm running Losi springs on my RB5 and will be on my ZX5, because I've got them and they fit! Haven't got round to getting any Kyosho springs yet!

neiloliver 20-02-2008 02:45 PM

i was embarrassed using my Yokomo springs.. they were all day-glow

MRD 20-02-2008 04:51 PM
