Remember these tracks??
|
What's the surface in the top photo Tony? It looks amazing!!!

Neil D should know where that is!!!!! |
Same here, I love that stuff. If I can get a rostrum and a peice of grass sorted it's back to the 90's.
1990's Rudebits consisted of 4lb of grass and mud on the car on a wet winter day!! AMB was not even thought of, and numbers stuck back to back towards the top of your ariel was the way to go, with someone shouting the number out as the car went past to a guy who spent the day tapping in numbers on a keyboard, and Springer had a Guns and Roses style perm. Oh and lets not forget the makeshift rain covers for pitting, a couple of hatchbacks with a tarpaulin attached in the middle!! |
Temac is the dirt track. I loved it there. Traxxas went really well on that track.
|
Good times Mr E :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
Carrington Rec in Ash Vale unless I'm very mistaken. Jesus mate, the memories!. Please post more????? |

Grass is pukka but not good for repeat meetings. A one off yes.... which is why Tony had is huge trailer and Audi 100 CD!!!

Going slighty of topic I know, so all we need now is a large amount of grass! |
Nice one Tony, which is that Track in pics 2 & 3? I recognise it, is it Bury St Edmunds?

'Smoke House Inn' on the rostrum should be your big clue!!!
Grass = heaven Neil is right - we had a trailer that was the rostrum and on it all the track markings - we could of run a meeting anywhere at all.... There were the days of exciting racing for sure and I am sure a few memories for some of you. Nick - I have photos to make plenty blush - LOL |

and before the rostrum had a roof was a sad loss to the club |
Those pictures remind me off a very dry day at Cheshum, we started out on grass and and as the day went on we ended up on a dust track, i still have the 3rd in the final trophy in my loft. Those where the days where you changed the car as the track surface wore or in rained. There must be loads of tails in peoples minds.
jK |
TEMAC, and methinks those pics are from the 1993 Worlds. If you look very, very closely, you'll see me doing my Race Director's bit in the race control caravan!!
That was a great track, as was the tarmac track and oval behind it. Trashed by vandals and sadly didn't last long after that big event. All my off-road experience was on grass or dirt, with a very early showing of a bit of astro at the original EPO track in Kent. Best tracks in those days for me were Taunton and Southport, both a challenge. Those were my days! |
Yup, Nick and Chris are both right, Mildenhall track, operated by Bury Buggy club. Hated it when i first went there as was first time i'd raced on astro, however, wished it was still around a couple of years ago as it's only a bit over half hour away from me.

Would love to see some photos of that track if anyone had any! Think the guy who ran the club was Phil Mason..? Top bloke, very supportive of younger drivers |
are the bottom two pics of basildon worlds 1993 tony?
I think i still have a video and pics indoors of this race. Think i`ll have to dig them out. |
Tony, I'm working on an english translation of "The History of RC cars"... any images from Worlds or Euros would be highly appreaciated! Or fun stories!
Norwegian language original here: www.ymr.no/historie.htm Actually we are now in the process of making this a formal piece of the norwegian technical museum. Which will ensure that it is stored for all eternity  Btw Tony, did you ever hear from Craig Drescher as to what cars he won his Euros wins with? http://www.ymr.no/hf1_10or.htm |
I did a Radio Race Car race on the TEMAC Basildon worlds track shortly after the Worlds, Jimbo pearson turned up to race.
It was the first time we'd ever had to buy those silly BIBX tyres from Schumacher as they were the only thing that worked but even then only lasted about 1 run!!! |

I have pictures of Taunton from 93 as well when we travelled there from Dundee to do the BRCA round. Scotland only had grass tracks so it was summit special when we got to race on dirt tracks like TEMAC Taunton and Aire Valley. But it was the multi-surface like EPO, Bury, and Kidderminster that I loved back then. Not to mention the Juniors at somewhere near Luton on 1990 :) I still have the magazine cuttings from that as I made the A final  |
be good to see offical video of worlds, as i only went up for 4wd final day
was good to get close up to works yokomo cars, remember meeting cliff lett and brian kinwald and looking over there cars. |

My own interest in this event has been recently revived & heightened since restoring a Yokomo YZ10... its a 93 WCS which has evidence of being a pre-production model so its possible that my car may have been used by a team driver during the worlds event... but by whom i'm unsure/don't know! (Tony - this is the car that you blasted those magnesium parts for ) I'm just finishing off this project with a Masami style bodyshell as a tribute to the man who won the 4wd class. |
i remember those tracks from the top pics where the morning was spent cutting the grass and making a track, awesome times, not so good though were the bot dots lol
|
The pics of Basildon are at the 93 worlds and see if you notice whos car it is too!
I remember cutting thegrass the afternoon before and laying out the track - one of the racers went there one evening and changed 2 corners because he thought he wouldn't be able to race them right - Forgot to cut the grass though so it stood out like nothing else you've seen -so funny!! For those that mentioned Craig - see if you regognise these 2 cars?? http://www.rudebits.co.uk/images/myphotos/old1.jpg |

Ah a CAT 2000 ec and a Cougar 2000? Owned both of those back in the day
|
Ha, that shows how little i've actually raced. My second car after the obligatory tamiya 4wd (Manta Ray) was a second hand EC. From what i remember it was ace. I used to like my 410k (BANG) and the screw together heatsinks on the cat.
Good times! |
Got the Video from the Worlds 93 and 4 films worth of Pics. Was there the whole time and helped out all the place.
Got my pass signed by Masami and various other sigs in the back of one of my programmes. Attended a few things over the evenings there, George Land's BBQ was quite nice and the Awards Ceremony/Dinner was something rather special.   |
once you get yz10 done with masami shell you`ll have to post pics would like to see the end product. i still have my original 870c and used it last year to win a B final at a local meeting, still a great car. And haven`t run yet but still have CE RC10 from 1991 i think with black tub chassis.
