Hot Bodies - D2

The D2, Hot Bodies long awaited 2WD buggy has been rumoured for a while, and was finally shown today at the Nuremberg ToyFair. We managed to get some exclusive shots of the car:

http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/misc/news/d2oople02x.jpg

The Hot Bodies D2 features a 3mm alloy main chassis plate with plastic side pods screwed along its length, to add stiffness and a location for the electrics. The alloy extends to the front, forming the required 'kick up' - and all the way to the rear for the gearbox and suspension mounting.

The chassis is slotted for traditional cells and uses plastic trays to protect them. 7 slots mean more positions are available, combined with similar plastic trays to the D4 which allow fore/aft movement by turning them 180 degrees.

The car uses 2 piece front and rear shock towers - the same carbon fibre part on either side braced against the bulkhead and main chassis at the front, and a similar arrangement at the rear. You only have to replace half a shock tower!

The car in the photos sports D4 dampers but the final car will use the updated & simpler design of the D4 Worlds dampers.

HB have new metric front wheels - and accompanying wheels from the D4 at the rear using a large Hex just like the D4, so should be able to use Losi style wheels at the rear like the D4 can.

More shots of the D2 - lovely!

Alloy chassis - it's like a throw back to the 80's! Awesome work Adam.

franki 07-02-2008 11:46 AM

From the top it looks like a pro 3 :woot: he he another good looking car!!!!! how cool is our hobby at the mo

jimmy 07-02-2008 11:50 AM

I like those plain empty side pods - all looks really neato and uncomplicated.

ashleyb4 07-02-2008 11:57 AM

Defently diffrent should be interesting

Nick Goodall 07-02-2008 11:59 AM

We're getting back to the 90's with all these cars out now - How long has there been only 2 cars to choose from in 1/10th?? Great to see new cars coming out everywhere! It'll be like 1/8th before you know it

burgie 07-02-2008 12:04 PM

I don't know why, but despite all the obvious work that has gone into the car, and the refreshingly different approach to a 2wd chassis, there is just something that I don't like about that car......and i don't even know what i don't like about it!

:o

ashleyb4 07-02-2008 12:05 PM

Sorta looks like a b3

A

jimmy 07-02-2008 12:07 PM

Only if you are on crack does it look like a B3 - but fair enough! ;)

DCM 07-02-2008 12:12 PM

well, I got to hold up my hand, I was expecting a B4 clone, but wow, totally different, looks cool.... my wallet is looking at me nervous now!!

Kecky 07-02-2008 12:19 PM

That does look rather cool

xx4-nutter 07-02-2008 12:23 PM

them side pods are begging to be cut off and narrowd down !

Lee 07-02-2008 12:25 PM

That car is the SEX:thumbsup:

Lovin the alloy chassis its HOT:drool:

Kecky 07-02-2008 12:28 PM

I want one just to stick on my desk at work :woot:

To be fair i see where Ash is coming from, the shocks being on the front of the tower for one, and the shape of the chassis (with the plastic bits) is very B3 like.....

To be fair though it doesn't matter what it looks like in these pics as we can only really judge it once it's on track :)

markwilliamson2001 07-02-2008 01:14 PM

I am going to stand on people toes here, and say I DON'T like it....

To me, near the rear of the car, above the battery tray, there is the rear bulkhead brace/mount. This is going to make getting lipo stick packs in much harder, than if it was not there. I also don't like the 3 piece chassis. Yokomo did this recently on their bx 4wd, and nearly everyone said they preferred the upgraded 1 piece chassis. I also don't like the front shocks being on the front of the a-arms, they seem a little exposed to me. The big holes in the chassis are also going to be a big "catch" area for dirt to collect....

otherwise it still looks like any 2wd buggy of late (except the S2 and X6) - i.e. batteries in middle, motor at back, servo at front etc etc.

Sorry folks!

Mark

jimmy 07-02-2008 01:30 PM

They are photos so it remains to be see how easy a lipo will fit - you can't judge it until we know exactly what the situ is.

Not sure what you mean about the chassis? Yokomo actually went to a 1 piece chassis. The B4 has a 2 piece chassis as do the other popular cars. This has a 1 piece chassis, with side pods for the electrics. So unless I missed something this is closer to your 'ideal' than any other competitive 2WD around?.
;)

bigred5765 07-02-2008 01:31 PM

knowing adam im sure he has thought about feature proofing ie lipo's
and down grading stick packs

thats how its been for the past 30 odd years so why change something that cleary works better then anything else ...

personally i think the car looks very good.

low13 07-02-2008 01:35 PM

looks sweet any idea on price.maybe the alloy chassis means that there won't be need for a lipo weight.does look very bling.loving the shocks.tis theSEXX

After learning the chassis was 3mm, maybe the side pods don't do quite that much for strength? certainly not as much as the B4 etc do on those cars. just guessing here of course but I'd imagine the weight would be more central and lower down - wether it's heavier or not I'm not sure.

Southwell 07-02-2008 01:46 PM

I like the idea of the cells being lower, reminds me of what everyone did with the b3's back in the day! It certainly looks pretty good, it's almost certain to be a strong alternative to the b4.

Looks like you donīt even have to and can just unscrew them, as Jimmy stated and what can be seen on the pics. It would be even way narrower than the 2WD Durango (Prototype). This X-brace at the rear seems to be just fine to mount your electrics upon in that case. Or behind. And then it would be be a one piece chassis par excellence.

Together with the slotted cell tray the CG would be veery low and centralised, could be a rocket on tight high grip tracks.

Slim + fast, would have to be called Slim-Fast then... :)

DCM 07-02-2008 01:50 PM

on the B3, they didn't ower the cells, they raised the sides, or better clearance, like how they do the fairings on a sports bike.

I am guessing the alloy chassis will bring the weight low, and but the structural rigidity and the pods, more like dirt shields.

nobby 07-02-2008 01:51 PM

it's got nothing to do with how the car looks in pics.
its all down to inprooving on whats out there now.

as for the chassis its along the same lines as all8th scale buggys and they seem to work.

lets see what it performs like on the track (lets hope its soon)

Eh? The chassis was cut out so the cells could fit lower....

DaveG28 07-02-2008 01:54 PM

Anyone know a likely price??

no, on the B3, the cells sat in a channel, so that gave stiffness, they then raised the sides to give clearance for better lean angles

I think Ian's talking about a Mod a lot of us did which was to cut slots out of the bottom of the chassis so that the Cells would sit lower - i've still got one at home with this done!

Big holes in the chassis are where your batteries go........

Chris Doughty 07-02-2008 02:09 PM

What Ian means is that everyone took their stock B3 (we also did this to the XXX) and cut slots in the chassis tray so that the cells sat lower.

ah right, I know peeps did that to the Losi cars too, didn't no people abused AE cars the same lol...

jimmy 07-02-2008 02:11 PM

I had this on my XXX - I think I might have got the chassis off Adam actually - the car was awesome with it on. I only ran it once since I got the B4 the week after.
