Brushless Power for the Durga! Help needed
Hi all,
I'm running the Durga with a brushed (13T) motor. However the motor doesn't deliver enough torque. Instead of spending money on a new brushed motor I think it's more usefull to switch to Brushless instead. I've read a lot of good things about Castle Creations Mambas and they are well priced too. I think the 5700kv version delivers enough torque and speed for me, maybe it's even too fast but then I'll limit it. I'll run it with a 6cell NIMH battery in the beginning, maybe I'll switch to lippos but that could take a while as I have to watch my budget.... Castle Creations has two different ESC's, the MambaMax and the Sidewinder. I hear good things about both and the Sidewinder is a bit cheaper. Which of these to ESC would you recommend or would maybe recommend another motor/brand? Please give me your opinion, thanks in advance! |
I'm running with a Maxx 6900.
Very fast with pretty good run times. Very configurable in the software. Using basic ansmann 3700 stick packs at the mo. Will move to lipo soon though Have you got a slipper? If you are moving to brushless I would say thats a must. If I'm not mistaken, the maxx can handle more power than the sidewinder? |

I think so. Certainly works the slipper hard from standing even though I have it set quite tight. Does suffer a bit from cogging. Though this seems worse on one of my packs so not sure if it's just naff batteries causing it. Certainly doesn't do it on my 11v lipo from my heli!!

I'll be putting the Mamba Max in the Durga for the next time I race - maybe the Batley Super cup, not sure. I have the 5700 motor - not really sure what gearing to go for but I'll let you know what I come up with

After watching a lot of Mamba 5700 movies yesterday I'm thinking I'll go for the 5700 with a Mamba Max esc (as the pc interface stuff is included there)... |
The Mamba Max esc fits on the Durga?
|
Just like to point out that the mamba isnt BRCA legal :) its a very good system and is very quick and adjustable though, what ever you go for you wont be dissapointed.
|
I've ran the 5.5 Vortex Orion and Lrp combo w/no problems (16/91)
|
Mamba ESC fits easy peasy!
|
the Mamba speedo IS legal, the motors aren't
I just started running the R1 and Redline 632 motor (6 turn 3.2Kv) and it goes well, the motor is designed with lots of torque, so I just keep gearing up. |
Allright thanks guys!
I won't run any races with it as there is no track in the near. And if I run on a track it would just be running for 'fun' not a real race. So the thing doesn't have to be race legal.. Would the 23T pinion and stock spur do allright? Also would other spurs (from other manufacturies) fit the Durga? |
Why aren't the motors legal?
Any suggestions for a legal alternative to go with the mamba esc? Or was that the R1 and redline motors you mentioned DCM? |
The mambamax combo is ordered! In the end I went for the 6900kv. It is probably to fast for me in the beginning', so i'll limit it using the software.
I thought the 6900 is more "futureproof" then the 5700 for me and as I won't run it with 3S lipos (which is the only avantage from the 5700 over the 6900) the 6900 was better overal. |
After spending a week at Customs my Mamba brushless combo is on his way to me ! I hope to receive it tomorrow :D
I have a question though: I'm thinking of running it with the stock spur and 19T pinion. Would that be sufficient? The 19T should keep the motor and esc cool is that correct? |

I just received the Mamba Combo , had to pay 43 euros for tax and customs though ..
I'll fit the snake this weekend and I'll keep you guys posted |
let us know what you think. I know I'm pleased with mine;)
|
Ye, id love to know how it goes in a 4wd, you will be amazed at the amount of torque you get out of the rev range if you compared it to another similar sensored combo, there great for stuff like that :woot::thumbsup:

Mamba Max on the Durga
Hi guys!
I tried the mamba 7700 on my Durga and the Speed control blow off... now Im running a mamba max with the 6900 motor and the velocity is absurd... I had to limit velocity in my radio to a 80% to make the buggy more driveable. with the 6900 the 17T pinion goes very well. I like to see the face in the Nitro guys when the Durga surpass 1/8 buggies...jeje its awsome! |
@psuar
Thanks for the advice! What kind of batteries are you using on the Mamba? A friend of mine has a 7700kv in his Durga. He wanted a high top speed and fitted a 25T pinion in it. He already cooked his brand new Intellect battery! I was planning to use the 17T on the Durga and limit it by dropping the timing a bit. I use 6 cell NIMH batteries (Intellect 3800 and VapexTech 4300) |
Hi Vin
the problem is the mamba 7700 is a 1000 watts motor... so it will cook your bateries without proper gearing. for the 7700 I used a 15T pinion, but the bateries were always too hot and in one race the SC stoped and never resurrect again... now Im using the 6900 wich is milder and with 17T pinion, bateries and SC were warm...with excellent top speed and torque. I usually ran with GP3300 or Intellect 4200 |

How did you set up the ESC (like with punch, timing etc) I just fitted the Mamba Combo to the Durga, gonna run it tomorrow. I only did a small test run yet, what a power!! |
I'm thinkinf of buying a Durga together with MambaMax ESC, 5700KV Mamba motor and a 3s Lipo. Yes it will be fast, realy fast. My DX7 TX will do much of the limiting using a mixer. Switching the mixer on or off will enable/disable the limiter during runtime. Nice for the straights ;)
I'm looking at the following Lipo's: Hyperion CX - 3S 5350mAh, 85.6A Continuous (16-25C) Weight: 350gr, Size: 29 x 44 x 138 mm Hyperion CX - 3S 4250mAh, 76.5A Continuous (18-27C) Weight: 293gr, Size: 22.9 x 44 x 148 mm I'm unsure if they will fitt inside the Durga. Can anyone measure that up for me? Thanks for the help. Pattux |
Dude you don't have to post your question in multiple topics.
I gave you the measurements already on Modelbouwforum.nl . 2S will fit, 3S probably too and if not you have to modify (dremel) the chassis a bit. Good luck! |
I can't dremel too much away. The mounting posts for the battery will probably be in the way.

Hi there,
I have the durga DB01 and recently I installed the Mamba Max 7900. I am running with orion 3300 Ni/Mh battery, 91T spur and 17T I installed it with the quick set up as instructions, fine so far. It worked fine but just for a while becauase my front and rear diferential (where the belt goes) Mashed!! Now I know that Slipper Clutch is a must in order to handle such power. Will I need anything extra apart from the slipper, in order to enjoy my super fast Durga?? Thanks for your help |
Hi,
I would advice you to rebuild the diff with the TRF metallic part (Diff Joint Item #51286). After a big crash, I decided to check everything and discovered that the rear diff was showing signs of running quite hot (thanks to the Storm Evo 5.5)... It did not melted completely, as reported by some in the forum, but the pulley had slightly "melted" around the diff balls (ceramic one from Kanzen) and I noticed that the metallic plates were again moving freely (tried all the glue available on the market with no result). Since the rebuilt, diff running smoothly and since it seems the TRF diff joint is longer than the Durga original part, the CVDs are well in place. Cheers |

Durga and Mamba Max 7900 problem
Hi,
I am running Durga With Mamba max 7900, 17T pinion, 91 Spur gear. I did the quick set up. It worked fine but just for a while. The Ball differential mashed, front and back. I will put the slipper clutch for sure. Should I put anything else in order to avoid internal damages? Please post you help.. |
