Hey

maybe its not the right place to be posting this but im about to move to blackburn and am thinking about coming to some of your races and probably joining the club :)

i used to be into RC a few years ago but have not really been doing anything lately as ive been at university, i do still own a hpi mt2 though :)

i have noticed that you tend to race mainly 2wd buggies which i love so thats why i picked you, can anybody tell me a good starter? i dont want to come to one of your meetings/races with a rubbish buggy :)

Thanks Ian

get yourself a team associated b4 brushless rtr and come and have some fun

coleman758 21-07-2011 05:58 PM

Hey Dude!

We race a good mix of 2WD & 4WD. Most of the newer guys seem to run something like the Ansmann Mad Rat or the Mad Monkey.

In my opinion best starting point is a B4. Its what i started with, They are a very good reliable car. there is a few guys running them at the club.
so there is plenty advice and spares for WHEN you break something haha!

The B4.1 RTR looks ok, and would be ideal as a starting kit. What do you have in the way of electrics?

(damn martin beat me too it!)

captainlip 21-07-2011 05:58 PM

Pop up Sunday and look for a White fto, I'll advise you either 2 or 4wd electric buggies, for 2wd your looking at a b4, losi 22 or cougars as for 4wd look at b44, durangos or bmax

Defo join the club as it's probably one of the best astro tracks in the country, like I said pop up see what it's all about, introduce yourself and you will get a feel for how a club meet runs

Ian_lawton 21-07-2011 06:09 PM

looking at getting a 2wd electric, think ive fallen for the CF schumacher couger! i know if i bought the one without the CF id always want to be buying the CF bits,

as for electrics, i have no spares and the transmitter for the nitro one is broke so looking at getting new/second hand everything :(

Im working this sunday so i wont be able to come this week but i think this is my last week :)

Cougars are real nice bit of kit depends how much experience you have tho b4s are alot easier to dial in

Ian_lawton 21-07-2011 06:48 PM

what motors are the most used at the club and races? brushed or non?

tisher 21-07-2011 06:50 PM

if your going to run 2wd you will need something like a 7.5t brushless and lipo set up

Si Coe 21-07-2011 06:56 PM

I wouldn't start with a 7.5t myself. With some experience its great but I'd start milder - something like a 10.5t or even 13.5t. Its not like my cars run slow with them, but the power is more manageable. Cheaper too.
But certainly brushless, and I'd recommend sensored over sensorless, especially in a 2wd.

And the best cars in 2wd at Bury are old RC10's. Any model you like as long as it predates the B4.....

Ian_lawton 21-07-2011 07:35 PM

I would go for something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Team-Assoc...item230e90c79a

captainlip 21-07-2011 08:09 PM

2wd is great start until you get the 4wd bug

Fast Eddie 21-07-2011 08:17 PM

I was in the same boat a couple of months ago and have now ended up with a B4, lipo, 9.5 brushless and a PT

The PT takes all the stress out of prep and getting out to marshall:thumbsup:

Other cars murder mine on the straight but I can almost handle it on the inner section :)

When I get more confident I will speed it up, sensored is much easier to handle too:)

Because I was running in trucks. Which I won. With an ancient RC10T.

Thats your esc not your motor. Watch one of mine on the straight - quick as anyone elses, but much tamer round the infield, and all running a 10.5t. The trick is a timing advance esc - gives me a boost on the straights but a mild motor everywhere else.

Its a cc mamba max pro and I have the cables etc to set it up but it doesnt agree with my pc.

Also I am well under geared at the moment as my skill level cant handle too much top end:thumbsup:

:woot:I dont think so budy you where beat by a six year old with a ultima sc I have the final sheet vaughn won the truck final:phis first final win you came of with a Broke truck after a couple of laps buy somthing a bit newer there more reliable;)maybe a B4:lol:

Si Coe 21-07-2011 10:55 PM

Had a B4, hated it. Quick, but soulless. Not fun to drive in the same way the Team car is. Sold it to StampedeVXLboy for those older ooplers!
So far no mechanical faults on the team car. Few problems with the rear suspension on the truck like that which caused the DNF, but I've replaced the shonky 'upgrade' suspension arms with original ones and it seems to be sorted.

Put it this way - my Bmax is working really well, but I haven't raced it in weeks. The RC10 is just more fun.

si doesent get on with b4s and to be fair ive driven his rc10 and it feels realy good.

Si Coe 21-07-2011 11:01 PM

Also you weren't running 2wd the week before when the final consisted of a B4, B3, B2 and my team car, all lined up in age order, oldest first, plus a Mad Monkey at the rear.
The win went to the B2 cos I drive really badly in the final.

I never mentioned that Si car is not any good the OP wanted a opinion on what first 2wd to get the B4 was just my suggestion. But there is no point claiming you won a final when he clearly did not:p

Ian_lawton 22-07-2011 10:46 AM

that b4 trt seems like a steal to be honest looked at escs and brushless moters and id say a decent setup would cost around 150quid by itself

Its a good starting point buddy.

Then you can get better electrics as you go. Get it bit by bit.

captainlip 22-07-2011 11:27 AM

I started out with the b4.1 rtr and it wasn't long before I upgraded the electrics as I found it majorly slow!! Can fault the radio gear though never had a single glitch!

Problem with the .1 b4 is that all the plastic contains carbon to "strengthen" it! All it does is make it more brittle so things like rear shock towers and front wishbones were snapping all day long. Alot of the .1 owners were sticking the older b4 bits on as they are more flexible!

That said it's a bargain to get out racing with and would suggest buying a few spares along with it

Plus dark blue front springs silver rears, some weight over the front end

captainlip 22-07-2011 11:29 AM

Also I think it can be had for under £200

Ian_lawton 22-07-2011 11:43 AM

under £200quids? sounds good to me :)

Si Coe 22-07-2011 04:08 PM

We've got B4.1 RTR's running at Bury in stock form and they really don't look slow, but even if it isn't as quick as you'd like from the box the esc is capable of handling up to 6000kV which is more motor than you'd want in a 2wd anyway. It is sensorless, so you'll find it less smooth on slow corners, but our outdoors track doesn't have a lot of them!
There really was no need to Captain Lip to replace every part of his RTR - it was perfectly decent as stock.

losichris 22-07-2011 04:31 PM

whats the deal with these Lipo batteries, how do they work and how long do they last. I dont drive so fancy getting one/ or how ever many it takes to last all day, any suggestions?

Si Coe 22-07-2011 04:34 PM

You definately want lipos. How long a pack lasts does depend on the car, gearing, how you drive etc, and also on how many rounds of qualifying we get in a day.
In theory 2 packs of around 5000mAh ought be be plenty for a 2wd with a sensible motor.

losichris 22-07-2011 04:37 PM

ok great, x-6 with a 6.5 , and an aggressive driver

You'll only need 1 pack then. You'll spend more time broken than driving!

losichris 22-07-2011 06:04 PM

haha yeah, then another 3 years break from racing :D

Ian_lawton 04-08-2011 02:47 PM

just another quick question.. what Turn brushless motors are people using at bury? my dad has got me the schumacher couger as a graduation present so thats the chassis ill be running with. also the radio gear ill be getting for now is the ainsman 2.4ghz one thats on offer at JE spares atm just need to make a decision on ESC and motor looked at this Orca Q Spark Brushless Combo?

captainlip 04-08-2011 02:51 PM

For a beginner I'd be looking at a 10.5t and when you finally stop breaking stuff and crashing move upto a 7.5t
