2009 off road Worlds

Long way off, but did someone already mention this? apparently the next 10th off road Worlds is back in South Africa. Is this the same venue as 2001/2?

IFMAR World Championships El Off Road 2 & 4 WD
FAMAR Bloc - Location: Pretoria, South Africa

o dear.......

super__dan 18-01-2008 03:10 PM

Does anyone actually race in SA? I mean you get people on the forums from Australia etc but not once have I seen anyone from SA.

RogerM 18-01-2008 03:14 PM

I see quite a South African's on the forums ..... however few of them actually still live there.

Might be an interesting one for me though as I could combine it with a trip to see my girlfriends family (on paper ..... actually spend the whole time watching RC..)

jimmy 18-01-2008 03:17 PM

There was one dedicated racer from SA in Japan, and there are at least a couple on this forum. The chap from SA in Japan said that there is racing over there - but i guess it's quite insular since you never really hear much about it???

I have heard a lot of stories about the 2001/2 Worlds down there which didn't sound particularly good - nothing to do with the track or racing of course.

Chris Doughty 18-01-2008 03:22 PM

I think RC racing at world champs level is getting to be a battle of survival or welth depending on where you go.

David Church 18-01-2008 03:29 PM

Where did you hear this Jimmy???
I heard they were in Texas?????
It was Jaco in Japan, very cool dude, he did say he reads this forum, as do alot of other guys from there!!!!
On a positive note, I may get to go again if there is not a full UK team, but I do have a plan to gain entry if the Uk team is full....
Mwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa:D
Top secret though lol.

David Church 18-01-2008 03:30 PM

Doh, just saw the banner at the bottom of your post!!!!! hahahahhahaha

telboy 18-01-2008 08:30 PM

You don't sound too pleased pidge.

25pie 18-01-2008 11:14 PM

1/10 champ

how do you get into the UK team, ie how many national titles or whatever do you need?

werner1619 18-01-2008 11:31 PM

I am from SA and have also heard 2009 will be here.
Will be building a New track for the event.

Rc racing in SA is not to big deal, more people in onroad than off road. You won't hear allot about SA racing as there is no Manufacturer in SA. The Manufacturers fuel the hobby, as I am sure all of you know....

The largest Distributer in SA passed me the info that 2009 Champs will be in SA. will keep you posted, maybe even post some new track pictures.... or is that unfair...?

jimmy 19-01-2008 12:01 AM

It's only unfair if you DON'T get the photos for us! :p

Lee 19-01-2008 03:12 PM

I heard that approximatley the top 30 people from the nationals get an invite?

Im not sure if this is 100% correct, but i imagine there will be spaces for SA.

Sounds like a good trip, the women are hot there as well pidge;)

barnyard 19-01-2008 06:15 PM

the allocation is first divided into the main blocks - roar(americas), efra (europe), far east inc oz (cant remember name) & think there's a rest of world.

based on each block geting 50 ish drivers allowed these are then divided amongst the member countries.

i believe for the 1/8th worlds in the usa only the top 3 from each efra country were guaranteed a place any places not taken up by member countries are then shared around the block untill all places are taken.

if a block doesn't use its quota these places are then offered to other blocks

werner1619 20-01-2008 07:20 PM

will post some info as soon as I have any....

Jimbo 24-01-2008 12:46 AM

Hi Werner1619,
Please be sure to let us know as soon as you know which city in SA it is going to be in! Fingers crossed it's near Durban.

Thanks!

jimmy 05-02-2009 02:11 PM

Come on then guys - who's going to this one? I've yet to speak to anyone who knows for sure they'll be attending. :o

James 05-02-2009 02:19 PM

I told PW that i was interested in going, i've been before, a friend of mine sold up his farm in the UK and bought a mammoth place out there, his neighbours are Zulus! lands dirt cheap..
The areas you arrive in, travel though and to for the track are dodgy though and i think its a malaria area too..
But apart form that im sure its ACE :bored:

millzy 05-02-2009 02:20 PM

so no taking the family then

Lee 05-02-2009 02:28 PM

I could be tempted, not heard anything about it though apart from on this thread.

jimmy 05-02-2009 02:34 PM

There's a south african girl at work, was gonna ask her if she thought it was a good idea to go but she's off sick at the mo'. hmmmm. I fancy going to the Worlds again but the good thing about Japan was how safe it was and how you could go out and have fun at night - SA doesn't look like it's quite the same.

jimmy 05-02-2009 02:38 PM

There's a maccies not too far away (to the left, lol)
Yeah there's been sod all information around - looking on the official SA racing site they talk about meeting up in Nuremberg with IFMAR reps, which happens to be on at the moment I think??
Sadly you aren't allowed to join their forum unless you are south african - how mean.

millzy 05-02-2009 02:42 PM

i wouldnt mind going

jimmy 05-02-2009 02:47 PM

Large meals at Maccies are ~£2.40 - bargain, that's almost sold it to me right there. If I could get enough sponsorship to go, I'd be up for it maybe.

David Church 05-02-2009 05:13 PM

I was thinking about going as well, but if there are low numbers, of top drivers, I don't think it will be worth it.
The warm up race is not too far off so it wil be interesting to see how many people go to that.

jimmy 05-02-2009 05:21 PM

Billy Easton was about the only non-Japanese driver at the last Worlds Warmup so I'd not expect that many.
Yeah I'm with you there Dave - even if it's the worlds, if there's not actually that many great drivers there then it might not be worth while. Worth keeping an eye on - if we go then I'd want to travel with a couple more people just to be on the safe side (preferably Wraggy!)

If there are low numbers of top drivers though.. MCDC could be the next WC!

jimmy 05-02-2009 05:36 PM

I might have something to say about that - I'm an F2 you know now Vicky. That's like one step down from being National Champion.

David Church 05-02-2009 06:05 PM

There's one way to sort this out!!!!!!!!!!!!

FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Just kidding:p:D

jimmy 06-02-2009 12:15 PM

I just asked the girl at work who's from SA and apparently she's from Pretoria. She said her mum and her dad have both been car jacked seperately before and I think her brother or someone also. She said as long as you don't go out at night and keep your eyes open you'll be OK. :bored:

I really want to go but it doesn't sound like the safest place around it has to be said.

David Church 06-02-2009 12:18 PM

Don't go out at night!!!! AARRGGHHHHHHH:cry:
Couldn't imagine Japan without the nightlife!!!! LOL

jimmy 06-02-2009 12:23 PM

haha, exactly. The social side of it is half (or more) of the fun.
As well as getting some funding together - I think I'd need to know I'd be in a safe hotel in a safe area.

Kopite 06-02-2009 12:55 PM

i used to live in Pretoria, and my auntie & uncle live in Joburg

it's not the safest place in the world, i'll say that much :wtf:

jimmy 03-03-2009 04:11 PM

There's now a website for the worlds setup - but it has absolutely no information what so ever....

Please forward all sponsorship offers to me - so we can do a nice report on this race

mole2k 03-03-2009 04:20 PM

I'll post you over a rich tea biscuit if it'll help Jimmy.

jimmy 03-03-2009 04:26 PM

YUM! - can you send one for my kidnappers also?:lol:;)

yeah, OK....I'll sponsor you 1p a lap of the worlds track!

Alfonzo 03-03-2009 04:40 PM

As a Brit who has a lot of SA family and have spent a lot of time out there I can tell you it's a fantastic country. Yes, you do need to be aware of crime in certain areas, but it's not a friggin war zone! It's beautiful and the people are great, the food is great, the beer is great. I'm sure the locals would look after you all, they're good like that. Footie World Cup out there next year too.

Although you wouldn't wisely wonder down town in the big cities late at night after a skinfull, TBH there are certain areas in this country which are pretty dodgy too nowadays.

Those that go will love it.

David Church 03-03-2009 05:09 PM

I want to go but don't know if I will.....But if Jimmy does a Worlds report before the 2008 EPR National there will be trouble!!!!;):p:thumbsup::thumbdown::p

Eh J man??????????????????? Hahahahahahahahah

Aw come on man!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give us our report please:eh?:
