Other brands of 28t idler gear to fit rat/monkey

Been racing the Monkey on high grip astro with lots of jumps and its killing the idler gears.

What other brands are compatible and of a stronger material that can drop straight in the gearbox. I already have the hpi firestorm metal idler gears but they just eat the diff gear as they are narrower. I have set the slipper as loose as possible without the nut coming of the spur shaft.

Its not so much the money but more of a right pain in the arse to disassemble the diff case all the time.

Is there a 52t metal diff gear that can fit in there?

Try a Kyosho SP Idler £8 or the Acetel (I think thats what it's called) Idler made by Team Extreme £5.

HTH's Simon

Also the losi xxx idler will fit with a slight bit of reaming to fit the bearing.

I agree with above, was told by a team driver that I would need to replace the 1st plastic idler from layshaft with the ally one asap as it will stip...he was not wrong, it soon let go:lol:. also the new nylon one's should be out very soon, so my plan is layshaft, then ally, then nylon to diff:thumbsup:.
I have also ordered one of the new composite diff gear from TCmodels

The idlers are a very week part of the kit, but for 65quid you can't realy grumble, there is a 2wd mid car that I hold a special hatered for, costs about 4x the price, and still has a crap gearbox

Ps Ansmann say the ally gears will be back in stock very soon:eh?:

Great.

Do you know when they are going to be available and who will stock them?

I see the AE ones are 28t and the diff is 52t. Do they fit, not sure if the bearings are metric size on the b4:confused:

Well ansmann told my local hobby shop they should have the idlers in stock any day...that could mean tmro, could be next month, never sure when they say that:confused:. you can order them from any shop the sells ansmann, thats just about any model shop

not sure if the AE diff would fit, the bearing will not for sure, as the monkey is metric and the AE in imperial, I think the drive cup diamiter may be the same, but the outer diamiter is a bit bigger with the AE bearings, but tbh the diff seems quite good on the monkey, I am running diffrent balls but with the original plates etc and the diff has stayed very smooth after about 4-5 runs

I am only trying the composite one as it is prity cheep and I just wanted to se what it is like;)

notme 04-07-2011 12:55 AM

I have only stripped 1 stock idler gear in 1 season between 2 cars (truck+2wd buggy)I only put in the losi one as I had one on hand, and it happen to run quieter.
The associated diff may fit, it uses 10x16 outdrive bearings, the ansmann 10x15.
I dont know if the rest of the dimensions allow it to run properly inside the dif case.

This new part will solve your problems.

If you're really impatient visit tcmodels.net for this part plus some other new stuff like kevlar diff gear and front chassis plate.

This company (Team C/Ansmann) is doing some awesome upgrades atm it seems like they want to produce awesome race cars not just entry level stuff.

adamjimny 04-07-2011 06:10 AM

just order the alloy ones from tcmodels because they are brilliant and no reliability issues at all but make a big order so its worth while.

saying that Ive been running 10t brushless since January and no wear on gears at all and couldn't see why there would as its what the slipper is designed to protect

I do to however LHS dont really seem to believe in the brand as much as AE/Losi so they'll miss out on the sales until they wise up a little.

fastinfastout 06-07-2011 02:47 AM

so which idler should I get, nylon or aluminum?

I would imagine the aluminum would wear the diff gear quicker....?

jpmatrix 06-07-2011 09:32 AM

Team c goodies

Holy crap:o

Received goods just now 48hrs later. Didnt expect it to be that quick.

Now to install..

Nylon. better wear, lighter and quieter.

Nathanio 21-07-2011 06:01 PM

I have ordered one each of the metal and nylon idlers from TC Models and fitted one of each to the MM today. I have given it a test run in the pouring rain and its now super smooth :) I wish I had ordered a spare metal one though.

mattybucks 21-07-2011 06:12 PM

Try some different slipper pads, maybe AE?

sideshowbob 26-08-2011 06:27 PM

idler gear grief ? what grease ?!

whats your opinion on correct grease to use ? aluminium requires grease yet nylon doesnt so how do we grease a mixed box of materials?

deano261 26-08-2011 08:14 PM

do i need to get a different set of bearings than my ones that i put in for the ally one as i have already upgraded all the bearings.

luniemiester 26-08-2011 09:34 PM

I have used the same bearings. Currently running one alloy and one White gear in my Mid motor car with no grease. I stripped and rebuilt my diff this week and couldn't see any wear on the gears dispite no lubrication grease ( there was grease residue from the bearings inside the cases though). This is with a 5.5t motor

Which way round are you running? Lay shaft gear -alloy gear - nylon then diff? Or layshaft gear - nylon gear - alloy gear - diff?

Which alloy gear are you running?

luniemiester 26-08-2011 10:23 PM

Layshaft, alloy, nylon, diff. The gears are the ones from tcmodels. I did buy two of each as was going to run two alloy or two nylon to see what they were like

Have raced about 4 hours at cov with this setup and had no issues so far
