Which Pinions

What make of pinions do people use and why.

Are there benefits to using ally over steel (weight obviously, what about noise and wear???)

RogerM 26-12-2007 09:46 PM

I use the one DC Racing have in stock at the time I order them ... LOL

Ali pinions are great in the short term however they do tend to wear quickly. Steel last longer but heavier.

With modern motors I belive that the difference between an ali and steel pinion is not an issue, sure somebody will disagree though!

ianplimmer 26-12-2007 11:19 PM

having a heavier pinion is better than no pinion at all :D:D:D

josh_smaxx 26-12-2007 11:21 PM

I once got a titanium one when thats all the shop had in, same price as normal ones aswell.

ben 26-12-2007 11:22 PM

And what did it wear like is it noisy is it light heavy?

lil ben

GRIFF55 26-12-2007 11:24 PM

I use the tamiya ones that come in pairs. Very good quality and nice and quiet too!!!

telboy 26-12-2007 11:30 PM

i've found that the tamiya corse pitch ones wear badly. But the fine pitch one are fine.

Edit are making some EXTREMELY light weight ones, they're highly recomended, not sure on availability yet though. Sure Adam can hrow some light on that side of things. ;)

I like the RW Racing pinions and have used them for years, have even got some SRM Racing gears which was their previous name.

ashleyb4 26-12-2007 11:39 PM

I use rw racing ones

PaulRotheram 27-12-2007 12:49 AM

I think i use the Rw ones also.. to be fair, I bought pinions when I started.. and i'm still using the same ones now, that's a good near 8 years now.. and i've never found a need to renew them.

sosidge 27-12-2007 10:50 AM

My RW ones have proven very hard wearing, I had them 20-odd years ago (think they were under a different name then, SRM or something?) and also currently.

The quietest pinions I have are the Kawada ones.

The only ones I would not recommend are the plastic pinions made by one of the american manufacturers, they wear like crazy and have an oversized boss too.

super__dan 27-12-2007 12:03 PM

I use RW too from Castle models. When I got my brushless and knew I was never going to use anything over a 23 again I bought all new from 15 to 23 even though I had them all already, I really felt I was splashing out too :)

But I've lost one by lending it to someone and them not giving it back, anyone going to own up?

xx4-nutter 27-12-2007 12:24 PM

i use them too the ones from peter. they sell them at our local model shop too

Chrislong 27-12-2007 04:04 PM

I want to replace all mine. I currently have a variety of brands, some of which have mullered grub screws, some of which won't interchange grub screws, and so on.. I had a pinion fall off for the first time in years last weekend.

I am interested in the Edit brand, wonder if Adam can throw some light on it for us? I get the impression that there stuff is made to the highest quality.

Pinions

Chris.
Adam [ and few others drivers] as been using the Edit brand for a few meetings and so far we have had no wear problems. I like the through mounting which means that if the thread wears in the Pinion you can mount with the screw in the other side. I beleave they will be available in the New Year. They will be in use at Worksop on the 6th.
Lindsay. :):)

niggs98 27-12-2007 06:07 PM

i have run the rw pinions for years and like others still have some srm ones as well :O. althought the idea of the edit ones being able to use the other side when they finally strip out will have me trying them ;)

telboy 28-12-2007 08:16 PM

Yup, me too.;)

bigred5765 28-12-2007 09:34 PM

These should be out in the next month or so....

They've been designed with the following in mind:
Minimum Noise
Minimum Mass
Minimum Wear
Maximum contact area.
Minimum Cost!!!!

Jimmy has pictures of these pinions.

They are about 65-70% lighter than a standard pinion..

To give you an idea the 19T is 1.2g!!:D

ashleyb4 02-01-2008 01:22 PM

That sounds intersting so what material are they made of how have you reduced the weight are they as strong as a normal pionoin???? Come on jimmy get them pics up.

Northy 02-01-2008 01:25 PM

G

Sure!!! :D

Material = Unobtanium

Part Numbers : ED200XX0

Substitue XX with the number of teeth you require.

Yes, they do have 2 grub screw holes... The weight of a hole is closer to the weight of a grub screw in a hole than the solid material... Better balance.

mattym0310 02-01-2008 01:59 PM

those edit pinions sound awesome, any idea on cost?

ben 02-01-2008 02:01 PM

Unobtainium is a humorous colloquialism that refers to any extremely rare, costly, or physically impossible material needed to fulfill a given design for a given application. The name is not a portmanteau but it is derived from unobtainable + ium (the suffix for a number of elements). Variations include unobtanium and unattainium, with the same meaning.
The properties of any particular "unobtainium" depend on the intended use. For example, a pulley made of unobtainium might be massless and frictionless. However, if used in a nuclear rocket, unobtainium would be light, strong at high temperatures, and resistant to radiation damage.

Must be good stuff then :D

mattym0310 02-01-2008 05:12 PM

wtf? :eh?: [just about somes that one up i think :D lol]

ben 02-01-2008 06:13 PM

mattym0310 02-01-2008 06:16 PM
