Airbrush & paint
I fancy buying an airbrush to have a go at doing some shells, any recommendations?
Also, where's the best place to get the Fastkolour paint from? Cheers G |
The best place to get faskolor is calling it Createx and buying it from the USA.. I have seen it for $2 in the USA, that is what, about 1.20 sterling ?
Createx is the proper stuff, I think Faskolor is just rebranded from createx. I think DCM has some links to createx paints over here, still cheaper than the faskolor stuff. |
Hi, yes Createx is the same stuff, and Createx has a lot more colours, plus other things like colour lightenners, viscosity prolongers, so it don't dry so quick (like you need it with a rush job...) but Faskolor has some nicer colours.
For a cheap airbrush and createx paint try HERE |

Do a google search for 'Tamiya Spraywork' it's an airbrush and compressor made by tamiya. It runs from a 7.2 volt battery and works a treat. I've had one since the 80's and it still works. The new one looks really nice, although I believe you'll have to buy it from overseas. Still it's very well priced for what you get and you don't need a separate compressor. Found it here : http://tamiya.com/english/products/7...basic_comp.htm mmmm, nice. |
they are great for using lacquer based paint but would be underpowered for Createx/Faskolor....
And 2 hours doing drop shadows on four wings, three shells and one undertray gives you cramp BIG time.... |
Please explain 'Underpowered' ?
Have you used a tamiya SprayWork ? It sprays paint, how can it be underpowered. Is the paint you are refering to really thick or something ? I always found, with various airbrushes that the paint needs to be 'thin'. |
Createx/Faskolor, being water based needs to be sprayed at about 30psi upwards without thinning, thinning it can cause it to spider across the surface. I have a 50l 2HP compressor in my spray/workroom and doing drop shadows last night for two hours, that reservoir was needing to be filled every bout 15 mins or so, so the compressor pump kicking in.
The Tamiya Spraywork is designed for use with much lower PSI spraying paint, hence the unit not having a reservoir, the pump is under a lot less pressure. It is difficult to explain, but if you spray with say Pactra, you can, with some success do shells off cans of air, you try that with Faskolor, and on a TC shell, you will go through two full LARGE cans. |
I guess when you say 2 full tanks, you mean tanks of compressed air ?
Anyhow, I don't use the paints you mention, I use mainly custom colour and it works a treat. Graham originally asked for recommendations to 'have a go' rather than I guess taking painting up professionally. To this end I would thoroughly reccomend the Tamiya unit. The bonus is that it's cheap, has the compressor built in so you need never buy an expensive tin of air or a proper compressor. |
Just to intervene here.. :) The tamiya system looks great especially for beginners.. the faskolor paint similarly is nice and easy to use, easy to clean, and great for beginners..
The two dont look like they will work together though unfortunately because of the pressure needed for the faskolor paints.. might work ?? |
I did say about the Tamiya comp...

Oi.
Who you calling a beginner Jim :) |
haha, sorry mate... you paint very well, with good strong original designs. There is that better ?
I should have said for those who only do occasional painting.. |
Jim.
if you buy my motor-master i'll forgive you. Andy. |
I need to buy some new paints and am considering getting Faskolor / Createx....no idea if my compressor will cut the mustard though. Guess I'll just have to buy a pot and find out!!
As an aside, check these airbrushes out.... http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/A...S_SECTION.html you'll have to scroll down a tad....worth a gamble at the price I'd say!! |
|
that's me sold!!! cheers.
|
Is this a good place to start, :p http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product...0&r=2013&g=103
a couple of quid off as well......... |
I used to use that, but found it unreliable, I bought initialy as it was cheap, but if you want to use the smelly paints, it is a good starter, if you want to use water based paint, you have to up the pressure to suck the paint up out of the jar.

Northy if u wanna cheap airbrush check this one on fleabay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Air-brush-prof...em170066778636 just got one myself fancied trying my hand at spaying was quite impressed with it only got it cos its gravity feed rather than the suction feed i got with my compressor. i used faskolor paint it came out ok i did thin it mind as ive been reading the cfx paintwork forum for some guidance and they all seem to thin createx/faskolor paints with either IPA (rubbing alcohol) or Johnsons Windex glasscleaner (which is mainly IPA anyway) a good replacment for this btw is Carplan screenwash £2.99 for 5ltrs at halfords....LOL If you want a cheap air source u can buy an adapter to attach you air hose to a car tyre valve, run it off your spare wheel ! or if you realy feel adventurous get an old rim with tyre on it let the air out drill a hole in the rim to take another valve connect your air-line to 1 valve , connect the other vavle up to a 12v pump and away u go. Airbrush and air source for less than £20 lets you try your hand without doin your dosh. Thats my hand tip 4 the day....:) |
|
Yes its the AB-130 as opposed to the AB-135 shown in your post same size needle/nozle just larger paint cup.
But for £13.99 u can thro it it the bin if u cant get on with it. ;) I was looking at getting an iwata brush till i saw this brush, thought id give it a go see what gravity feed is like compared to suction, And i can tell u that the air pressure reqired is vastly reduced so a lot less spiders :) |
Gravity is just far better for the Faskolor paint.
|
northy the a130 is the one i use, i can highly recomend it, for somewere between £10-£15 its worth every penny, and the gravity feed guns are always better with createx or faskolor, i use both paints at 30-40 psi, with acheap compressor from B&Q £50 noisey but doest the job,
O lovin the shell on atomic carbons site another of my creations |

re: thinning Faskolor - if you only want to thin it a little, then tap water is useable, but if you want it THIN, you have to use stuff like Windex, water makes the paint pigment repel against the water, so you get pockets of paint in the water, whereas the windex type route, it bonds temporarily to the pigment, holds it together, thins it nice.
Best faskolor for spraying, Fasblack, worst is FasWhite. If you want to back a light colour without affecting it's 'hue' bet sealing it from affects of other dark colours, you can use FasKrome, it is ace. |
JCJC.
No Probs Matey ;) DCM. Cant find windex in the uk , but if you look at its make-up its mainly water with IPA (rubbing alcohol) and a smidge of (so the wife tells me, shes a phd in chemistry) anti-freeze. A good replacement for windexs is carplan screenwash for your car...:p http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/971/windexak1.png |
as long as it is a clear solution, although I have heard people using Blue Windex(??) but if you find something that works, ace, let me know.
|
I you read the cfx paintwork forum they prefer the blue, say it brings out the colour.....
I've got some 99.5%proff IPA coming soon will try that and let u know. The alcohol not only thins but it also dry's alot quicker than either neat or watered down. Im only a novice at this myself , but have read a hell of a lot about it. But as they say its not the equipment its the artist that makes the body shell, and im no artist just fancied a dabble at it after playing with rattle cans. This gives a bit more variety and hey if im no good can at lest use it to go back to 1-2 colour, colour schemes.....;) Just without the fumes which is a bonus in anybodies book. |
If you're using an airbrush with gravity feed do you just need a compressor, hose (to connect the two) and paint or are other things required?
Thanks. |
thats pretty much the basics.
Compressor (or other source of compressed air) Hose, Airbrush,(gravity feed just means the way the paint is feed into the brush from a top mounted cup, as oppossed to being sucked up from a glass pot.) something to mask with if you fancy more than a 1 colour shell, Paint, And away you go, but would recommend a face mask (desposable paper ones do the job), stop you getting multi coloured lungs. But thats personal choice not essencial. And the main ingredients imagination and insparation.....;) HTH |
Probablya pressure regulator would be good to.... and the mask stops the multi-coloured boogies....
