Vintage in Japan

http://www93.sakura.ne.jp/~time-tunnel/index.html

I'm sure many have seen this page already, but I wanted to post it just in case. The text is 99% japanese, but the pics are marvellous!!!

A Lucky Strike BAR Honda sponsored TRF'ish Boomerang! How übercool is that?!

RogerM 28-10-2007 04:14 PM

Egress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

sorry, got all excited!!

Fan-damn-tastic ..... not seen that!!

just realised it's not an Egress, just an egress body on some other chassis :(

SHY 28-10-2007 05:05 PM

(pic from site)

Just bought a NIB baby like this, a Kyosho Progress 4WDS, which I had as a kid. It's grooby baby! :D

Must say some of the pics on this site are worthy of being called "oople'ish"!

I think that first pic is of a Boomerang, not an Egress btw.

I'm gonna hop up a rerelease Hotshot with modern tires and see how far behind it's laptime wise... We'll be running a retro-class in 2008 at every 1:10 OR Nats round next year, it's gonna be big fun!

Modernized vs. Mint...

Is that true???

What are the rules going to be?????

SHY 28-10-2007 05:51 PM

Haven't you guys heard of birth control? You are overpopulated! :D

We're normally 20 drivers saturday, the same on sunday... so we have LOTS of room for fun classes...

Rules will be:
-brushed motors, max. 19 turs
-not newer than 1990 models

Other than that do as you like, it's just for fun! We're thinking about giving extra points for vintage hairdo, clothing etc...

Move up north and you will be an A-driver! ;)

If any of you guys wanna fly to Norway and race with us you are most welcome!

That Progress is ace, I have one just like it in the garage :D

RogerM 28-10-2007 06:54 PM

Boomerang (first 1/10th car I ever owned) in the BAR colours at the front, left rear is a Mk1 Grasshopper MK2 (first 1/10th car I ever drove) in box art colours.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Then the EGRESS bodyshell in silver to the rear right hand side! Not sure what chassis it is on though ..... might be a madcap

I have always wanted an Egress!!!! I was due to have one as my 1991 season 4WD (to go with the Asute I was running in 2wd) to replace the Lazer ZX I had been running (after a string of Mid Optimas) but unfortunately my father passed away the day before it was due to arrive at Puma Racing. There was no way I was going to be able to race (my mother doesn't drive) and we couldn't afford it anyway so I had to ring up and cancel it. Since then I've always wanted one. Driven an Avante 2001 which handled similarly and found it to be one of the smoothest, easiest to drive cars I'd driven to that date.

Anybody got an Egress?????

terry.sc 28-10-2007 08:14 PM

The silver body at the back in the top photo is a Madcap one, mounted on an uprated Madcap.
This is what an Egress looks like.

The Grasshopper belongs to Grahoo and started life as a Grasshopper Mk1 but now has DT-02 suspension. Gearbox is a mix of TA05, TRF415 and WW2 parts.

Still prefer his TA04 based Grasshopper http://www.tam.ne.jp/nic/grh/grhnew.html

RogerM 28-10-2007 09:34 PM

My dreams are shattered ...... off to the pub :(

seriously!!!!!

Still want an Egress ....

SHY 29-10-2007 08:03 AM

Just post an auto search on ebay and I'm sure it'll show up before long! ;)

nobby 29-10-2007 10:01 AM

that grasshopper is mint.

Yeah, I had one back in the day, I made my first races with it. Very fast and smooth indeed, but crappy handling in the rough. A bit fragile and expensive too...
I sold it to buy a ProCat :p All epoxy, but a real race car. I wish I still had the lovely Egress though !

SHY, good to see you back ! How are you ? I have a few vintage cars myself : Hirobo Alien, Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid, Ultima Pro 2, RC10CE (runner), BossCat, YZ10W, Cat 98... And the postman is bringing me an Optima, my first car ! It was cheap as it comes without body, wheels or... screws :o

nobby 29-10-2007 10:40 AM

i'm looking for some vintage rides ether a kyosho optima pro or a scorpion.

if anybody finds anything please give me a shout.

SHY 29-10-2007 10:53 AM

Salut mon ami! Mais c'est trés bien, e toi?

I never left actually... just been a bit quiet on the X-5 forum... that damn thing belt skips so much I had to park it for a while. It's just been under the knife at a friends workshop. So now it has Olivier style belt rollers all over! :D

If that doesen't work it will be parked for good on the shelf, waiting for it to become vintage...

I won't do the same mistake as I did as a kid and sell my babies... trying to complete my blood line of cars now. I'm missing the Wild Willy I, a Wild One (I'll get the Fast Attack in stead), and maybe a mint Supershot.

For vintage racing I'll get a rerelease Hotshot and Frog...

How are you doing? Any more victories?

I'm working in my home town for some days. Rounded up the old local RC guys for some retro beer drinking last nite, it was great! First time in 20 years!!! It seems like temting them with some vintage racing is the way to get them back! :D

For anyone who's looking for vintage >> www.ebay.com -it's the place to find it!!!

For vintage stuff check out www.tamiyaclub.com, there's at least 3 Egresses for sale there in the subscriber trades section. Not a cheap car though and those ones all seem to be mint. There's also someone there who makes alloy versions of all the plastic parts that break.

Apart from there just keep checking ebay.

Northy 29-10-2007 08:07 PM

Terry, I never have worked out how the Tamiya club site works..... :eh?:

G

SHY 29-10-2007 08:17 PM

@Terry, nice collection you got there! *applause*

Was the Egress any good in it's time?

Back in 86 in polar bear land the Supershot was the car to own and race. But I guess that was just because we didn't know better... The TRF501-X in my opinion is the first 100% serious racing car Tamiya has ever made (I know Tamiya probably INTENDED previous cars to be that as well though)...

The site has both free and paying members. Free membership gives 5% discount off Tamiya spares, unfortunately only official parts so no 501X spares. Paying membership gives you a showroom to upload your own pictures and videos, a 10% discount on Tamiya spares(it used to include a 10% discount at Modelsport!) and a separate image hosting service. The site only started charging after it was costing the owner £200 a month in bandwidth fees. It's now so big it has had to buy it's own 2 dedicated servers to run on.

It used to be easier to get around, but it's so big now (22000 members, 45000 showroom entries!) it can be awkward to find anything at first. A search box on the front page would help. Go to 'search' in the 'members' menu at the top of the page, type in the name of a car and all examples on the site should pop up. To see what everyone is selling/wanting go to the 'subscriber trades' in the members section on the top menu. The 'reference' menu takes you to specific Tamiya cars or any other make - a pity the other makes aren't separated out by model, that's why it's easier just to search for specific cars. The 'vintage media' section in the 'reference' menu has various old reviews, adverts and videos, not just Tamiyas.

Blimey, I sound like a salesman:wtf:

BTW here's Jimmys old showroom on there
http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom.asp?id=17

And mine is the link below.

RogerM 29-10-2007 08:55 PM

Thanks for the link ........ that's going to cost me a few quid!!!!!! LOL

As for racers from Tamiya the Egress could hold it's own with anything of it's day, if a little fragile. The Top Force Evo / Manta Ray very nearly became Uk national champ in Jamie Booth's hands. There where also a couple of Astutes that did the rounds at the top end of the RRCi stock championship back in the day .... I certainly went ok with mine.

I have yet to see a TRF501X in the flesh but it does look a great car, think it is the first Tamiya to make a Euro's A ... might be wrong, Jamie might have done that with the Manta Ray... .

SHY 29-10-2007 10:04 PM

Is Jamie Booth related to Phil Booth (legendary 1:8 TR racer)?

terry.sc 29-10-2007 10:30 PM

The Egress was a good competitive chassis, the biggest reason it wasn't as popular is that it cost £270, compared with £175 for the Mid and £199 for the Cat, both proven race winners. High price means less people buy them, so less people to develop it on the track. Jamie Booth did okay with it but didn't start getting the big results until he switched to the Manta Ray.

Jamie did win the '91 national championship with this http://www.tamiyaclub.com/article.asp?id=64

Jamies Astute did finish 7th in the '90 Euros with a car like this one http://www.tamiyaclub.com/article.asp?id=94

Another question: Those cool black wheels on many of the hopped up old cars on the Time Tunnel site - what are they? (where can I buy them?)

terry.sc 31-10-2007 05:47 PM

No, Jamie and Phil Booth aren't related.

Which wheels? Can you show a car with the wheels on? I think most of them are various wheels dyed black.

SHY 31-10-2007 08:34 PM

OK, thx!

The wheels on the first post in this thread. More pics in the Time Tunnel link.

Oh! And does anyone know the part no. for a BAR Honda sticker sheet like the one used on that Boomerang?

super__dan 31-10-2007 09:38 PM

Terry is it my PC or can't you read the text in those articles, I hoe there is something I can do as I love reading the old school things!

SHY 31-10-2007 10:07 PM

LOL! It's japanese Dan... :D You could consider taking japanese lessons!

Sayonara!

super__dan 31-10-2007 10:18 PM

Eh, not it's not, it's Radio Control Model Cars which is a UK magazine.

super__dan 31-10-2007 10:20 PM

Actually I've realised my error, I was saving pics of the thumbnails rather than the actual pics, my bad

guffaw

SHY 31-10-2007 10:31 PM

Sorry, thought you meant the Time Tunnel page :p

Looks like you're right Terry, he drills holes using this template, and then dyes them...

But those round GoodYear stickers - where can one get those?

http://www93.sakura.ne.jp/~time-tunn...custom/130.jpg
They look groooooovy!!!

terry.sc 01-11-2007 12:16 AM

For the Goodyear Eagle stickers look for the sticker sheet for the Tamiya Motorola Lola T94, virtually impossible to find though. Others similar to those are on all Tamiyas formula 1 sticker sheets.

The Speed Disc stickers on the first picture aren't available in white, but Tamiya included red versions of those with the Manta Ray. Those will be custom made, as will the BAR Honda sticker sheet. The only ones I know of are the F1 stickers from here http://www.formula1-rc.com/Default.a...21&CatalogID=1
If they are available they will be a specialist sheet from Japan as you can't sell models with tobacco branding on them anywhere in the world.

SHY 01-11-2007 07:53 AM

Thx!

Wow! That guy is not kidding around now is he...

http://www93.sakura.ne.jp/%7Etime-tu...custom/100.jpg

I see the logo "Autographics" - could that be where he gets the sheets from? Do you know their website by any chance?

terry.sc 01-11-2007 10:17 AM

1 Attachment(s)
Autographics have shut down. They used to be great for all those scale replica sponsor sticker sheets but as sponsors now see scale versions as a way of making extra money with licensing these days instead of free advertising like they used to, all the extra costs (and chances of getting sued) made it non profitable.

What they have left from their stock is on ebay
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/AutoGraphics-of-California
but most of the good ones went at least a year ago.

They used to make Goodyear stickers like Tanaka has used on those buggies, but those are long gone.

Guess where I got the paint scheme for my runner Optima:D

SHY 01-11-2007 10:48 AM

Thx! Those from http://www.formula1-rc.com/Default.a...21&CatalogID=1 look kinda cook, where/how can I buy them? (guess I just have to register first, I'll check... by email it turned out)

Thx also for the Autographics link, got me at least some OK ones... a Pepsi car could be cool :)

terry.sc 01-11-2007 11:55 AM

Those F1 replicas are only available direct from the website. Delivery might take a while as they are based in Hawaii.

SHY 01-11-2007 12:31 PM

Great, thx a lot!

http://www.formula1-rc.com/PortalSto...es/1/10039.jpg
-this will have to do! :D

SHY 08-11-2007 08:57 AM

I've read it's possible to buy "new & unpainted" RC10 bodies for the "gold pan" cars, is that true? If so, where can I get it?

Gayo 08-11-2007 09:46 AM

Try Tower Hobbies.

Toonz 09-11-2007 07:42 AM
