returning racer

Hello everyone, I am returning to the sport (1/10th buggy) after about 12 years out. Have been on the for sale threads looking for some equipment, but as I am a new member on here I don't have a "thread count" yet. (Hence writing this one now! lol)
Just to let moderators etc know I am definitely not a scammer and in desperate need of some racing gear!

Great forum by the way, have been enthralled for days reading!

regards John Jones

John,

always good to see racers coming back to 1/10th offroad. Things have changed a lot haven't they!

I would suggest that a few more details in your profile, at least the vague area of the country you in, would help people feel they can approach you and offer help find kit, clubs and offering advice.

Also might be worth posting a wanted add so people can see what your after. For example I have cars, radios, speed controllers and motors, chargers and cells I am looking to sell in the next few days but can't offer any info to you as I have no idea what your looking for!

If there is anything I can do to help just let me know.

Hope you enjoy your return to the sport and we'll see you racing in the new year.

john333 24-12-2010 12:35 PM

Thanks for the kind words Roger, i'll update some info on my profile. I fully understand the caution needed on "for sale" forums etc.
Yes things have certainly come on a long way from 12 years ago! but definitely for the better in most cases.
I have purchased a Cat sx2 but so far that's all i've got, so have got an itch in my wallet waiting to be scratched lol

John.

john333 24-12-2010 12:46 PM

sorry should have said.....i'm looking for 6.5 brushless motor / sensored speedo, 2.4ghz radio (ideally futaba 3vc), lipo charger, servo (to suit cat) and a lipo battery (not sure of the spec needed as yet)

thanks, John

G-46 24-12-2010 01:56 PM

Hi john,

im also popping back to the sport after 10 years away. so about a week ago i was in the same spot as you, and the 1 thing i found very hard to find was a radio. so how much have you put aside for one??? i may beable to help track one down for you.

the best price for a futaba 3vcs new in the UK was a Demon http://demonpowerproducts.co.uk/prod...roducts_id=435

i ended up buying a new 3vcs but to keep cost down i went for a 40mhz which cost me £240 delivered.

I also must say that Oople guys n girls have been very helpfull...

wacattack 24-12-2010 03:07 PM

You will not find better shop for service and pricing than mb models.

Busadaddy 24-12-2010 03:17 PM

Hi I've been away from rc racing for 20 years went and tested my b44 at ardent yesterday and was amazed at how much quicker everything is. But I love it

brooksy 24-12-2010 03:35 PM

Hi John, if your looking for any info on all the new goodies you can get for your car I'd be going to broxtowes Christmas cracker event on the 28th of dec. If you look on their forum on the main page on here you'll find directions to the club. It's not far from you, just past ikea in north Nottingham. I'm sure the guys there will be more than willing to give you advise on your car and what's needed to get back into it.

Hope you enjoy your return to the hobby.

Phill:thumbsup:

john333 24-12-2010 03:36 PM

Hi G-46, i'm looking down the second hand radio route, as budget is limited, have a few feelers out at the moment, but nothing concrete yet! (around £70 ish)

Busadaddy, I can't wait to have another go! am going to the final 2 rounds at ardent, so need to get some stuff bought asap!

they all look so much more fun than before, and the whole lipo thing is awsome

john

john333 24-12-2010 03:39 PM

Hi Phil, yes I know Broxtowe well, used to race there many moons ago when it was Kimberley (around 1983!!!!!) and raced touring cars at their outdoor track 12 years ago.

was hoping to get there on 28th, other half permitting!

Busadaddy 24-12-2010 03:43 PM

Yes I'm goin to ardent aswell prob see you there. The lipos are unbelievable that was the first time using them and the punch is there permantly which is a bit diff from 1700 sces I think they were lol. If you get any good advice let me no

G-46 24-12-2010 03:49 PM

i raced at Broxtowe with the TC for a number of years doing the TORC championship, fun place but the best thing about Broxtowe was the breakfast i think they called it a belly buster..:woot:

regarding getting a 3vcs for £70 best thing to do would be put a wanted add on all the forums as the only one on ebay at the min is £200.

john333 24-12-2010 03:50 PM

hi Busa, it's a huge learning curve with all the new stuff around. But I have to say it's not really any more expensive than 12 years ago, at least we don't have to fanny around with 5 or 6 sets of cells, and trying to get hold of matched ones like the team drivers all used.
I reckon it's nearly all about driver ability now, whereas before it was about not "dumping" at 4 1/2 minutes! hehe
Track me down at Ardent mate, i'll be the one looking nervous with my car permanently on it's roof after every jump! (must practice the jumping!!!)

cheers, john jones

john333 24-12-2010 03:53 PM

ah, the belly buster, yes I remember now hehe. liked the track, it had a few bumps etc which made things interesting.....

got a couple of contacts for radio's, just waiting to hear......

Busadaddy 24-12-2010 03:54 PM

Prob be pitting next to each other . Watching to se what everyone else is doing.:-)

john333 24-12-2010 03:56 PM

we can be nervous together then hehe

john333 24-12-2010 09:28 PM

just need radio gear now.........

RogerM 25-12-2010 02:38 PM

No need to be nervous at all, just concentrate on having fun!

I'll be at Broxtowe and the next Ardent round (plus Petit event at Ardent between) so pop over and say hi. More than happy to go through stuff with people and help where I can. My new body colours are my avatar pic and will be getting them off Blitzboy at Broxtowe so when will be easy to spot.

Shame you have gone for the wrong cars but hey ho, can always upgrade to a Kyosho next ;)

ardent, broxstow, worksop, robinhood , westbridgford are all good and friendly.

if u can get hold of dave p on hear think he's selling a 3vc and rx??for sale

cheers simon

john333 26-12-2010 01:38 AM

Thanks Roger, not nervous as such......am a very experienced racer. It's more that i'm not going to get much practice before my first proper race, and last time I tried I could not get over a jump if my life depended on it! lol. Can't wait though....am more excited about my return than ever before. I will deffo come and say hello at the meeting (may try and get to broxtowe, so bring your old 3vc with you!)
Not sure about your Kyosho reference, i've always been a schumacher boy hehe

Thanks Simon, they are all the clubs I will be racing at (i'm not a prima donna though lol) have spoke to Roger in above post about radio, but thanks for the heads up

alexb4 26-12-2010 09:12 AM

what about the 3gr ive had mine for about a year an its excellent :) icant fault it and there 200 new or about 100 used of ebay. there realy good radios for there money

john333 26-12-2010 10:20 AM

thanks for that Alex, i'll have a look!

Fast Eddie 26-12-2010 12:44 PM

I'm starting back racing too and looking at the Ansmann kits as they are very well priced, will need a transmitter and receiver used if anyone can sell me one. I live in Chesterfield, cheers guys:p

john333 26-12-2010 02:29 PM

so long as I get mine first!! hehe, only joking......i'm looking at good quality 2nd hand ones rather than the new "etronix" type ones, i'm no expert but have read that some people are having issues with them? can't be doing with my car arsing about on the track!

Alex, I may be thick but I can't find more than a couple of 3gr's on ebay?

Busadaddy 26-12-2010 02:38 PM

I have an Etronix one and is perfect for the money very responsive easy to bind aswell just ordered a 2nd one for my daughter from Pbm

john333 26-12-2010 02:53 PM

you've had no problems then mate? seems split down the middle for people saying they are great, and others wanting to chuck em out the nearest window lol. I have looked at one at PBM it has to be said

Busadaddy 26-12-2010 03:14 PM

Depends how much you want to spend I suppose . I thought I would try one I've been messing about outside and been to ardent and there great no glitching or anything there so responsive aswell. I just got it to get me by really then if I like it in say 6. -12 months time will upgrade

Chalkie 26-12-2010 06:36 PM

I've just returned after a 13 year break and i feel I can offer a little advice, when picking motors try something fairly tame like maybe a 7.5 for 4wd or 8.5 for 2wd. The power delivery of brushless motors using Lipo's is much fiercer and and nowhere near as smooth as you will have been used to.

john333 26-12-2010 07:51 PM

wow so many people coming back into it, a good sign!

Chalkie, thats the thing i'm looking forward to most....all that power!
Maybe i've gone a bit too hot to start with though....got a 5.5 in 4wd.

John

Busadaddy 26-12-2010 08:13 PM

I've got a 9t Hobbywing combo and it's plenty quick enough for me lol

John

I started with a 5.5 in a Cat SX2, big mistake!!! It's not the speed it's the way it's delivered, i've put a 6.5 in for the moment to get to grips with thing as the power was just making the car to much hard work to drive.
This comes from a guy who thought nothing of running say a 10x4 in 2wd when i used to race.

john333 27-12-2010 12:53 AM

sorry chalky, i forgot what I had bought, it IS a 6.5 (novak L) so they are by all accounts super smooth.
I'm hoping some of us returnee's will have raced each other in our previous "lives"!

G-46 27-12-2010 09:44 AM

im going to be doing 2wd and just ordered myself a speed passion 6.5, its going to be a big diffrence to my super stock days in the BTCC and TORC. :D

Ah, a 6.5 should be fine, I think super smooth is relative to the other stuf on the market, as the speed passion set i'm running is by all accounts very smooth but it still seems rather spikey compared to a brushed set up.

That's going to be a handfull to start with, you may want to get a 7.5 to use on some of the lower grip tracks.

john333 27-12-2010 01:06 PM

I remember having a smooth driving style in touring cars, can't comment on what I'll be like now as I'm still collecting all the stuff I need!
Can't wait though, think the power will be amazing, saw a B4 the other day pull a wheelie down the straight! (not the best way to a quick lap time, but impressive to watch)

G-46 27-12-2010 01:45 PM

6.5 should be fine, i can cool it down with my radio if needed, same as john i was know of having a very smooth driving style back in my TC days.

john333 27-12-2010 09:35 PM

All being well I could have everything I need to go racing by thursday!

G-46 27-12-2010 09:40 PM

wish i could say the same, still waiting on the good old royal mail, its all orderd, and the bank is screaming out for some funds.

so what have you gone for in the end??

john333 27-12-2010 10:27 PM

cat sx2 with LRP speedo, KO fet servo, Novak 6.5 motor, 2 demon lipo's and probably a Futaba 3vs which I'm looking at tomorrow (all of it is second hand, I'll no doubt replace bits as I go along with new stuff)
