Wasp racing information

Hello guys

I was on google searching for any information/pictures of my late fathers parts and cars he designed and made which was wasp racing, the search lead me to a different RC forum where someone kindly pointed me in this direction so i thought i might try my luck on here:thumbsup:

I was arround 9-10 years old (now 30) when we used to race at sand down race course in a little team, dad made uprated parts for top cats, couger etc along with pinion gears, spur gears, slipper cluches (which on my google search found some in oz!) he also designed his own car which he made 4 of, the 4 cars where anidized red, blue, bare aluminium (first car made) and black which was mine.

If anyone has any pics of the cars, parts or any info i'd love to hear/ see it!

Radio race car done a few articals on the car and parts does anyone have them issues?

I know its a long shot but worth a try!

Thanks in advance

Gareth

Gareth,

You just jogged my memory!.

I used to race at Sandown Park right by the race course in the 80's and 90's! :woot::woot:.

I also remember Wasp - wasnt it Mark Saddlers father who now live in Horsham and racer there and Taplow?

Neil

Hello neil:thumbsup: yes mark saddler drove one of the cars i belive it was the red one, Terry saddler was marks dad.

From what i remember terry done the distribution of parts and my father designed and made them, i think terry had a big part of running the club at sandown

Have you any pictures?

Dudders 30-11-2010 08:55 PM

No, but I'd love to see them. I might be seeing Mark on Friday night, I'll ask him for you?.

LOL ive still got my Wasp motor case too

Ive also still got a couple of the replacement Wasp Kyosho Lazer graphite chassis sets - one the standard size & battery placements, and the other which had the battery slots angled & offset.

Always was good quality stuff :)

I had those for my Lazer, angle saddle pack chassis!

G stote 30-11-2010 09:52 PM

I'd say the wasp carbon stuff was'nt to do with my father as he was a precition engineer maybe that was made else where under the name....

Dad made things like spur gears from billet nylon, pinnion gears, slipper clutches, ball raced steering mechs and diffs

Nice to see you still remember the name i thought my search would go nowhere!

DCM 30-11-2010 09:59 PM

I believe I had him make a slipper clutch up for the Tamiya Astute back in the day, to use 48dp pinions. I got a load of old mags upstairs, will have a plough through.

dodgydiy 30-11-2010 10:19 PM

i had a fine tooth belt conversion for the original optima that had machined pulleys, they werent nylon though, had a bright orange belt, sure that was a wasp item. pretty sure i still have the pulleys somewhere!

He also made machined ally parts dodgydiy:)

I just remembered he made ally wheels for top cats, boss cats and cougers! thay where flat faced made from ally, he also made a "pepper pot" design (like the old xr fords)

DCM 30-11-2010 10:40 PM

I had it direct from WASP Racing, sent off the parts and drawings, product came back, little fettling, sorted, they then sold it as an upgrade part!

Wow this thread brings back some memories, IIRC the Wasp car was called the Fury and based on a Schumacher Procat, it had the orange/red main drive belt but I seem to remember (could be wrong) that it had a geared rear end rather than using the two small belts like on the Schuey plus the awesome Wasp slipper clutch, I was flicking through an old RRCi magazine at our shop in the office the other day and recall seeing the advert for it.

And the most popualr WASP racing item ever surely had to be the 12 volt soldering iron, everyone had one of them.

From what I recall Spec racing took over the name and continued some of the product line on several years back now. The other company from around those parts at the same sort of time was the bodyshell people -Racecraft, cannot remeber the guys name who run that for the life of me...

The FURY thats the car! i forgot the name of it, its been so long with alot of issues (family)

yes it had a orange/clear drive belt possibley from another make, losi? (speeling) and your right it was geared at the rear end rather than belt driven:thumbsup:

It was a big thing the gearing on the "fury" i remember dad and his brother talking about pitch deepth on the gears, the "fury" had a small spur gear and a big pinnion plus the geared rear end the car was rapid of the line!

jeroen206 01-12-2010 07:42 AM

I still have and use my wasp 12v soldering iron:thumbsup: top bit of kit! got a wasp racing battery case in the shed 2

I only saw the wasp car at the british GP indoors at the NEC, can't remember much as that was a few years ago:blush:, but I can remember a fair bit of machined ally.. and the orange belt. I can't remember who the belts were from, but quite a few people had them on the XL and XLS then the procat. May have been SRM ( Pete stevens, who then became pete's awsome products) that them became RW racing errm I think (may be very wrong) in which case some one can correct me

Luke burley is on here somewere, he may know something,

WASP motor spray?... i remember it...not sure how well it worked?

Welshy40 04-12-2010 11:23 AM

You can still buy the 12v soldering iron as it was bought from wasp by spec racing. Its the only soldering iron i will use trackside as nothing else gets as hot. Great product. I also had various carbon fibre parts for my lazer such as the V battery layout of the cells. Wasp were a great product.

Benjy1 04-12-2010 04:57 PM

I was in that bit at the back of the house many a time for bits at about 12 years old. Only just got back into racing after all these years now 31 but Sandown was where it all started for me and gave me a bug for life which I have just picked up again.:D

Rebelrc 05-12-2010 09:49 AM

I used to race in the 90's and am only coming back to the sport this year.

I have a can of Wasp " New Motor 1 " which I bought in 1996 :o it's still 3/4 full and got used today to clean out a Tamiya black can motor that I am breaking in.

I have a Procat, Cougar and Bosscat in the attic, pretty sure one of them has the Wasp steering, must root them out :D

Belsten 22-02-2011 11:24 PM

I just bought a new in packet ball raced steering set for the cat completed with header card, havent opened it either, yet

kaszal 23-02-2011 09:41 AM

Sweet, I go one of those off Oople last year (for my Procat)

Did wasp do the alloy goodies too? (transmission housing, z bracket)

gps3300 27-02-2011 07:28 PM

MMS did a lot of the nice black alloy bits for the CAT, as well as Team Tanaplan.

Here is some info and a picture I found of the Fury - hope you like.

I had a Procat with some Wasp racing delrin or teflon bits which made it way better when I started out in the early nineties. The soldering iron was brilliant too and the motor spray was great too!

Brings back some happy memories of racing in hideously garish Body Glove pullovers wearing some waaaay baggy trousers that were tight at the ankle :woot:

We looked boss while trying to keep SCE cells from going soft after 3,5 minutes!

simoncrabb 27-02-2011 08:03 PM

Great thread, I remember WASP from when I was a boy.

That's what I love about RC, the people and memories that go back years.

jampat2004 27-02-2011 09:52 PM
