liquid mask help
right i have a brand new jar of the bob divley stuff here and ive given a shell 5 coats of the damn stuff each time its dried before applying the next coat im doing it in thick but not so thick it laves clumps its been left over night in the airing cupboard and is ready to cut.
thing is when i cut it and go to peel it is like its only had 2 coats thinly applied not peeling properly has any one else had this problem with this brand? i had a shell that was allready masked but was with a green masking and i found that to be a lot better but unsure of what masking that was. steve |
cant say i have ever had that problem with divleys mate, usually 4-6 good coats is more than enough, if its hard to remove and feels brittle add some more thick coats,if its hard and rubbery you may have force dried it to quick, again add another good coat it usually softens up abit after another coat, good luck let us know how u get on,
|
yep, like carl, never had that trouble.
as for the green masking fluid, my rcs mask is the only green liquid mask i know of, could be wrong though. |
cheers lads

|
lol ill be ordering it tomoz jon need other halfs card mines empty lol
check your inbox jon ;) |
:wub
The first batch of mask I got was ever so slightly on the thin side. I think this batch might be ever so slightly on the thick side. If needed, you can add a tiny bit of water to get it to your required consistancy. I spray mine through a spray gun so let me know how ya get on bud. Not had anyone say about it being too thick yet though. |
lol yeh if it smells bad ie baby sick it will never work had some like that my self bin it get jons stuff works a treat, and cheap,so jon do i get a cheap bottle now and some candy samples lol pm mate

1 other question jon whats the best to remove your paints cause i made a mistke on one of my shells but dont want to use nitro |
i use a cheap 1mm air brush of ebay or everything airbrush .com and clean it with good old water mate works a treat can even spray it on neat no thining needed
anything above 0.5mm should be ok http://everythingairbrush.com/acatal...SprayGuns.html http://everythingairbrush.com/acatal..._AB_183_K.html |
thanks Jon, might be something worth looking at!
|
my paints or the createx?
my paints, you'be lucky, they stick like.... try using you scalpel blade to scrape off. or a bit of the thinner on a cotton bud (if you had bought some ) :) |

Didnt want to clog up the forum with a new thread, so im taking this one:woot:
I want to give liquid masking a go, painting some touring shells that i have coming tomorrow. Im being tight, and wondering as i only want to try it, if the Faskolor Fasmask Liquid Mask (4oz) is ok to use, as in not a pain in the ass and that it puts me off, i.e doesnt peel that good etc. Ive given masking tape ago and i was Epic Fail once things started getting complicated Havent got a airbrush, just want to use the left over Tamiya air cans that are i have left in the garage lol... Nothing too fancy by design, but would like to back whatever i do with pin stripes around them to define my doodles Thanks for any sort of advice response =] |
it'll work Steve, but needs a few coats. Grab some for me while you're at it :) I've run out.
|
my self prfere liquid mask as i can seem to cut it better than the tape id recomend trying it on a spare bit of lexan to get the jist of it before you go on the shells and remember not to press to hard with the blade as you will score the body
|
I don't hear much 'compliments' about Fasmask, as it is quite thin.
|
have used bob divleys, fasmask and Jon millers, all are good if used correctly fasmask works fine if applied right, but isn't as good as bob divleys, have 3 shells about to be done with Jon millers stuff, tried a small test sample of it and it was good,
|
Divleys and Jon's both have good points.

The newer fasmask is pretty thick now compared to what it used to be. I use it all the time now, as I can't arsed with importing the diveleys stuff.
BUT if the fasmask is being used with rattle cans I would reccomend applying 4 or more coats with a brush. 3 coats isn't enough as the solvent from the cans softens the mask and makes it difficult to peel off. For TC shells you will need more than 4oz. You will need the larger 16oz bottle at least if you have to apply 4/5 coats. 4oz may just do one shell with 3 coats. |
Just recieved some of Jon's Liquid Mask, i'm looking forward to giving it a go.... thanks Jon :)
My first experience of using a liquid mask was with an old bottle of fasmask - but I think it was so old that it had gone off. The first time I opened the bottle there was a big, dried rubbery lump blocking the lid. Although I managed to achieve what I wanted (masking out some lights on a Tamiya Mini shell) Despite many coats (5-6) it just seemed too thin & just broke up when I tried to peel it off :( |
the current batch is a bit thicker than the previous one so you may need to thin it ever so slightly with water depending on your application.
|
Thanks for all the replys, it is appreciated.
I think i might aswell just order some of Jons magic green gloop then, saves me the anxiety that it'll crumble on me. |
Steve,
Fasmask is great, I have used it on hundreds of shells with no issues. I have also tried Bob Divelys stuff which was thinner and IMO more difficult to use (required more coats). Which ever you choose to use, you must ensure you put atleast 4 generous coats on otherwise you may run into difficulties, especially when using solvent based paint. Tamiya is perhaps the worst aswell.... Tel, Are you still spraying touring car shells? I have no time to spray nowdays with Uni and my placement. I have been using plain white shells all season! Not a great look :S Let me know if you are, I'd like a couple doing for the rest of the winter and then some for the nationals/euros etc in 2011. Thanks, Phil. |
Thanks for the advice Phil, i went for a bottle of 16oz Fasmask on your confirmation along with Tel's that its pretty decent stuff.
There was alot of people slagging parma's stuff off, but that ended up being there previous stuff i discovered. Thanks Steve |
should have given me a shout buddy
mines cheaper aswell  |
anyone know of a supplier as done an internet search and only importers and wholesalers came up in the results
looking for liquid masking fluid cheers |
Think you can get direct from Jon Miller via his website RCS graphics, or Mike Parker sells it on Number5rc website
