Desire RcRacing Scorpion :- Orders now being taken
I have had quite a few PMs and mails asking about this mid motored converstion for the RB5 and now am in a position to pass on some details.
The car came about as a result of trying to extract the maximum performance from a mid motored 2wd; a car that would be equally at home on low grip / greasy surfaces as ultra high grip surfaces whilst providing sublime drivability in those conditions we typically race. Here are some images of the production car as they will cover more than a 1000 words can. Some better quality and more detailed images should be available in a few days once the website is live. The original design brief was a simple one; 1) Use the minium of bespoke components, maximum use of RB5 kit parts and keep all 'wear items' stock Kyosho parts 2) Provide optimal weight distribution and transfer without extra ballast 3) Variable stiffness chassis to tune for different grip levels, as at home on slippery as well as grippy surfaces 4) Maximum amount of geometry tuning options whilst providing a stable base for those that prefer to "just drive it" 5) To be able to remove the transmission and also change the antisquat with less screws removed than stock RB5 whilst utilising the Kyosho gear case Additionally the option of quickly converting to rear drive when the conditions required it was to be included, something that whilst hard to achieve without compromising the mid motored application has been achieved. The conversion is now ready for supply and has been proven on a large range of track surfaces and conditions. More details to follow as soon. |
hi Roger. The tags in your post were a little messed up. (all I got were incorrect links)
I'll repost them, if you don't mind. :) http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...020_122758.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170809.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170802.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170746.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170728.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170705.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170642.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...017_170620.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...021_130131.jpg |
Thanks Tim, more haste less speed!
|
Nice work Roger,
Glad to see its finally here  |
Been a long time in the making Mike but as I said to you at Silverstone I wasn't going to post any pictures till it was ready for general release.
Have a go next time you see me (or one of the other drivers already lined up) mate, would be interested to hear your feedback. |
Mike feel free to have a go with mine also, although both mine and rog's are the same car im running the full sp rear end,see which car feels best
Though mine is all new and shiney hey rog:p |
LOL ... I like the lived in look of mine. When you have put as many laps on yours as I have mine well see how they compare ;)
What Jason meant to say is that we are trying the different combinations and options Kyosho so kindly provided for the rear end of the Scorpion. Hopefully there should be quite a few more around the tracks VERY soon. The car has been proven on multi surface, astro, grass, carpet and dirt. All this with limited setup change required, one of those cars that most people should be able to pick up and run the stock setup anywhere. |
double post

Roger - this is using the standard Rb5 3-gear diff?
|
Transmission uses the RB5's gear case and internals unchanged (other than flipping the diff around) and adds an external idler gear to give the correct rotation, not just overall but in our opinion of the spur / slipper assembly for superior control in the air ... basically you get for free similar to what you would if you fitted the brass flywheel to an X6 transmission.

You can see the idler at the bottom of the gear cover in the 6th picture. That is a very early attempt at cutting the gearcover, now we remove much less material and that leaves the idler much less exposed.
Work on a bespoke gearcover is on going, hopefully be ready for release very soon. |

I am sure G'.
Without pictures harder to visualise but I'll try; External idler box Rotor + pinion = anticlockwise external idler = clockwise Top shaft + slipper = anticlockwise internal idler = clockwise Diff + wheels = anticlockwise Internal idler box Rotor + pinion = anticlockwise Topshaft + slipper = clockwise 1st idler =anticlockwise 2nd idler =clockwise Diff + wheels = anticlockwise I hope that comes across ok ... a picture would have been a load better. |
Well I'm still not convinced! They rotate the opposite ways!

Ok mate, when I get a moment I will draw a picture .... till then trust me ... I'm a doctor ;)

Roger looking very good & all the hard work is paying off. Just like to get my hands on one have good gander it wont be long ;) if he lets me have ago lol |

Actually I am .... doctor of engineering ... I don't put all the letters on my e-mail sigs as I think it makes you look a bit "try to hard". As for the Scorpion, well there should be a couple in your part of the world very soon. If nobody else will let you have a go pop over to Ardent when i am next there and run mine. I use Spektrum and sticks but changing a reciever isn't hard if you needed to use something else! |
Ok gents, sorry for the silence ... life has been super manic lately but I've kept moving on with Scorpion and true to my word I am starting to take orders mid November as promised.
For those guys who have already been in touch I will be mailing you in the next day or two to confirm a price and ask you to confirm your still wanting the pack reserved for you. As soon as that is done I will post the ordering details here, I think it's only fair to reward the guys who have shown long term interest to let them have first call on the first batch. Just so you know I have all the parts for the basic kits sitting in front of me other than the build instructions, they are being produced this weekend ... there is a shiny new RB5SP2 waiting to be stung :D There are quite a few things in the pipeline for both Scorpion, RB5 and also ZX5-FS, along with a couple of suprises ... stay tuned :D |
I'm with G here,
X-factor's flywheel thing is used to lessen the effect of the motor, because its rotates in the oppo direction to the motor. so where I do agree that your method does give more control in the air with the motor and slipper assembly spinning in the same direction, I disagree with it doing the 'same' as x-factors brass flywheel, I was of the impression that the xfactor brass flywheel was to lessen this effect EDIT - add an idler between spur and pinion AND a brass flywheel, wow, now there is some serious airtime stunts to be had :woot: |

I did say similar effect ... not identical effect.
Either way, With the rotor, top shaft and diff / driveshafts / wheels all rotating in the same direction you do get very good control in the air and of weight transfer when braking. |
Normal service resumed ... working away for days at a time with no net access is a real pain.
Please accept my appologies for the slower than acceptable replies! |
Firstly thanks to everybody who has ordered Scorpions, the first batch is now sold out.
If you are interested in a car please let us know, we are hoping to have another batch ready to pre Christmas delivery but in order to get them out to Santa in time we need your order quite quickly. A further batch is planned for January too. |
Roger,
I think that better, well lit quality photos should really help sales. I'd like to see a fully equiped car, for example. :) |
Agreed mate, the only small problem with that is I am totally incapable of using a camera ... I don't mean not very good I mean incapable!!!
There will be a build thread coming soon, hopefully with somebody of a much higher photographic standard than myself (my dog maybe) taking the pictures. Any photo requests and I will make sure some are taken! |
LOL @ the dog!
OK, I'll wait. |

Sarah has taken some pictures of my own car tonight ... hopefully they will show you what you want to see, if not just ask! |
Thanks! I like how you use the little LA36 and 37 inserts to setup the rear toe-in.
What body do you use? Stock one or Phat-bodies style shell? Last but not least what is the price? :) |
The inserts seemed to be the best option to me hence why we used them, allows use of both narrow and wide hinge pin holders to suit everybody ... notice the hinge pin height possibilities and huge range of antisquat adjustment too?
The car is designed around the use of the standard shells, I run a Trident on mine, some others run a Sword which if cut to suit fits around teh rear end very well. There is a bespoke body on the way and it is very pretty, designed by a man with an eye for the curves :) The price is currently £145 plus shipping, just add an RB5 and a few little pieces (most of which I bet are already in your pit box) and your good to go. Development isn't static either, seems like every other day I sit in front of the CAD station at the moment but there will be no changes which require any of the main components to be re-purchased, that side is all finalised now. All the parts compliment the car and help make it faster, none will be necessary for the build etc. |

LOL Roger - you will be please to hear the car went together nicely - Just like Cheryl and Simon!! I didn't even use the instructions as everything was obvious. No issues at all in the build and look forward in testing over the festive period. See yah at Ardent |
Well I guess there is no better time to say WELCOME TO THE TEAM Mr Evdoka.
I am very pleased to have you on board Tony and look forward to working with you to keep pushing the development of the car forward. Loverly tidy instalation and thank you for the build photos. Do you want to share those or shall I? Looks like you are first to air with the completed production specification car with the Stinger (tower) on the tail I see too ;) Now guys, I know there are a few more out there close to being ready to run ... lets be having the pictures, I'm like an expectant father pacing the ward :D |
You can sort out the pics Roger :)
ps - The car all up with Lipos and motor etc etc etc is 1510g with mini pins which i am sure are heavier than mini spike so right on the weight limit more or less, that allows one to put the weight where they want it - I like this a lot!! |
It was designed to be light mate, balance front to rear isn't far off either ;)
As you know I run mine without weight in a lot of the time ... but I do add a bit in when it gets slippery, be Rude not too :D |
ill do my best to get my pics up tonight Rog, i wanted to get the lexan covers down the side done first, but im entirely sure how to about doing yet so ill post pics before i do it :)
Are the stinger towers in stock now by the way? |
Mmm bery nice pics, i notice you are running big bores on the front but not the rear?
|
Ian, yes mate the Stingers are in. Did you want one? I've not got you on the list for some reason however I have kept one back for each kit that has gone out just in case!
I have spares of the towers alone (no spacer) too in case people wanted to carry them as spares. Rob, sure Tony will be along shortly to explain why he's not got big bores on the rear but they do fit without issue. My guess would be having suitable spring rates and/or the necessary 97038 longer shock eyelets. I currently have the big bores on my car with the development tapered pistons in. I could tell you what the spec is but then I'd have to kill you (or charge you for a set LOL). Don't worry Rob, you'll be getting a mail when I have pistons ready :D |
Quote:
Looks alot better in Tony's pics now though sorry Roger think your pics was good as mine S!&t lol :p Will have good gander over the weekend if your playing buddy. Yes def be waiting for the email about the pistons tut tut!!! |
Rob, I can't take photos for toffee!!!
If you want to you should be able to take my Scorpion out for a run on Sunday if you want to. |
