Stupid screws?

Hey i just sttted building my madrat kit but i have some huge problems with the screws. I cant tighten them all the way. Ive tried all my allen wrenches and hex drivers but they are just spinning around inside the screws.

Have you had any problems like this?

Benjab 10-09-2010 12:18 PM

Hmm i think its only a problem with the 4 screws in the front bumper. I just dont know how to tighten them :(

Shannow 10-09-2010 12:26 PM

Mad Rat kit screws are pretty bad, I found that over time I rounded off a lot of them and the only way to get them out was to dremmel a slot into them. These days I've upgraded the screws on the entire car with stainless steel and where possible use cap heads as these use a 2.5mm key instead of 2mm - helps no end and takes all the stress out of needing to replace bits and not being able to get the screws out.

wayne 10-09-2010 12:31 PM

i found that n i replaced pretty much all of the screws.......pain in the back side ..but the quality is just no there

Benjab 10-09-2010 12:35 PM

Ok i gotta buy some new screws then :( but ive only had problems with 4 screws. Its just really annoying!

well i run mine a quarter of a turn off fully tight ..i dunno if that is correct but thats what i do

Benjab 10-09-2010 02:34 PM

Okay thanks!

Benjab 10-09-2010 03:05 PM

These screws are making me insane!!

ryan_93 10-09-2010 03:10 PM

If there is an interest i can supply full high quality stainless steel screw kits for a madrat?

Benjab 10-09-2010 03:18 PM

My lhs has a lot of screws so its not gonna be a problem. Its just annoying that i have to buy screws!

Benjab 10-09-2010 04:02 PM

Just bought some expensive titanium screws.

Benjab 10-09-2010 04:16 PM

Oh my god what is going on!? These screws are just as crappy :(

ryan_93 10-09-2010 04:19 PM

it maybe that the screws are too thin or short for the holes in the car?

Benjab 10-09-2010 04:32 PM

No thy are same size as the standard screws. Man this is annoying :( i also ordered an aluminum hex driver with the car but its not in stock

sosidge 10-09-2010 04:33 PM

Are your hex drivers in good condition?

If they are worn you will strip the screws just as badly as if the screws are worn.

Always worth having quality tools to hand if you want to do a quality job.

PS A lot of the titanium screws sold for RC are pretty poor quality as well.

Benjab 10-09-2010 04:39 PM

I dont think the tools are worn. Ive tried many allen wrenches and hex drivers. Its really annoying that. Didnt get the hex driver that i ordered :( im always unlucky

bigred5765 10-09-2010 04:42 PM

are the ones you are metric or imperial what do the say on them ie 2,5mm, 2.0mm or 1/16 5/64

Benjab 10-09-2010 04:47 PM

The screws are called m3

bigred5765 10-09-2010 04:53 PM

what size driver are u using not screw size

minke 10-09-2010 05:06 PM

Get yourself an EDS 2.0mm driver, you will have no problems, even with the standard screws

Benjab 10-09-2010 05:20 PM

Im using 2mm drivers/wrenches.

Minke i have ordered a "high end" 2mm hex driver but its not in stock so it would be a little stupid to buy one more

buy some decent tools

Benjab 10-09-2010 05:25 PM

Omg did you read what i just wrote?

minke 10-09-2010 05:46 PM

I dont know what 'high end' tool you ordered. I just recommend the EDS range. I rounded a few allen keys off trying first time, this one takes the old screws out, even with damaged heads.

Benjab 10-09-2010 05:54 PM

I just saying high end so you know its not a cheap crappy tool. Im gonna buy the hex driver my lhs has. 12 poundsnor something like that...

Benjab 10-09-2010 05:56 PM

I just have a question about the a-arms. I can move the left arm up and down freely but the right can only move up and down a little bit. Know whats wrong?
(cvds and turnbuckles are installed)

minke 10-09-2010 06:05 PM

sounds like the cvd may be hitting the nut from the diff screw, if it is all assembled (correctly assuming) then try taking the diff screw assembly out and put it in from the other side. Instructions are pretty vague in the manual

Benjab 10-09-2010 06:14 PM

Okay thanks! Do i have to take the gearbox apart?

minke 10-09-2010 06:29 PM

If the gearbox is all assembled and in the car, then no, you don't. You can take the whole screw out and re-insert from the other side. Just be careful.

again this is another common problem fella..........make sure you have the diff in the correct way [i made that mistake ] the screwhead should be on right hand side ..should solve it if not ..there is always the washer trick

Benjab 10-09-2010 06:38 PM

The washer trick? But thanks im gonna try it :)

Benjab 10-09-2010 07:16 PM

I think i did it right :) thanks

Benjab 10-09-2010 08:16 PM

Oh no no no :( the plastic thing that holds the nut in the diff is broken :( dont know if it can be glued ?

you broke the diff nut ...howd you manage that ...

nicefrog 11-09-2010 01:46 AM

I've replaced all the screws on all mine because that's the worst part of the car. But you can build one without stripping them IF you use a torx driver for the entire build right from the start, if not then your sure to ruin at least a couple screws and a few allen keys also. The diff is not the same length on both sides so you have that in back to front

Benjab 11-09-2010 07:41 AM

Wayne i have no idea :( but i think i could make one myself.

Nicefrog: okay but i think it could be my tools because i also broke the new screws i bought.

Sory but u got another question. When i put oil in the shocks and put the cap on they feel very good and responsive but after a few hours they a alot less responsive. Whats wrong?

are you using the kjit plastic shocks? .......they are not of the best quality putting it politly. ......i replaced my shocks with a set of ally ones ...depends on what your gonna use the car for bashing or racing?
bashing ..then the shocks in the kit will be ok ...but for racing id look at getting better ones when you can

Benjab 11-09-2010 08:53 AM

I thought the only problem was the shock caps? Im only gonna be racing with it. Nothing serious though. Im gonna buy a hudy hexdriver today
