Endurance Electric final

does anyone fancy running a 10 or 20 minute final at some one-off event/race this winter?

maybe even if its just a 'race' in between qually and finals with a group of racers?

Lee - I fancy coming over to your track some-time-soon to see how long I can get out of my car.

woOdy 01-09-2007 07:45 PM

sounds interesting. I would be up for it. I could also be up for a le mans type race. 12 hour enurance.

franki 01-09-2007 08:28 PM

Maybe we could do it for charity???

footey 01-09-2007 08:38 PM

i ran a endurance race for 3 hours as a sponsered event to raise money to run my little club i had some rules like amount of batts allowed per team chargers and stuff it was great fun well worth doing:)

Medders 01-09-2007 10:19 PM

a team endurance event would be a great idea

PaulRotheram 01-09-2007 10:35 PM

I think Chris is goin for more the 20 min A main stylee they hade in the states a while ago with trucks.. I'm up for both ideas though, as a one off!

super__dan 02-09-2007 07:36 AM

10 mins we could do with normal equipment i.e. 4200's and brushless.

20 mins NEEDS LIPO which is a different kettle of fish for most of us.

Chris Doughty 02-09-2007 09:44 AM

I like the idea of both.

a 'special' one-off final where people might need special equipment.

or a long (3 hour plus) team endurance race.

I think this is something electric racing is missing, but is possible to be done with todays technology.

also note, this is suggestion/idea for one-off event, nothing to do with the BRCA national series

super__dan 02-09-2007 09:58 AM

We have a 6 hour race in the North East (Mike Leonard at Teeside). It's been ace the last 2 years, the first time cos we won and the 2nd cos we ran team vintage and still came 3rd.

It really is great fun and one of my favourite events of the year!

LEGEND 02-09-2007 10:18 AM

Yes the Mike Leonard is a great example. It is 6 hours of pure fun and excitment:D

josh_smaxx 02-09-2007 10:50 AM

I might enter that next time its on, when its on?

Why does it need liPo? All you need to do is have a pit stop to change batteries in the middle. Makes it more interesting in a 20 minute race, do you go for gearing for 10 minutes with one pitstop or gear for less runtime and two pitstops.

After all they used to run 30 minute finals in US oval racing in the late 80s with 1400mah batteries. For a one off event it is unlikely anyone will build a quick change battery system.

Chris Doughty 02-09-2007 02:55 PM

the thing about most electric endurance races is that they just have '5 minute' stints and swap driver and car.

the aim is more to run 1 car for the distance, be it a 20 minute final or a 3 hour endurance race.

with regard to quick change batteries, more power to the guy who puts in the effort to do that.

terry.sc 02-09-2007 05:47 PM

Yeah, the old endurance races (including the Paris 24 hour race) just used one car with battery/motor/tyres/repairs as needed. PB must have sold many more quick change battery mounts than Mini Mustangs. If they could make the buggies run for 24 hours in the 80s surely modern chassis can manage it.

Lee Martin 02-09-2007 07:05 PM

20 min lipo!!!

lets do it!!

do you fancy putting on an exibition race at one of your winter meetings then Lee?

Terry - yes, (we always say this.. but...) Donisthorpe 24 hour race was amazing, one car, 24 hours, quick change batteries, hour long stints driving the car with pit-stops...

Lee Martin 03-09-2007 08:48 AM

im up for it!!!

where do i get me a lipo!

Chris Doughty 03-09-2007 08:52 AM

See how long you can run on nmhi's I think you would be able to get close to 20 mins.

Nick Goodall 03-09-2007 09:33 AM

Either a few one off long races or a Team race would be awesome - Maximum concentration needed at CML Raceway too so that would be good to see how people got on......

Do it do it!!!

Mossy 03-09-2007 10:06 AM

I definately be up for an endurance. Surely we could sort maybe an 8 hour one at Lee's, perhaps 2 cars and teams of 5?

Chris Doughty 03-09-2007 10:21 AM

wonder if 1 person and 1 car could last a 6 hour endurance?

How about with 1 set of tyres? :D

I can't imagine a brushed set-up doing the distance but no reason you couldn't do it with brushless really? You'd probably not make all the jumps every lap without the chance of breaking it though so would probably be hard work resisting the temptation of ramping it 5 hours in :)

Definitely something to plan though, a 6 hour race on a Saturday followed by a big pi$$ up on the Sat evening would always be fun.

bigred5765 03-09-2007 11:10 AM

i think a 10 -12 min final would be vary do able with are std equipment 2wd or 4wd,i would love it

Southwell 03-09-2007 11:18 AM

There was a similar thing a few years ago, we all ran the same 15 turn motor and were in team of 4 or so, was a brilliant time, i'd def be up for it! Teams of 4 or 5 with even ability to make it fair.

Jonny_H 03-09-2007 11:51 AM

Three of us shared a 15-minute IC truck final at a wet Coventry club meeting a while ago.

I was leading with my 4WD at 8 minutes (both before and after the trucks had stopped for fuel) when my 3300s dumped.

One of the other guys, running brushed, was still moving at 15 minutes and came third! :)

jim76 03-09-2007 12:51 PM

I used to race 5 hr endurance races at Ashford years ago. they were the highlight of the year, a really good laugh. Teams of 5 drivers with their own car and you had a quick pitstop change over to swap the transponder from one car to the next and off you went.
This would be easy to set up with todays cars. You could run 8-9 minute stints with brushless and 4200's.

I'd be well up for a single car endurance race, but i think the team event would be easier and cheaper to organise as it wouldn't involve butchering a car and motor like a single car event.

Lee - defo organise one for CML raceway!!

Chris Doughty 03-09-2007 01:04 PM

how about 'open' endurance rules?

you can run a team event with transponder relay type, or you can enter just 1 car, or you can enter just 1 driver?

it should please everyone, even the hardcore enduro pureists

Yeah can't see why not - makes it fair really as you'll all still have to stop and change batt's or whatever so would be cool

I remember a Team Race we did at Aylesbury, must have been around 1999/2000 but there was me, Craggy and Pidge in one team against Ellis, i think Truman..... and Bloomfield but we still won  Remember that Lee??

Chris Doughty 03-09-2007 01:19 PM

how many tire changes do you think a car would need for 6 hours?

in the dry at CML Raceway Bow-Ties work well for at least 7 runs, the ribs up front don't really wear.

I recon you could be quick with a set of tires an hour?

Lee Martin 03-09-2007 01:21 PM

i think if u use M2's u could go for an hour! they would get better!

ashleyb4 03-09-2007 01:22 PM

I could!!! The question is could the marshalls keep up with me crashing:D

If you want to try it ill drive solid for 6 hours aslong as the car is going nice and i have a pit bitch. and someone to feed me.

would need M2 ribs also, else it a bit of a drifter on the tarmac first corner.

I reckon i've got enough to supply everyone for a 6 hour race with M2's :D

Mossy 03-09-2007 01:27 PM

I think we definately need to get this sorted!

millzy 03-09-2007 01:27 PM

im sure i have 15 sets in the house

Chris Doughty 03-09-2007 01:30 PM

definately, all round yours then Lee???

I really want to go for running 1 car the whole race, I even fancy trying to go the distance myself :wtf:

ashleyb4 03-09-2007 01:33 PM

I would love to see if i could go the full distance of 6 hours you would need a good pit bitch.

A

josh_smaxx 03-09-2007 01:35 PM

Will the timing equipment do 6 hours? Id love to do it but somehow cant see my parents taking my half way down the country to smash my car on the first corner :D

tc2k 03-09-2007 01:42 PM

The Mike Leonard event is great, 6 hours racing non stop, you never stop doing something either racing or helping your team.
It works that your team marshalls your cars and sometimes other teams help by moving you further away from your marshall :D
Its all a great day and for a annual thing its definately worth doing and is a really good day and for a good cause.
Different to what your proposing though as you do as long as you can which usually is 6 or 7 minutes and then you just switch with a team member, stick a battery in and wait till its your turn again. I think 6 hours with one car would be rough on it lol, i guess with brushless though it should be oaky but I wonder if it would last that time without thermalling
