Which paint mask is this, or what do you use???

OK painters, I need to know which mask or material I need to use to achieve this sort of effect (the small dots on the shadow):

Thanks in advance.

I think that is perforated sheet, not sure where you get it from, can you put a bigger pic up Ry?

ryanlownie 24-08-2010 08:57 AM

Sorry, can't find a higher resolution photo of it. I'm sure I've seen one of the painters on here using it but honestly can't remember which!!!

It's basically what looks like a huge sheet full of holes, all equal in size and spread evenly on the sheet. Holes are probably 1.5mm in diameter.

DCM 24-08-2010 09:12 AM

you may get it in a paint freehand mask, but dont they do a copper sheet for the modellers looking like that?

jonmiller 24-08-2010 10:06 AM

yep, perforated sheets

quite hard to find cheap flexible ones. i got a couple ones left over from my computer case.

just type varied wording like perforated sheet, mesh, metal etc into ebay or on the internet

Net curtain ;) twitch twitch :D

QuackingPlums 24-08-2010 01:55 PM

How do you get this stuff to stay flush to the surface whilst painting? Is there a clear low-tack glue I can use or do I just hold it down and pray? Whenever I try this I tend to get varying results, depending on the curvature of the surface I'm spraying. :S

jonmiller 24-08-2010 02:22 PM

there are various stencil adhesives (spray) out there.

bigred5765 24-08-2010 02:42 PM

the mesh is so fine jon when you spray through it it doesnt spray a square, the gaps are between 1.5mm and 2mm so it looks like a circle, the paint would have to be so thin to get the square shape ,probably wouldnt adhere to the shell,

bigred5765 24-08-2010 02:44 PM

spray mount works should be available from any good art shop

jonmiller 24-08-2010 02:44 PM

I have some vinyl sheet that is covered in 1.5mm holes. It is designed for printed graphics on real car/bus windows so you can still see out from the inside. I have not tried painting with it but I cannot see why it would not work.

blitzboy 29-08-2010 03:58 PM

telboy 29-08-2010 09:54 PM

G, sort us a 12inch sqaure of that stuff and I'll have some off you when I see you next.

I just found a plastic sheet full of 1/1.5mm holes from hobbycraft. really flexible plastic used for crochet I think, well it was in that section anyway.

The vynil is the stuff I'm after as we used to use it at work when we printed stuff for windows etc.

blitzboy 29-08-2010 10:37 PM

Will do tel see ya at 345 s mate
