B4.1 Brushless - First Car

 Hi Everyone,

Tomorrow I am buying my girlfriends 8 year old son a Team Associated B4.1 Brushless RC10 and I'm looking forward to having a go myself :)
Looking to get him into racing and visiting the track at Bury after some practice.
Also looking at Orion advantage IQ 605 charger and an Ansmann Racing 7.4v 5000mAh Li-Po battery pack.
I have been told by Ben at Bolton Model Mart that this is a great set up for a beginner.
What are your views on this car and set up for an RC Virgin?

B4 is a great car to hone your skills with. Very strong and lots of spares available. Before you get out on track, I would just get it checked over by a local expert, just so they can give it the once over. This should help you enjoy the car more.

Happy racing!

Whiskers 14-07-2010 07:14 PM

There might be a couple of guys down at the Bury track at about 7 tomorrow night if you want to come for a blast around. Just check the Bury metro forum before hand just to make sure because of the rain and all that.

GFoz 14-07-2010 07:28 PM

Cheers lads. Buying it tomorrow but he is only getting the car on the 20th for his birthday so wont be at the track tomorrow but looking forward to checking it out soon.
I will keep an eye on the website for practice days.
Are there any other tracks in the area and are there any indoor tracks for when the british summer takes a turn for the worse?

Cheers,
GFoz

Whiskers 14-07-2010 07:30 PM

For indoors there is roundabout raceway and bury occasonaly do indoor meets in harper green leasure center near horwich.

GFoz 14-07-2010 07:39 PM

Cheers for the heads up Whiskers, just found their website:

I think it's a great setup and hopefully other than some tyres and maybe springs there's nothing else needed.

budgio 14-07-2010 08:05 PM

The Ribble valley club run indoors just up the road from you near Darwen

http://www.mac-design.co.uk/style/MAP.html

im not sure how often they have their club meets though.

ian h 14-07-2010 08:14 PM

We have a couple of these running at our club and they are very good, as mentioned above springs and tyres are all that's needed at least for our track anyway, blue and silver springs and minispikes tyres.

Cheers mate,
I will give them a call and see what they say about the Darwen venue.

Why would the springs that come with it not be suitable?
What do the different colours refer to when it comes to springs?
Do you need to change the tyres for each race?

Spring colour refer to the spring rate i.e. stifness

The springs that come with it possibly would be fine for a beginer...

No need to change tyres for each race either...just as they wear grip falls away...

Thought it would refer to stiffness but how do you know which springs would suit your local track? Is it just trial and error?
Also can you get spoked wheels for a B4 in Black?
Cheers,

ian h 14-07-2010 09:27 PM

Blue front springs and silver rears will be about right for most Uk tracks either grass, astro or carpet. Never seen black spoked rims but the White JC rulux wheels are spoked and look good.

Good stuff, there is a certain fraternity on here that believe yellow wheels to be gay!

mole2k 16-07-2010 07:49 AM

Yellow wheels are gay! Although the JC Yellows probably would actually suit my shells...

Congrats on your purchase :D

If they are worried about yellow wheels making them look gay they have serious issues.
I did not say Pink wheels! :p

 Well Lucas was made up with his new birthday prezzie - until I had a go and....

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5183/1649206.jpg

Smashed the front end into the curb on a carpark... DOH!

Wonder how much that will cost to get fixed?
I will take it back to BMM and get them to have a look at it.

Think we will go to the park in future and practice on the grass far away from concrete.
These things are quicker than I thought, great fun!

Do I need to get different tyres for using on a grass and gravel mix?

Cheers,

peetbee 01-08-2010 11:09 PM

Oh I bet you were popular!

Shouldn't be too bad, looks like just the front pivot block (9563) maybe the front hinge brace if you're unlucky! (9564)
If the alloy front hinge brace was fitted, then it would have saved the pivot block but you'd have broken the wishbone instead!

Might be worth picking up a couple of spares to save Lucas having his driving time cut short in future!
Personally I'd get a pair of front wishbones (9578) and a pair of rears (9582), plus another spare pivot block!!
The more spares you carry it always seems to be the less likely you are to break anything! (front shock tower 9568). ;)

Have fun

GFoz 01-08-2010 11:38 PM

Yeah, very popular
Thanks for the advice, think you may have a point reg spares.
Deffo need lots of spares for when I have a go anyway
Thats if he ever lets me have another go.
Cheers,

nicefrog 02-08-2010 12:46 AM

oops :), race buggies and concrete usually don't mix so well. They last well on dirt though :). Does the local track have practice days?

Si Coe 02-08-2010 01:04 AM

No, but we have an easily climbed over fence!

We need practice just to get used to the speed and steering first.
We only had about 10mins before the crash and have never had one before.
Once we get used to it I will take him to the track near us in Bury.

What tyres do I need for grass/gravel?

Cheers,

peetbee 02-08-2010 08:19 AM

For grass the general rule of thumb is Schumacher yellows in the dry and Schumacher/Ballistic Buggy Greens in the wet, both mini spikes.
Gravel I have no idea sorry.

GFoz 02-08-2010 10:17 PM

(Sorted Now)

Front Bumper #9562
Bulkhead #9563
Schumacher Mini Spikes(Yellow rear/Green Front) fitted to the new JC wheels.

& Hinge Pin Brace (FT Blue Anodised)#9665
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/815...gepinbrace.jpg
That lot should cheer him up a bit and make his buggy a bit stronger

Was also going to get blue front and silver rear springs -
until I found out they are only sold in packs and at £24 for both I didnt think it was worth it.
OR is it?

Cheers,

peetbee 02-08-2010 11:04 PM

All the springs are available seperately:
6478 Silver rear springs £2.65
6497 blue front springs £3.79
both prices from m-k-racing (other modelshops available!)

Ah, I was not offered that option and was only shown two packs with all different colour springs in them.
Out of stock at m-k racing so I will just order them when I am in BMM next.
Cheers dude! :woot:
