Castle Howard Meeting

I have been asked if we would like to run a 1 day meeting at Castle Howards annual racing themed event. The date is 18th June, I don't think any thing else is on that day is it?

Anyway, I just like to gauge opinion, who would race? It's a great opportunity to show what we do to many people, and perhaps get a few interested in the sport.

If this is going to happen, it needs to be done properly, which to me means the following:
  • We need a decent turn out of people so the racing is as continous as possible.
  • We need to look professional, i.e. decent set-up and track.
  • We need to entertain the public (so a huge feature, maybe a table-top where you get loads of air, but land safe on the downramp).
  • We need to be "racing", perhaps run a Reedy race format????
I spoke to Tom about it at Teesdale today and he thought it was a good idea, just need to know who would likely come?

There is the possibility of a few perks for racers and family/friends that come with them, which would be free entry to grounds and the event, but this I will have to check (on the family/friends front, but I will make sure they know this will probably limit numbers.

I'll try and get details of whats going on, usually there is some really cool and wierd stuff.

For anyone not sure, Castle Howard is about 10-15 mins max from York, along the A64 towards Scarborough.

This has the chance to become an annual event as long as it does not clash with anything else.

I need to make sure that we get a decent area, and they realise that we might damage the grass a little, but I'd just like peoples opinions and or ideas please.

Cheers

Graham

Right, I've been with Julie and Phil to look at the site tonight and it is huge!

This meeting will deffo go ahead! :D

Not sure what format we will run, but I think Phil sounds keen on the Reedy race format, so that sounds cool. :)

I'd like some ideas for "track features" please, what would you guys like to see? Remember it has to look good for the public.

Any chance of a show of hands as to who thinks they'll be there? Could be used as an ideal test session!

EDIT: I have been told the following other attractions will also be there:

Giant Scalectrix
Ferret racing
Terrier racing
Snail racing

Possibly others aswell, sounds like it could be a good laugh to me....

jimmy 03-05-2006 06:29 PM

ferret racing ? on the same track ? :jimmeh

What else is on at the same time ?

Northy 03-05-2006 07:01 PM

I think everything is on all day long Jimmy.

Our RC track will be regional (or better!) standard I hope. We need to look professional!

RobHatcliffe 03-05-2006 07:23 PM

Good chance that we'll support this one, as we're not doing the NW series. I'll mention it to the other Bury Metro drivers that are doing NE and see what kind of interest there is

Northy 03-05-2006 07:28 PM

Thanks Rob, If you need any more details, or something to stick on the wall near the results at a meeting let me know.

I will be there. We need to get vermin making some of his *good* jumps, just don't let him touch the rest of the track:p

PS. Don't let me touch it either cos it will be rubbish:o

Northy 03-05-2006 07:37 PM

Tom, I hope to be able to make some jumps that will be re-usable for use at the regional.

Any ideas for what we want?

I like the sound of it anyways. What sort of format to the racing ? i went to RAF cosford and saw a round of the RRCI series there in 1988, when I was a lil kiddeh, before i raced. and I dint really get the whole setting off apart thing and who was winning! haha

Run every race like a race, and if you are winning, slow down a bit !!! is that the idea ?

jimmy 03-05-2006 07:44 PM

Just get vermin racing round, that is always entertaining to watch..

Northy 03-05-2006 07:49 PM

As we are there to entertain the public we will have to run line starts like back in the day! So getting to the first corner first will be the key to it!

I fancy the Reedy race format if the software will run it, it works like the clubmans did where you race different people in your different races and scrore points for finishing position in your race. Therefore every race is a race! :afro:

We're going to have a meeting to sort all that sort of stuff out, but I'd really like some input for the track features while we still have time to do something.

graham with your knowledge on track building,i know youll turn out a good one, raced on nearly all your regional tracks and theyve all been good, will have alook on my calender but pencil me in anyway

Cockerill 03-05-2006 08:23 PM

I'm defo up for a reedy race format, never raced one before but it sounds good. Plus every race should be good to watch.

As far as the track goes, Can we dig it up? If we can then that is a start,m if not we will have to get vermin to get some wood from wicks and get building. More jumps = More fun. More Overtaking = More Entertainment.

RobHatcliffe 03-05-2006 08:31 PM

I'm sorry I can't physically help with track prep, but being down here in South Manchester does make it a bit difficult.

Bearing in mind that Joe Public will be watching this, we need the track to be eye catching - lots of air, a long straight so the motors can stretch their legs, you know the drill. We need features that will make the spectators say "that looks fun, I'm gonna have a go at my local club"

Some handouts giving information would be useful, along with club details, websites etc etc.

Northy, if you can put together a flyer fairly quickly I'll dish them out at Bury on Sunday. I'll have to make it clear that we're not trying to nick drivers away from the NW regional though - I don't want to incur the wrath of Roger (again)

darryl 03-05-2006 08:32 PM

more entertainment=more crashing:p

How about having the Reedy format but with normal grid starts, grid positions being picked at random?

I'm up for building some ramps if someone can supply some el cheapo plywood.

VERMIIIIIN!!!! :p

Hi chaps
Sounds like a great idea, i'll ask at Teesside on Sat night to see if i can drum up some interest.
Couple of questions though,
Will it be 2wd, 4wd or both? We had 18 members in 2wd & only 5 or 6 in 4wd at Bury so 2wd would be better for our members (& more may come to Castle Howard)
If you run Reedy/interclub format (which will be great) will you do staggered starts like at the interclub events? eg i'm F5 & if i start off alongside Northy, Rich Lowe, Tom Cockerill etc i'll get whooped, wheras if i get a decent head start at least you lot might have to work a bit before you pass me!!!
Only asking because most of the Teeside lads are F5 or F4 and wont stand a chance against you superstars which might put them off a bit.

G30RGE 07-05-2006 10:56 AM

Been following this with interest - we did a similar thing a few years ago at the great north Motorshow at (the then) Lambton Lion Park - turned out to be a great event to get the public interested.
The one we did was over 3 days so we had 2 days of qualifying and 1 of Finals - ending up with a 'Grand Final' where we took the winner of every Final (ie A thro E F G or whatever) and actuall worked out the starting grid based on results.
We ended up with the A final winner going off around 5 laps after the last winner - in the end - all finished on the same lap!!

Couple of pointers for you (some of which have been mentioned)

1. Get some info printed up with a little bit about the sport, the BRCA and Club Details for North East Clubs.

2. Contact Mike Chilvers (BRCA Pro) see if he can loan some banners or BRCA info - also publicise it on the BRCA 'Shows' calendar

3. Make sure you have a reasonable sound system

4. Commentary! you need it for every race to explain what is going on. This is different to a club/regional meeting!

5. Safety Notices and fence around the track (sample notices in Club Manual on BRCA site)

Apart from that - enjoy it - sounds like it will be a great event, and hopefully and annual one (mmm Regional next year???)

Barry Williams 08-05-2006 11:04 AM

Graham
Spoke to lads at Teeside on Saturday night & about 8-10 seem pretty keen to do this event (all in 2wd) & i havent spoke to all of them yet so may hopefully persuade a few more. Any chance you can get a flyer or entry form in time for Batley regional so i can spread the word at our club?
Also, can anyone tell me if Batley are running an outdoor meeting this Sunday 14th May as some of the lads fancied a day out at a differant track.
Thanks

Northy 08-05-2006 12:00 PM

Barry, I'll see what I can do!

Thanks for your help.

I am up for this if I can make but back of holiday the day before depends how tired I am What about a long jump competition during the break at lunch or you could do three round one mid morning dinner and mid afternoon.(With the cars that is).

notlawnomis 13-05-2006 04:58 PM

I know its been said, but is this meeting definately going ahead. Just we're thinking of booking a couple of pitches on their caravan site, if it is???

Northy 13-05-2006 06:05 PM

Yes, this meeting is going ahead.

I am hoping that we (York club) will be having a commitee meeting one night this next week to sort out the finer details.

If you have any more questions, please post them here so we can sort them out at the meeting.

Thanks

G
