Cougar - What motors are people running?

Just interested as to what people are running and what wind etc.

Looking at an 8.5 or 7.5 for my SV. Got the 8.5 already

sime46 02-05-2010 06:34 PM

6.5 sp,v3. Thats in mine.

ian h 02-05-2010 06:36 PM

I'm thinking 7.5 for mine, should be enough for me on our track.

Jonesy 02-05-2010 07:53 PM

6.5 SPv3 at the min although it's about to drop to a 7.5 for Blyth National, 6.5 is a struggle with my thumbs at the min, still driving the car as if there is a motor hanging out the back of it!!

mw02veg 02-05-2010 08:02 PM

7.5 with a 12mm rotor.

chatts#725 02-05-2010 08:12 PM

novak 6.5 light in mine

bigred5765 02-05-2010 08:14 PM

6.5 v3

mikeyscott 02-05-2010 09:17 PM

Think I will go with my v3 8.5. Will change the spur to get the right fdr for the motor 80 or 81 I expect

Timee80 02-05-2010 09:27 PM

7.5t ballistic for me i think

kwiksi 02-05-2010 11:47 PM

Speed Passion 9.5 V3...as soon as it crosses the pond.

Raul Garcia 03-05-2010 12:31 AM

Speed Passion V3 10.5 here....

Michiel H. 03-05-2010 06:18 AM

17.5 V3.

i'm not a very good driver yet, track isn't large.

But looking at the gearing i might be in trouble, any 72T spur or so fit from other brand?

pfree 18-05-2010 12:37 PM

Motors

Has anyone had a problem with the motor panel hitting the battery holder housing? I just can't get my SP V2 club motor to fit! Looks like I will have to buy a new V£ at more expense!

bigred5765 18-05-2010 12:58 PM

or remove the two posts??

This is what I'm using with 23/78 gearing, nice and cool!

eichkay 18-05-2010 01:58 PM

Ive currently got a 8.5 Tekin in mine on a SPX lrp esc...seems to have good pace at my local.. but its loose clay.

mikeyscott 18-05-2010 03:36 PM

People using RW spurs?

I am on a 79 / 27 with 8.5 v3 but have a 78 - 83 in my box

Swiss 18-05-2010 05:30 PM

Running Schumacher Spurs, never had a problem with the original ones, or version 2. Running 24/83 on a 6.5 Tekin Redline.

Paul

mikeyscott 18-05-2010 05:34 PM

I'm RW during the size so I can get a better FDR on my 8.5

Yep they are sweet! As I said earlier running the 78/23 on a 7.5 ballistic

snej 18-05-2010 06:46 PM

i´m running a 21,5 T graupner for the german stock class. at the moment with 28/78.

mikeyscott 31-05-2010 03:31 PM

My 8.5 got pretty hot yesterday on a 78/28 I assume I'm under geared then?

JustARcFan 31-05-2010 03:38 PM

My 8.5 is cold with a 78 spur / 26 pinion

Mmm ok odd. Have you cut some holes in the shell at all?

JustARcFan 31-05-2010 03:42 PM

1 big hole at the motor side

Need to look at doing this then too :( Get a nice shell and then cut holes in it

JustARcFan 31-05-2010 03:50 PM

If you do it with a body reamer it doesn't look bad at all.

Yup that's what I'll do

Aran 31-05-2010 04:04 PM

Can't you cut 1mm or 2mm rectangle out and have them like a grille, then heat them up and curve them in a bit.

Simular to how F1 cars used to be. I reckon that would look cool :D
Like this here

mdb_75 31-05-2010 05:00 PM

Go down to a 26T pinion too, I'd say your 7.2:1 fdr is overgeared. with a 26T you'll be 7.8:1 which should be better for your temps.

Personally though I'd say even that's getting towards overgeared for offroad and would use a 24/25T max unless you have lots of long straights?

Got a few on the power sections..

http://www.torchracing.org.uk/gallery.php

Tempted to change the gear to what you've suggested, but also try a 7.5 V3 or look at a 12.3 rotor.

mdb_75 31-05-2010 05:14 PM

With a 7.5 you'd have to go to a smaller pinion again.

Yeah that's not a problem. I have 78 - 83 spurs in my box so can adjust as required

mdb_75 31-05-2010 05:18 PM

That looks a good track Mikey! Plenty of tight twisty bits too! You'll have to find out what gearing others are using with similar motors to yours at your track to see if you're way out or not, but I'd say you need to drop 2 or 3 teeth at least.

Thanks, it's a bit narrow in places, but we'll be sorting that out.

We had Grant and co down at the weekend for an awesome day.

Wondering if I'm just on the power too much for the motor. I'm not wanting to sell it as I want it for Petit if it's on next year.

Based on the FDR calculations I could also look at 82/25 which will give a 8.53 FDR

Thats some difference to the 7.2 your running now. I'm running 23/78 on a 7.5 which seems ok on our grass track. I would say that 25/78 would be more like it for the 8.5.

I was originally going by the recommend FDR chart on the speed passion manual. I'm crap at guaging FDR

23/78 is 8.82

25/78 is 8.11

I'll get things changed and experimented with this week.

gazhillAE 31-05-2010 07:59 PM

Speed passion V3 6.5t
80t
22

mikeyscott 31-05-2010 08:03 PM

So what FDR would you look for in a 8.5 / 7.5 as you can achieve similar FDR with different spur and pinion combinations etc.

whjdm069 01-06-2010 03:03 AM

does any one know where I can purchase a smaller spur for the cougar?
