Cougar pinion/spurs...

The manual says one should be able to mesh a 25 with an 83...

I presume the kit spur is an 83?

The biggest pinion I can get to mesh is a 23!

Why?

Smartalec 02-05-2010 04:43 PM

Did you run the Cougar today Simon?

manual dosant say you can run a 83 with a 25 pinion it just gives you a gear ratio for that combo,
and your right 23 is the biggest you can run propperly on a 83 spur witch is kit std

ian h 02-05-2010 06:39 PM

What is the internal ratio of the cougar sv?

Yeah it does, it says maximum tooth sum is 108, ie 83+25.

But that's what I want to know, if 23 is the maximum others have found you can fit. Hmm, though these setup sheets from Tom & Simon suggest they've run a 24 with an 83.

Aaaanyway, looks like I'll have to get smaller spurs to get a ratio for that particular motor.

Alec: I managed a couple of dry runs with it this morning at TORCH, and it's a blummin' lovely car. Mid-motor suits my driving style a lot better than rear motor.

ha guess they used the cat chart then hey, cant make a 25 fit i just tried
u can squeeze in a 24 but it is a squeeze,

2.6.

2.4 and 2.8 optional.

Mossy 03-05-2010 07:35 AM

I spoke to Tom last night and we not be running 83 spurs. I was given a first batch of prototype ones with no numbers on, so I assumed it was an 83. It looks more likely we are on 81, as i can make a 25 fit if needed and i do run a 24.

Si

I'll have to go to an 80 I think in order to get the FDR I need for my SP V3 8.5

Cockerill 03-05-2010 11:03 AM

As Si said, we're not on 83's, but 81's (I've just counted mine). I dunno why I thought it was 83 but that's what's on all the setup sheets, should actually be 81.

simoncrabb 03-05-2010 11:12 AM

Phew, mystery solved! Cheers MossCock!

So what size spur comes with the kit and why does it not say on it ? Or would that be to easy ???

niggs98 03-05-2010 11:59 AM

83 comes with the kit

Cockerill 03-05-2010 11:59 AM

83 and it does

The pre-productions weren't marked, hence why I got it wrong :(

phil c 03-05-2010 12:02 PM

I got my car yesterday at bury and it does not say on the spur what size it is

Michiel H. 03-05-2010 12:21 PM

Hmm I thought they had it engraved on it where the slipper pad fits, I could be wrong though

phil c 03-05-2010 07:12 PM

Nope deff not there tom

mikeyscott 03-05-2010 07:25 PM

Yup I didn't seem them on two kits.

I'll be fitting my 80 RW spur.

Think Neil will be doing some 79 a& 78 spurs  - I'm happy with mine, but had a few people mention that they want smaller spurs

bigred5765 03-05-2010 07:26 PM

the one in are kit was a 83 and it has no size marked on it,

pfree 08-05-2010 07:55 AM

help!

I'm just setting my Cougar up now. I've read quite a bit about gearing on here but it's all a bit new to me to be hnest. At the moment I have a SP 10.5T brushless motor i'm going to use until i've got used to the car.

Can someone tell me what pinion I should use??? ( I have the standard kit gearing.)

mikeyscott 08-05-2010 07:58 AM

What FDR does the motor manual recommend? What motor is it?

pfree 08-05-2010 08:00 AM

sorry whats FDR? It's a speed passion 10.5 V2

teamxray 08-05-2010 11:21 AM

RW are doing 78 and 79 spur gears to fit the sv and sx2

fastinfastout 08-05-2010 11:30 AM

:o

if this is all new to you, then I would discourage you to run a SV.

I mean, the SV is an all out competition car. Not the best car if your starting out.

FDR stands for Final Drive Ratio, which is the final gearing of the car, which is calculated by, which in this case is:
spur (81 or 83?)
divided by
pinion (your choice)
multiply by the cars internal ratio (2.6)

with a 10.5, maybe an fdr of 8

so go for around 24 or 25 pinion to start off

mikeyscott 08-05-2010 11:36 AM

One what grounds?

You've got to start somewhere and you're already gone for a sensible motor.

RW will do smaller - [email protected]

Mike
