Cougar SV gearing

Could someone suggest what size pinions/spurs would work with a LRP X12 7.5 motor?

Would be useful to get some ordered up now so it's here when the car arrives.

Me & Si have both been running 24/83 outdoors on Speed Passion 6.5/7.5's. I'm not sure what Grant has been running but I'm sure mike will be able to tell you when he sees this.

Much obliged kind sir

pizzaman 22-03-2010 03:48 PM

is the gear ratio the same as b4/x6 ? and does it use 48dp pinions?
cheers

niggs98 22-03-2010 04:16 PM

dont know about the ratio but it does use 48dp

Cockerill 22-03-2010 04:29 PM

With 23/33 external ratio gears I think the overall ratio is 2.6:1, so the same as a B4 gearbox

Grants is running Nosram Pearl Evolution ISTC with a Nosram Pure 7.5 , plenty fast on 24/83 with standard internal gearing, and running cool.

im guessing 83 spur is what comes with the kit ?

Im putting a speed passion 8.5t v3 in with a speed passion LPF v2 , Any recommendations on settings and gearing ? im guessing start at 23/24 pinion ?

I would say higher, 25 at least.

Is 80T the smallest Schumacher offers? Thats too big to get the right gearing for spec racing here in the states.

Perhaps AE spurs fit depending on pad size? I know Kyosho fits Ae and Vice versa. Could try with both spur and pads from Ae.

In some CAT SX threads it was mentioned that AE spurs fit ith the centre hole expanded to 8mm. Pad size seems to be the same.

mw02veg 26-03-2010 04:55 PM

Pad size is not the same. the Schumacher one are smaller than the Asso ones.

Mike

Mr. Red 26-03-2010 05:35 PM

To answer Kwiksi then. Use Ae spurs and expand the centrehole to 8mm. Also use Ae pads.

David Church 26-03-2010 05:42 PM

I have had no problems with the Schumacher stuff, just use it:thumbsup:
And no hassle with buy this or that, make the hole larger, jump on one foot and blow your horn when finished, dialled:p

mes 26-03-2010 07:10 PM

I think the problem is not the quality but rather the size of the Schumacher spurs. For stock motors, you'll need spurs in the lower 70s.

Cockerill 26-03-2010 07:19 PM

What ratio do you need for stock motors?

Yes exactly. For example on my previous buggy...RB5SP w/2.6 internal. I used 72/30 for a 17.5. I may have to use AE spurs and drill center, but I hate to ruin spurs if they don't come out right.
Here are some starting suggestions that I have gathered for diff. mfr's starting points. An 80T is too big to get these ratios.

Epic cans
6.0:1 to 6.5:1 for 17.5
7.5:1 to 7.0:1......13.5

LRP can
5.5:1 for 17.5
6.5:1 .....13.5

Speed Passion
4.6:1 to 6.0:1 for 17.5
4.8:1 to 6.0:1......13.5

Novak
6.5:1 for 17.5
7.0:1......13.5

Mr. Red 26-03-2010 10:06 PM

What does a spur cost U? 3$? AEs are available at 78, 75 and 72. Bring out tha calculator and do the math;)

kwiksi 26-03-2010 10:37 PM

$4 to be exact.
I know the math.
I don't have the tools to perfectly drill out centers of a spur gear. It would just be nice if smaller spurs would be avail.

bigred5765 26-03-2010 10:51 PM

wonder if the mi4 spurs fit

Where do you want to insert the slipper pad?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to use a body reamer for expanding the hole? Of course you would have to expand it carefully and stop at 8 mm.

Edit: I just had a go on a 72 and a 75 tooth AE spur. If you hold the body reamer straight and check the diameter with some calipers from time to time, it seems to work quite well. Of course, it is not absolutely true to the centre, but the deviation is not too big, approx 0.1 mm to max 0.3 mm depending on where you measure, and the pads and discs will help to centre it, too. To be on the safe side, I also ordered some AE slipper pads.

Raul Garcia 28-03-2010 12:22 AM

According to Muz, the layshaft will have a 8mm bore. This is not the same bore as Associated and Kyosho spurs. I think 80t with 17.5 or 13.5 will be plenty gearing around 7.5-1.

mes 28-03-2010 02:24 PM

According to the exploded view and the homepage spare parts list, the spurs are identical to the CAT SX versions, i.e. 8 mm.

You are correct. I think Schumacher is thinking about alternate options for spur gears. It will all be resolved soon. I think the 80t is still going to be plenty for the 13.5 racer.

HI all
trying to set up a mates cougar.
He has a Nosram matrix with a 4.5 and a 9T motor, he wants to run the 4.5 cos he thinks he will go faster and thats better.
Anyway he has the standard 83 spur what pinion should he have if he runs the 4.5 and what pinion if he runs the 9T?

Thanks

Rich D 26-02-2011 05:51 PM

4.5 ? Motor ? Thats wayy too hot for a 2WD.

Most of the fast lads here ( Euro A finalists fast ) use a maximum of a 6.5 in 2WD. 7.5 is normally enough for some tracks !

jcb 26-02-2011 07:24 PM

I got a 78 tooth spur from RW Racing for my Cougar, smallest pinion I can fit is a 22, not sure on the largest. I was just looking at a how to move weight rear-ward and this seems to have done the trick.
