RC BODYSHELLS IN GENERAL..

i was wondering instead of bodyclips holding down the shells, is there a more quicker way and more stylish way to attach the shell to the chassis/
because bodyclips if i speak for most people are a real pain in the bum and dead fiddly. something like a screw cap or clip on the top maybe?

GRIFF55 17-02-2010 05:46 PM

you could try velcro?

apple_fanta 17-02-2010 05:51 PM

never thoight of that like :) but after constaltly bashing wouldnt the dirt just make it more likley to not stick?

Aran 17-02-2010 06:03 PM

halfords do some heavy duty stuff, £8 for 1 metre

apple_fanta 17-02-2010 06:09 PM

Just replace it. I got mine from tesco. Was about £1.50 for 70ish cm. Usually lasts the life of the shell.

Top tips are to make sure your chassis is perfectly clean (motor cleaner will do the job) and to stick some heavy duty tape to the inside of the shell and stick the velcro to that. Makes the paint much less likely to come off.

when raced offroad used velcrono problem

apple_fanta 17-02-2010 09:54 PM

velcro is the way to go then hmmmmm ill try it by the way where could ya stick the velcro to actually make the shell stick coz not sure if hyper 7s have much space to stick the shell on like the velcro cant exactly be placed on the sides...

wacattack 17-02-2010 11:33 PM

Velcro its all i ever use

Ben.G 18-02-2010 02:04 AM

Velcro is all i`ve ever used to

velcro. With ah little cyano to stop it coming off. Male velcro* on the chassis, female** on the shell.

*hard and rough
** soft and fluffy

imo you need to use body clips for 8th scale, velcro is good for 10th scale but not the bigger cars....

I agree, and also with 8th scale you need to pull the side of the body up to fiddle with the engine sometimes too.

Yeah, like you know how to do that!!!!! ;)

I'd have to say that body clips are the way to go. If a bit fiddley and unsightly, they fix the body positively to the chassis. The velcro can come loose in a race and end up fouling dampers or steering - could end up losing you a race. John Lewis do some hard core 3M velcro in the haberdashery section if you want to go down the route.

apple_fanta 19-02-2010 01:04 PM

Yeah but they are in my opinion so annoying it's not the look am bothered about. They are just annoying on am 8th scale because it's so fiddley. They hold the chassis fine but when it comes to taking the shell off or etc they have always gotta be removed. Velcro on the other hand if you like I dunno forget to turn ya Rx on or sething you could just pull the shell off. With clips you have to pill them out again lift off the shell and then go about your business. It's just convenience for me rather than looks :)

ive got some extra long body clips so if its a tc you only need 2 to hold the body down (1 at the front and 1 at the back)

apple_fanta 23-02-2010 10:10 AM

no mine is hyper 7.. there just really a pain in backside to be fair oh well ill have to persevere! :D

In my experience, clips are much more reliable than velcro on modern cars.

Saying that, I still use velcro on my RC10 (as I have for the last 20+ years) since the sides of the chassis tub so closely match with the sides of the body.

Cheers,
Ty

Heavy duty Velcro. I bought a box of it from the local ahrdware shop, think its 5 metres and all my cars with tub chassis' have their bodies secured with it.

Just had a random idea, how about a fixture like you get on cuff links, so you would put a hole in the body as normal put it over then twist the fixture to secure?

I would never advise them! The amount of people I see run them on TC's and the come off in a crash or roll then ruin their heat/final cos of the body coming off and on!

haha, only just seen this...

I know it has to be done, but I don't know 'how' it has to be done.

I also know that revving it while its being done leads to an angry face from the tuner :woot:

Interesting idea.. but surely this would only work if you could "push down" the body over the post for 5 or 8mm so you could swing the bar 'round?

how about having a slot in the body, and turning a bar like this in a flat "yaw" plane, so it locks the body down when turned 90 degrees from the slot's orientation.

But even so, it'd not be very well located in the direction of the slot, and the slot would be weaker than simple round hole. Hmm..

How about just a thumbscrew over a threaded post?

or just had another idea - how about an arrangement something like the disc holder in a DVD-box, where you push down on the middle of a three-pronged affair and the prongs move in a bit, releasing a the hole in the body.

Or even simpler, just two "barbed" split pin that would go though the hole and snap open, holding the body in place. Between the two halves of the split pin, you could jam someting in there when you need the body secure. a little rib or something could retain it. Hmmm. I guess a picture would be helpful here. will post again with one.:eh?:

...thinking through my fingertips here...

Cheers,
Ty

This is what I had in mind. The little lock on top hinges over to lock the prongs apart. when you need to take the shell off, you can flick the lock back with a fingernail or something, and the prongs can come together so the shell can come off.

It would be nice to have one-piece posts- pins can deffo be a pain when they jump off and get lost in the grass at the most critical times...

What do you think?

Cheers,
Ty
