B4 Modding
Well, I decided to start another thread as the other got hijacked in to a 'slag off the modders' thread...
I'm nearly done with the first prototype chassis, after much dust making with some GF sheet and a dremel... Just need to finish off the rough edges and drill the holes then I can throw it together and see how she looks. I'll pop some pics up on here when it's done. Overall the chassis is about 80-90mm wide in total (from memory, I'm at work now and can't remember my measurements!), with cells in a saddle formation running cells 3 front and 3 rear, moved forward slightly. A Futaba 9550 servo will go in the front, with the Spektrum Rx just behind it, and the ESC will go above the cells at the back, mounted on the top deck. She's nearly there now, will get pics posted ASAP! :) |
wear a mask when playing with CF dust! - EDIT - I see GF, still nasty though
as Cree said before, that stuff goes in and never comes back out :o |
don't worry, I did!
It's all over the floor of the garage though...:o |
cut the sides off a B4 body and glue flat lexan to the 'edge' thats what I did on mine.
|
but that just keeps the battery arrangement the same, mine is running 3x3 across the car, rather than 6 inline. everything's down the centreline of the chassis, and once it's carbon fibre it should look sweet.
Just going to have to make my own bodyshell now! |
dude if you cut the sides off a b4 shell you will have
side moldings to fix a shell on to |
yes, but then it won't be narrow...
I don't think the shell will fit around the front end of the top deck anyway. I'm going to have to weigh it up once it's together. |
pics....pics....pics.....pics
|
when it's together I'll get some taken and posted... hopefully over this weekend.
|
i'll drop my chassis off tomorrow night if you want mate, are you in at around 7ish?
ps - no butchering of it!:eh?: |
yep, I should be in, golfing in the avo, but should be home in the evening. You can take a look at the bits pre-assembly if you like!
|
Got any photos then Rob of the new body?
|
Use a Tamiya Hornet body, that is narrow...
N |
erm.....
the moulding didn't exactly go to plan... it's getting a super sleek and aerodynamic pepsi bottle job... just got to paint it... :D Must get photos! |
photos then
|
it looked quite cool, considering what it actually was. He also brought a spare shell/pepsi bottle :D

any pics thn? go ok?
|
yeh we want piccies.
I never drank my coke bottle, I just chucked it away lol. Coke is evil ;):D |
i'll try to get pics up tonight, once i put it back on the car.
As a first prototype it went well, was actually easier to drive than the standard chassis, which I changed back to halfway through the day. Found a little problem at the rear end during the change, but it'll get re-worked for prototype 2, which is on the drawing board at the moment. I was very happy with performance, seemed to generate more mid-corner grip, and wasn't as 'snatchy' as the standard chassis seemed later in the day... not that there's anything wrong with snatch mind you... :D |
DUDE!!!:o
|
SWEET!!!:D
|
DUUUUUUUUUUUDE, WHAT'S MINE SAY??????
|
The car looked really good, corner speed was well impresive, crashes were too tho:D . What colour did you paint the coke bottle, looked nice!
|
it was tamiya transparent red, backed with a dusting of trans. silver, then metallic red, then black to darken it off. The next one will be brighter, so i can see it!
Yeah, the crashes were all on purpose, to strength test it... honest.... I had a mare on sunday! me and kidderminster never did get on... :D  |
yeah, cos walking into our tent, and half-volleying your car at my face really does help!
from what i saw, the new chassis had bags of potential, really stable considering the amount of grip it was generating. It'd look awesome if you use carbon fibre on mk2. In fact, i'd probably cream myself :D |
mk II will still be white GRP, much easier to cut and shape.
The final will be CF to get the weight down, but i'll probably get fibre lyte or someone similar to make that one up for me. mkII will have a narrower top-deck, stronger rear end, and better battery mounts. |
Stan loves a strong rear end:D
