engine wont stay running without the glow starter

my engine when itook it out last nite started up fine however it doesnt stay running when i remove the starter im guessing its the plug however cud it b a oring thing incarb if its broke etc?

jamiekerr14 05-02-2010 08:05 PM

Try checking your idle screw mate-it maybe out too much causing the engine to die. Try looking in your manual for the Idle screw and maybe turn in in a quarter of a turn and try. It sounds to me like the idle is too low but cant tell unless were there.. try that and come back to us. And maybe put needle settings back to factory aswell and tune from there..

apple_fanta 05-02-2010 08:20 PM

im gunna try with a new glow plug tonite with my mate and if that doesnt work ill use your reccomendation and let you know you on most tonite if not tomorrow?

MALLET 05-02-2010 08:48 PM

If it doesn't start tonight, while holding open the throttle up fully, turn your bottom end screw in fully and then turn it out 5 1/2 turns out then turn the top end screw in and then turn it out 2 3/4 turns and then you should be in the right ball park on needle settings.

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 08:45 AM

Nothing is working guys I've set the needles out 5 and a half turns on bottom end and 2 and 3/4 on top end. I've changes glow plug and even let it run for a while with the ignitor on to warm up but still when I come to remove the glow starter it cuts out right away could it be fuel, fuel lines anything like that? Every possibility please mention

dave g 07-02-2010 09:16 AM

i would hazard a guess your too rich on the lsn

while the engine is running with glow starter on,nip the fuel line between finger and thumb to stop fuel flow..the engine revs should rise after a few seconds..if it rises a lot then you could be too rich on lsn,if it rises only a small amount your about right on the lsn.

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 09:49 AM

I'll see how that goes today. Fingers crossed. But even if the LSN is too rich should it still only work when the ignitor is on? Too rich mean it's extinguishing the plug right?

dave g 07-02-2010 09:52 AM

correct

if the lsn is too rich then the glow plug wont be able to stay warm enough to ignite the fuel, the glow supply keeps the plug hot.

what engine is it and what plug and fuel are you using?

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 09:57 AM

The car etc is hobao hyper 7 tq sport RTR the engine itself is a Mach 28.
It's a 20 % fuel mix I used to b on 16 %
as for the plug it's the standard one that came with it so if I'm honest I couldn't tell you coz I don't know :/ maybe the fuel and glow plug doesn't go?

dave g 07-02-2010 10:00 AM

is it a new plug you have put in?

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 10:03 AM

No it's just the same one in as from when I got the package.

dave g 07-02-2010 10:04 AM

then you need to try a new plug..

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 10:08 AM

That's just it though. I've tried another plug and the same happens.
The only thing I haven't done is the LSN so fingers crossed if not the LSN what else cud it be?

dave g 07-02-2010 10:11 AM

you tried another NEW or 2nd hand plug ?

try it and see how it goes.

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 10:26 AM

Well me and my mate were supposed to go to a race day today and ended up not going because we was not ready.
I tried his glow plug in my engine. But also it's his fuel that I used also does this still matter?

dave g 07-02-2010 10:29 AM

again..was it a NEW plug you tried?

if you change fuel then you would normally have to retune the engine a little, however since your at factory settings it will need tuning anyways.

ive never seen a hyper engine that would start and run at factory settings, they were always set way too rich.

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 10:32 AM

It's a second hand one. But as of now it's been replaced with the old one that I used before. What's your recommended settings in each needle?
I'm very new you see had the car about 2 months

dave g 07-02-2010 10:37 AM

you need to try a NEW plug.

you can set back to factory settings then lean both needles half a turn and see if it starts and runs ok...but new plug first..you see what im saying dont you??

NEW PLUG

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 10:49 AM

Yeah I get you haha get a new plug. A hotter one I'm guessing yeah?

DCM 07-02-2010 10:56 AM

I would say, start with the kit style glow plug, if you are having issue's with starting, then going back to basics...

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 11:06 AM

going back to basics? like setting the needles again?

DCM 07-02-2010 11:09 AM

set your needles to factory, new glow plug (correct for your engine and model), charge your glow supply too

apple_fanta 07-02-2010 11:18 AM

ok cool. i really hope i get it up and running tbh.. its sat here for like two weeks now

apple_fanta 08-02-2010 12:03 AM

Guys I've worked the problem! O bought a new plug today and boy does it feel good to know it's all good :D
btw me and my mate were playing about and his car seemed to have a problem.
When he accelerated his car would make that high pitch ring as if it was speeding up? However it seemed to just stay at a constant speed I said it might be the HSN that won't let it go faster but after a few mess rounds the problem still exists.
Could it be the clutch shoes etc?

dave g 08-02-2010 08:51 AM

new plug you say..weird how that cured it :)

if the car is revving up but not going anywhere,it could be worn clutch shoes or a drivetrain problem somewhere.

make sure the flywheel is tight on the crank also.

apple_fanta 08-02-2010 11:09 AM

It does move but doesn't puck up speed. Like it will rev and move but when it's revving really high it doesn't puck up speed.
He said he's going to check it out tonight
thanks dave
