Long Time Ago
Hi All,
Just wanted to say hi. I going to pop over to the track tomorrow and have a look around. I'm hoping to get back into racing again, it's been over 10 years I reckon. I have a couple of Cat '98s that are nearly ready for action. Just need a speed controller, and to work out what radio gear to go for. Should I just stick with the old 27mhz gear or go for this fancy 2.4ghz stuff?? I believe there is a Cat '98 racing, so it'd be good to see it tomorrow if it's around. BFN, Stuart. |
why not stick with the 27mhz to start with? I doubt many other people will be using it to get crystal clashes etc....

I won't be running my Cat'98 but it will be there. I'll be running an even older RC10T!
Still I'm sure I can show you how to make an old car fly with todays tech. My Cat is just as quick indoors as my more modern D4. |

I brought the Cat and sat it on my table but nobody asked me about it!
Anyway - All you need to fly with the Cat is a nice brushless system and a set of Lipos. Don't go overboard and slap in some insane 4.5t monster system though - the old girls belts can't cope with that and the fronts are hard to source (Schumacher stock plenty of rears though). This works nicely. Its not really 540sized which means its not got the torque of other motors so is kinder in belts. Couple it with this esc and you have a reliable combo that won't strain the car. You can run the 35A version but i find that overheats in the Cat. Lipo wise what I did was just get one of these and make a brace to hold it where the saddles used to mount. Its lighter than saddles so some weights will be needed. The one pack is all you need - amazingly you'll not use more an 1500mAhs in a race and you don't need to discharge Lipos. Just hook them to the charger and peak them back up. You'll need a Lipo compatible charger. |

I take it you were going to put some links in your last post?? I did see a couple of Cat SXs and just thought 'I want one of those'. One lipo sounds good. I think I'll come along on the 26th with my old brushed setup, just so I can get to race and get some of the stuff you mentioned on order. Stuart. |

I've been working on my CATs, and I have one nearly ready for racing (if there is ever room that is ;-) ), but I'm missing some rear hub carrier spacers... Si, any idea what part number they would come under, or any thing that I could use in place of. I bought some M3 alloy spacers, but they didn't fit the pivot pins. I managed to get my hand on a Novak GTB ESC and a Velocity Motor. Gonna stick with my bunch of NiMHs for now, I have a few packs I've managed to recover from being in the loft with no charge. This new (or at least new to me) brushless tech is awesome. BNF, Stuart |
I'm sure mine look like plastic spacers so pretty much any suitable sized washers should do. Unfortunately I don't have the car at present so can't tell you the size. At a pinch I'd use a bit of nitro fuel tubing cut to size myself.
The manual doesn't give them a part number, but it looks like they come with the rear hub carriers which are out of stock. What Velocity have you got? I'm currently running the 5.5L (blue - very nice motor) in my D4, and have previously owned the 5.5R (purple - brutal) and the 4.5R which was insane and would kill your belts in seconds! |
Well, erm.. I could lie and say I have a 10.5R, but I haven't.
I have a Velocity 3.5R and an Orion 4.5R. They were cheap on ebay. I don't think the Novak Lights were out when I got them. I do like the sound of the 5.5L though, but I'll see how I get on with the ones I have. I've ran the 3.5R outside and it seemed fine, but there wasn't much traction. I was fast as hell though, which I liked. ;) I've seen some rear hub carriers on ebay, but it doesn't look like the spacers are included..... S. |
dude them motors will just cause you more problems than there worth,no one uses them in off road thats why they were cheap, 5.5 is the fastest the big boys go 6.5 or a 7.5 would be more than fast enough for raceing,all you will do is spend all day wondering why you cant get around the track,

What I'll do then is just try it with my 'outdoor' cat, indoors. I have assigned one for indoors, and one for outdoors, so at least if it does get destroyed in a blaze of glory, then I'll have my indoor one to be a bit more sensible. So, since bury is full at the moment, where can I go to at least get some practice. I've seen you guys mention a few other places (ashton, denton?). I'll post some pictures shortly of the cats shortly. S. |

Otherwise the current indoor haunts to check out are: Roundabout Raceway (Denton - see link Mondays but not next week) Stockport Model Car Club (Cheadle - see link Thursdays) Ribble Valley (Preston - see link Wednesdays) Roundabout is currently really slippery, but a good sized track. Its mostly attended by the Bury crew. Stockport is the size of a postage stamp and all hairpins. That said my Cat'98 kicks ass in there..... I've not been to Ribble myself so can't say. |

In fact, most of the time I beat you at Cheadle its because you try ramming me to overtake but the Cat sticks its claws in the carpet and its you who ends up on his roof! |
