What is the smoothest ESC for offroad?

I'm hoping that 2010 will be a much more RC packed year than 2009 and with that in mind I've been looking at my equipment trying to work out what to change for the better.

Currently I have a Sphere TC in the 4wd and a Nosram Matrix 07 in the 2wd.

I am not overly happy with the smoothness of either, even on the lowest settings they don't seem anywhere near as progresive as my old Nosram brushed speedos.

I am looking at backing down a couple of winds on the motors too (5.5 in 4wd, 6.5 in 2wd going to 7.5 / 8.5 respectively as that I think better equates to the 12/14 turn brushed motors I used to run).

What I would like to know is what speedos people are impressed by in terms of smoothness, especially from those people who have run several different brushless ESCs.

If anybody has any constructive comment regarding motor selection I'd like to hear those too.

What I am most interested in is smoothness and progresiveness as I am still very much struggling to adapt to the brushless set-ups I have.

SPEED PASSION!

bigred5765 26-10-2009 12:33 PM

speed passion again best we have run so far

Northy 26-10-2009 12:33 PM

Rog,

A lot has to do with the rotors in brushless motors IMHO. What motors/rotors are you using?

RogerM 26-10-2009 12:35 PM

I must say it was the Speed Passion range that had caught my eye!

Any more from anybody else?

RogerM 26-10-2009 12:37 PM

Northy, tried the following all with the supplied rotors

Novak R & L
Orion
Nosram & LRP (bonded and sintered)
Speed Passion (which seemed the smoothest to be honest but it was a mild wind @ 8.5)

All still seem a little too agressive which is why I was asking about speedos first....

Northy 26-10-2009 12:42 PM

Aggressive where? Bottom end? If so, a smaller rotor will smooth bottom end out, and increase top end - win win imho ;)

I'm running the SP GT2.0 LPF with their V3.0 5.5T motor and it seems to have loads of get up and go throughout the rev band and you can tootle along at 'pit lane speeds' (hehe) easily

GRIFF55 26-10-2009 01:07 PM

I'd say speed passion too rog, the 3.0 motor are super smoooooooooth. Easy to setup speedo's too!

bodgit 26-10-2009 01:14 PM

What batteries are you using? Lipo,s or nihm

RogerM 26-10-2009 01:22 PM

NiMh .. well over a season old too (but still going strong with good numbers on the Spintec).

Not even considering LiPo until I've got the speedo / motor issues sorted.

Interesting there have been no "anti" Speed Passion posts so far

Keep the info coming please guys.

SHY 26-10-2009 01:53 PM

One more for Speed Passion! I've tried pretty much everything...

The "programming card" is also a big bonus! Very quick & simple for setting up the ESC!

Smooth bottom end!

samd 26-10-2009 03:59 PM

The tekin RS pro has a current limit option to really turn down the power, and custom throttle profiles to smooth up the throttle response. The duel mode which switches from sensored to sensorless when the motor starts up also makes the drive smooth.
They are expensive new especially considering you need the hotwire as well, you could do to find someone selling a second hand one, with the pc linkup hotwire really - Like me - MUHAHAHAHA:lol:
(seriously PM me if interested!!)

sparrow.2 26-10-2009 04:23 PM

It really depends on the rotors you were using in your motors.

LRP/Nosram X11's came with 14mm out of the box, which always gave a lot of torque. The 12.5mm or the 13mm gave way better drivability.

I have Speedpassions as well and find them great with very fine response on the bottom end but was always able to find good settings with the Sphere/Matrix speedos when I still had them.

The handeld programmer is nice to use mind and if you're feeling like something new you could do a lot worse then the Speedpassion range.

Speed Passion is in the best you can get right now for sure

jcb 26-10-2009 06:13 PM

I'd have to say the Orion Vortex Race Spec, although the manual is rubbish and there are limited setups built into the ESC unless you have the ICS usb adapter.

mikeyscott 06-02-2011 09:59 PM

What are peoples thoughts 12 months on?

bigred5765 06-02-2011 10:12 PM

speed passion still

MiCk B. 06-02-2011 10:33 PM

The Novak Kinetic is good. Big improvement over the older Novaks.

The Nova-link software makes it really easy to tune the speedo and to save speedo setting for future use.

MiCk B. :-)

markwilliamson2001 06-02-2011 10:35 PM

Well it should be at £200 without the novalink!! LOL:woot:

Battle_axe 06-02-2011 10:51 PM

Still running my nosrams with losi 7.5 and 6.5 accordingly

RogerM 07-02-2011 08:32 AM

I have now gone to HobbyWing escs, they make the Speed Passion stuff. The software is slightly different between the two though and I am REALLY impressed with the HobbyWing ExRun V2.1 & 1S style units. What makes them even better is that they can be had for about £100 for a 120A unit!

See my sig for link.

RC944 07-02-2011 06:11 PM

happy with an old lrp sphere comp and lrp vector x100 10.5t motor for general bashing use

ianhaye 08-02-2011 07:23 AM

Another plus one for the tekin with me :-)

AmiSMB 08-02-2011 07:56 AM

I like the Hobbywing and have only had one failure when it was a bit wet but at the price just get another one and it is almost the same as the Speed Passion bar a few bits in the firmware. Would have been upset if it were a more expensive esc.

mes 10-02-2011 05:43 PM

I've run several ESCs in the last few years, SP GT 1.1 LPF, GT 2.0 LPF, Cirtix Stock Club Race; LRP SPX Zero and the Tekin RS.
While I think the SPs are great and the LRP is not bad either, I like the Tekin RS best. You can make simple adjustmenst without a handheld programmer, and when it comes to using a netbook, you don't have to connect a battery to the speedo. The small footprint is also a big plus for buggy applications. It is a bit more expensive than the others, but I think it's worth it.

fastinfastout 18-03-2011 03:40 PM

I have used quite a few speedies over the past 2 years, and they come out as;

1. GM90
2. Hobbywing v2.1
3. LRP sxx series
4. novak gtb
5. tekin rs/pro

bigchris 18-03-2011 04:56 PM

smoothest speedo

from me and my experience in terms of smoothness +1 for the tekin but the hobbywing units are only a smidge different ,

so for me its
tekin in touring car 10.5
speed passion in mod touring car
speed passion in 2wd
the old faithful lrp sphere tc in 4wd , bit aggressive low end but its 4wd after all

hth

faSTinfast out may i ask why have you put them in that order? i had the gm120 and was so much more complicated than the tekin im shocked to see that someone has put a rs at the bottom of the pile ?

I assume we all know that this thread was started 26/10/2009?

Doh...

colmo 18-03-2011 10:07 PM

The recent Speed Passion / Hobbywing firmware is very impressive - infinitely tuneable. You also know exactly what the changes do, instead of arbitrary numbers.

A general move to dial out torque would be dial in mechanical or electronic timing from 0 rpms.

quite simple, the title of the thread is, which is 'smoothest'

I'm sure some people wouldnt put the tekin last in regards to smoothnest, but then they would have probably not have used any other speed controls

Cooper 21-03-2011 10:31 AM

I'm told my Tekin has way to much power and no smoothness, How can I get it smoother? Don't wanna put cash into another speedo if I can just tune my tekin.

I think my RS is to much a BOOST TURBO touring ESC than a smooth 2wd offroad thingy.

motor SP9.5 with zippy's
also have SP V3 7.5 but it's too fast.

Thanks dudes and dudettes

Really? I find my RS Pros way smoother than my old Sphere and GTB were. Didn't tried others ESC though.

For more smoothness I would try :
- Dual mode
- Current limiting takes care of low-end punch. Even 5% is noticeable and you don't need a laptop to modify it
- smaller pinion or lower timing advance for less overall power
- less min throttle
- some expo on the throttle curve (transmitter or ESC)

Cooper 21-03-2011 11:19 AM

I started with this:

http://www.teamtekin.com/hotwire/ESC...-Mod-Setup.pdf

gonna eliminate every boost and whatsoever punch thingy from it.

Why should I go to dual mode?
Thanks!

Cooper 23-03-2011 01:27 PM

bump =)

Gayo 23-03-2011 02:52 PM

Oops! Sorry Cooper, didn't saw your reply.

Boost doesn't really add punch (if you mean low RPM torque), it allows the motor to take more RPM.

Re dual mode, I have found that the ESC behavior is smoother than in sensored mode.
