Windows 7

How many of you have take the leap to Windows 7?

I've got several copies at home awaiting install, but want to upgrade to an I7 rig first.

Just want Microsoft to get SCCM Service Pack 2 release so I can start planning deployment of Windows 7 at work.

Marvin 23-10-2009 08:27 AM

I've got it! I'm just awaiting some bits (new motherboard etc) to turn up before I install (as I'm not sure how Windows will react to a motherboard change).

Anyone used Micro-Direct before?

Balders 23-10-2009 08:41 AM

Been running the pre release and the full version for a while now. Company I work for is a premier MS customer so we've had the full version for a month or so.

I can't stress how much of an improvement it is over Vista, its fast, stable and easy to use. I've had it running on an old desktop P4 3gig with 2 gig of ram and in the last 2 months I've only rebooted it to install updates. The install picked up all the drivers and devices attached to the box without question and only took about half an hour.

Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.

I'm yet to add a machine to our domain in work though, mainly because we are running AD 2003 and until we get around to updating our DC's to 2008 I've not seen the point especially as I work for a bank so we are Group Policy crazy.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has added Win7 to a domain running GP and if you had any issues..

In case I'd not put it accross I am a big fan, huge improvement!

Mike

Is it very different to vista? I'm thinking of upgrading my mums laptop to it as it's so slow with vista on. She's not into computers and only uses her laptop to surf the net and it took her a while just to understand how to get IE running so I don't want to change it if the interface has changed very much.

I'm not sure of the spec of the laptop but I think it's got a gig of ram and a celeron processor. and she's running basic vista at the moment.

mikeyscott 23-10-2009 09:06 AM

Got Win 7 on the domain with no issues and I've done the Schema update to the AD for 2008. First 2008 R2 DC has gone in. Just need to do the others 2 full 2008 and 2 core 2008

MatJohnson 23-10-2009 09:27 AM

Marvin, i've used them loads before.

AmiSMB 23-10-2009 09:53 AM

No problems so far with Windows 7 on Windows R2 2003 or Windows R2 2008 servers that we have out in the field. Windows 7 so far is so much better than Vista and I think it is less complicated for the end user.

My laptop is a lot more powerful than that, and as soon as I got it I replaced Vista with XP. No point comparing windows7 with Vista - people should be comparing it with the other main OS out there which is XP.

Cool, I need to look into the GPO side of things

poopers 23-10-2009 10:18 AM

My copy arrived this morning; hurrah local postie is not on strike.

Going be a few days before I upgrade though, got incompatible software that needs replacing.

Marvin, it’s not a motherboard for an intel i5 or i7 cpu your getting is it?

Danosborne6661 23-10-2009 10:27 AM

Windows 7 is actually stunning, any one would be silly not to upgrade to it.
Been using it for a few months now (Tech-net account) and it is aweeesome.

As well as my desktop I'm running it on my 8" Netbook and even this flys through it without any issues :)
It's bench marking to run as fast as XP was yet it has features better than Vista, WINWIN

GO BUY PEOPLE :D

DCM 23-10-2009 10:28 AM

I Got Vista and 7 running, and although I am not overly excited by 7, if it sits lighter on the system, I will be happy, as Vista is a hog. I don't have an issue with Vista, really, just it is bloated, 7 seems to skip along happily, some things work better, although I got to work out how to get the 'classic control panel' back.

With upgrading hardware, if you got a retail version of Windows, it may just need re-activiating, if you got OEM, you may need to give MS UK a call, to get it re-activated.

Marvin 23-10-2009 10:31 AM

Good to see some people have used Micro-Direct before (with hopefully positive results). Now I just need the stuff to turn up, should have picked the 'before 10:30' delivery option.

Unfortunately I'm not getting an i5 or i7 motherboard - I just don't have that kind of cash. I'm still on LGA775 with the Core 2 Duos.

DCM 23-10-2009 10:33 AM

I got 7 running on an AMD machine, with an 18 month old processor and 1gig, and it works well. Only real gripe I have, is it is slow to log onto my WiFi, and sometimes, I have to disconnect and reconnect to make it work

poopers 23-10-2009 10:58 AM

Lucky escape Marvin.

If anyone's building a new intel i5 or i7 computer and doesn't know about the foxconn cpu socket issue feel free to pm me for an explaination of what to do.

Sorry for the hijack

Did you have a windows 7 party? :woot::cool::lol:

Looks a great spec system Mikey, going for the 860 myself, though I’m not too info’d up on msi mobos. Take it you’ll be doing a test install of the cpu to check the motherboard pins make proper contact with the cpu? (there's no nerd smilies )

Yeah, I'm holding off until the cpu socket issue is properly dealt with and solid state drives have come down in price a bit more, by then usb 3 might be out too. I don't upgrade very regularly so it's worth the wait.

Big G 23-10-2009 12:09 PM

It seems a bit expensive to get though. how much are you paying?

Vaild point. I've put the list together, but haven't ordered anything yet.

I'm watching the exchange rate as that'll help RAM prices come down if the UK>Dollar rate improves.

What's expensive? Windows 7?

Big G 23-10-2009 12:15 PM

yeah. the cheapest version PC world do is £65

DCM 23-10-2009 01:24 PM

thats only an upgrade, so you have to have XP or Vista first, and installed. If you are building a system, you can buy an OEM version for about the same price.

Marvin 23-10-2009 09:32 PM

Well, I finished my new motherboard install - my Dell Inspiron 545 was stripped of the processor, the DVD drives, the HDD, the power supply and my graphics card. Now installed on a ASRock P45XE motherboard in a NZXT M59 case. I was surprised that my Dell OEM Vista OS actually booted without trouble, and when I typed in the activation key, it worked fine, even with a different motherboard. Installed Windows 7, and now just doing all the driver updates and such.

Specs:
Case: NZXT M59
Motherboard: ASRock P45XE
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Graphics Card: Powercolor HD4890 PCS+
PSU: Antec Basiq 550W+
CPU Cooler: Artic Cooling Freezer Pro

It's all going swimmingly so far, and I do like 7. Don't like IE8 though - it seems to 'split' when you scroll up and down. Just set Firefox back to my main browser - lovely!

I got the Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade with the student discount scheme, so got it for £30!

poopers 23-10-2009 10:35 PM

Excellent news  trust you're gonna have a wild and crazy Windows 7 launch party like these guys:

;):cool::lol:

Southwell 24-10-2009 07:35 PM

Ive been running it for ages at home. We are rolling it out to the IT department at work over the next couple of months but a few of us have been using it for a month or two with very few issues. We run APP V too, which is fantastic.

Im running 64bit Win 7 at home on my test 'server' (PC), it handles VM Ware server and 5 VM's without even breaking a sweat, love it. :woot:

Don't hesitate to upgrade, it's in a different league to Vista.

ashleyb4 27-10-2009 01:10 AM

Ive found the best function of windows 7 yet this evening thats windows button and tab....

A

MatJohnson 27-10-2009 08:52 AM

Ash, is that the carosell thingy? That was in vista. Check out the shack function (click a windows blue bar and shake it, the other windows drop down) and the snap function is about the only change I can find from vista.

c0sie 27-10-2009 09:44 AM

Snap function??

I have the student upgrade. Dont like that I cannot delete the Home Groups icon from the desktop. Dont like that I have to move all my stuff into the Library if I want to pin it to the taskbar (shortcut from my D: drive only pins to Windows explorer).

Otherwise, for a laptop user that just likes to surf the net, W7 is alright

ashleyb4 27-10-2009 10:28 AM

Yea matt the carocell thing havent got a clue how to do the snap thing though.

A

MatJohnson 27-10-2009 10:52 AM

Half your it window and offer it upto the top right of the screen and let go of the mouse, you can then snap another window next too it on the other side, so you can get 2 x naked ladies on one monitor :)
