Cheap fun RWD road car
I'm looking for a 2nd car and as I think I'm starting a mid life crisis I'm only interested in a RWD fun machine :lol:
Must be: Cheap to buy Cheap to run Have more than 2 seat - Mia might want to go in it sometimes Have a roof Are there any forgotten gems out there? :woot: Cheers, G |
Hmmm there's got to be a few options such as:
Nissan 200 SX Nissan 300 ZX BMW E30 or E36 or even E39 5 Series? Old style Supra Mazda RX7 - Not cheap to run mind..... E36 325i would probably be the best bet, nice and cheap, reliable and still fun! |
Porsche 924/944  (924 better looking, cheaper to run, 944 more Porsche-like power)
- Great handling from 50/50 weight distribution (engine angled back, rear gearbox) - Proper sports car feel (sit low in centre of car) - Dirt cheap classic insurance - More power than grip - Traffic always let's it by when they see it in mirror - Knightrider stylee pop-up lights |
How about a volvo 340 16v haha proper drift machine my mates got one and it crazy!!

I could see you in a capri, G

That would be cool!! paint it in the starsky and hutch colours too!!:thumbsup:

Depends on budget but loads of older great RWD's out there... another vote for the Porsche 944 range ( S2 the best all rounder ) and the E30 325i, but prices arent as cheap as they used to be for a good one, and to run them on a budget you need to be able to work on them yourself.
Or for a £1000 budget for pure, simple RWD fun ( only 2 seats mind, but cheap, distinctive and very mechanically reliable ) the Toyota MK1 MR2. I did 80k in my old one, only thing that ever let me down on it in 10 years were the alternators, which seem to die quite quickly. Still got it in my back yard under a tarp, i just couldnt bear to part with it was so good  Buy a good one of these and you will have more fun than should be allowed for so little money  |

Cheers Jim, thanks for the service venue:thumbsup:
Mark is still very sore in the rib area and my shoulder aches a bit but really lucky in the circumstances. He is also talking about re-building it now so that's a positive:thumbsup: I have another sugestion for Northy but just can't find the picture........ |

What happened to the yellow beast G?
|
S2000?
Fto? old BMW M3? |
I'd 2nd the Honda S2000.
E46 M3s are cheap these days |

E46 M3 Cheap?? Depends what you call cheap really but i doubt £12k is "cheap" - Plus running and servicing etc....... I get the impression from G he's talking about more of a run-around that can be abused.... £1000-2000 maybe?? |

Agreed, a run around it is, keep the miles of the 'expensive to mend' car a bit, and have a bit of fun in the process.
Something really cheap would be good, 3rd part insurance only, if I put it in a ditch I just leave it and walk home :lol::lol::lol: HAS to be more than 2 seats - The Mrs says so. I've still got the yellow beast, but it's no fun in the rain :( G |
Northy, you'll need to look at a 2.8i Capri. You'll have fun and you'll fit your racing gear in it as well

Now this is my kinda thread. I've had 2 200sx s13's, not bad, but rear seats might as well not be there. Plus unless you rag the rpm they are gutless. If you get a rice burner thats been tweaked it will blow up. Guaranteed. Look cool though and lot of car for the money.
Old school supra's are ace, but handling leaves a lot to desire. I had a 2nd gen 2.8 celica-supra (and Cougar-rob on here still has one ) which was waaaaaay more fun than the 3.0 non turbo 3rd gen, and the 3.0 turbo 3rd gen (again I had one of each). The 3rd gens are mainly auto in turbo variety (wank) and they were actually designed to be grand sports tourers so handling is awful. The 2.8 celica-supra is much more fun, and there aren't many on the road. Plus all manuals. Added bonus they look like Kitt from knigh rider from the front! The 2 I would go for are either a rev 2 MR2 sw20 (but its 2 seater), or Vauxhall Carlton GSI. Now don't laugh...... the Carlton may be an ugly beast, but they are cheap, 200bhp, no computer-aided traction control b******s, awesome handling and a right laugh. I had one a few years back, paid ?1500 for it, it never broke, and was one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. 4 doors and plenty of space, and the damn thing goes sideways everywhere. Lotue Carlton looks (if you paint it green) for ford escort money :woot: Or you could always get a E36 328...... saw one go through auction last year for ?800 :woot: alot of car for the monies! Nice-ish ones are in the trader for 1500-2000 regularly. That's my two-penneth. ________ AVANDIA SETTLEMENTS |
Another vote for an old school Supra here :)
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...972&logcode=p# One of the lads at work has one just like that I think he's looking to sell, needs a new steering rack I think though (job for Jim ) so it'll probably be cheaper than the one above. |
Alfa 75 3.0 V6, if you can find one. Getting on a bit now and they are well dated inside, but the engines are great and they handle very well....
There's one on Pistonheads but a Twinspark version, looks nice apart from the buttock wearage on the seat! http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1289585.htm |

hilman imp, seen one of these drift round the outside of a ferrari 355 at old hall coner at oulton park-twit in ferrari wasnt impressed!!
opel manta, cheap to find-run-insure. moggie minor, drop in a kad head 1380cc block and pistons. toyota starlet, rwd drifter on the cheap! ford anglia,mk2 escort on the cheap. |
I'd happily own any of the following for a bit of fun!
Opel Kadett Opel Ascona Fiat 131 200SX Maxda RX7 Lada Riva Reliant Kitten Volvo 340 Triumph TR7 Alfa Sud - These have probably rusted away by now though? Corolla AE86 Toyota Starlet Talbot Sunbeam Sierra? How cheap are we talking? Mk2 Escort - Will probably have to be 4 door to keep the budget down. BMW E30 325 C Class Mercedes Lexus IS200 |
Cant believe no ones mentioned a mitisbushi starion, they where a right car in there day.
|
MR2 gts turbo rev3 pick one up cheap. my lads just got one 0-60 5.8 secs
240-260bhp 150mph |
Alfasuds were front wheel drive :p
my first 3 cars were suds. well, untill they rusted away  |

What do people think to MX-3's?
G |
An old Beemer 3 series, or go for a rough round the edges Sierra and fix it up/modify it, parts are cheap and easy to come by.

Fiat 126 bis. I once swapped a large doner kebab with cheese and garlic mayo for one, best swap I ever did. We took it to Bovington Cruise in 2002 and entered the burnout competition in it. We had to wedge it against a fence post to get it to do a burnout, but once we did that was it. We actually had 8 pics of us in Fast Car magazine that month.
Engine is in the boot, chain drive. If you were a complete nutter you could chuck a blackbird/busa engine in it, god that would be fun. ________ SUZUKI RAIDER 150 |

aren't they 2 seater's |

No that's the MX-5. The MX-3 is the longer coupe version with a roof. Still a bit gay though.
________ Yamaha Raptor 700R History |
Mx-3 is Front wheel drive to.
