Durango's gear box for b44!

Spoolio 08-10-2009 06:35 AM

Oops, wrong thread, post moved.

sosidge 08-10-2009 07:39 AM

And how was this acheived? What parts modded? As the Durango is metric and the B44 imperial.

Gayo 08-10-2009 08:52 AM

I'm also really interested in that mod

gear diff + metal gears = winner :woot:

Big G 08-10-2009 09:10 AM

The diff housings look very similar between the 2 cars. I would assume if it bolts to the car you could just swap the smaller cog on the CVA and pop the diff in there.

Metric/imperial doesn't really play much part in this. If you end up with 10 metric screws on your B44 it's not much of a problem.

TNT 08-10-2009 12:02 PM

The motor (V12--5.5) and ESC 120A.

After 4 weekend’s test in thetrack, the performance is Champion. No power lost. Gear noiseless. No problem.!!!!!:thumbsup:
The diff house of the Durango can be fit in my b44 gear box.
But the ball bearing is too small to fit in with the house(b44), and hard to fine the bearing here. So, I made a Alloy shim to fit the ball bearing to set in the diff house.

The small gear is from Durango also and which need to be cut and drilled a hole to fit cross pin (B44). That it’s.

Gayo 08-10-2009 01:27 PM

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
Many thanks! I have found my winter project.

Cheers!

Olivier, while you're at it - can I order those custom parts from you? Please!

Gayo 07-12-2009 09:20 AM

Shhh, don't disturb The Brain, he is actually making my parts :p

The only tricky thing is to mount Durango shaft pinions on B44 center shafts. You need a lathe and some skills for sure (thanks Oliv! :wub).

Otherwise, Durango diffs drop into B44 housings without any problems, they are of same dimensions as the AE stuff.

You need:
- 2 TD210001 (gear diff)
- 2 TD310005 (pinion)
- 2 ASC1731 (AE HD one-way bearings, as the Durango is metric)
- Some diff oil

Maybe also:
- 2 TD310022 (driveshaft boots )
- 1 TD310039 (rings holding the boots)

So that's around €150, without the lathe job. Ouch!
Hopefully I will have them for my next race on sunday. I will report how it feels here.

Good to see you back on the OR 10th scene.

Lee Martin 07-12-2009 10:08 AM

need to clean the poor B44!!!

SHY 07-12-2009 10:11 AM

Back? I'm captured inside the "Diaper Nightmare 1"

One-way bearings? No front gear diff?

jimmy 07-12-2009 10:21 AM

I think he means the bearings that support the oneway front diff, not the oneway bearings themselves. The oneway diff is metric - and comes with metric bearings with alloy collars to make them upto the size of the imperial diff bearings so it fits nicely inside the housings.

Oh, OK I understand now why you were so quiet since a few monthes
I have seen Diaper Nightmare 1 and 2, that's enough for me.

No. The HD one-way, made by Yokomo for their TC cars, is metric. AE uses special ball bearings in order to use it on AE cars. You can use the same bearings to fit Durango diffs on AE housings.
Hope I'm clear :woot:

Edit - Jimmy said it better and faster than me

SHY 07-12-2009 10:46 AM

Aha! That's great! So the only mod needed is on the center shafts then.

Olivier, post some pics of the process please!

So you don't need to use a lathe to do this? Just dremel off some material from the gear and drill a hole for the cross pin?

Oliv996 08-12-2009 12:13 PM

Hi SHY!

Doing this job with a Dremel will be your second nightmare

The Durango pinion and B44 drive shaft are made in hard steel material...

I will post some pics very soon ;)

Oliv'

SHY 08-12-2009 12:29 PM

Hey BigBrains!

The Dremel can cut through anything - like a warm knife through butter!

Don't tell me you don't have the Dremel Disease anymore??? :D

Oliv996 09-12-2009 08:59 AM

SHY, here are the mods you have to do with your Dremel

The drive shaft shortened:

The pinion drilled and with the pin hole:

Once assembled in the B44 diff case:

KinWild 09-12-2009 09:17 AM

Nice job, but with that mod that B44 becomes ther truly luxury 4wd in terms of €

SHY 09-12-2009 09:24 AM

OK... I admit being SLIGHTLY over optimistic on that one...

Did you make an extra set for me? Yo tengo dinero... ;)

Gayo 10-12-2009 06:03 PM

No, you have to buy two of these to have two pinions

Sorry for being so slow... but isn't it enough with 1 front and 1 rear?

(both goes to the centre shafts)

Don't they come in a pack of 2? (#TD310005)

LOL!!! I obviously need glasses! :D:D:D

I'm soon 40... things are going the wrong way...

A pic of 1 would be better for dummies though

Cheers guys

mark christopher 10-12-2009 07:31 PM

im over 40 and struggle lol, does it a few times on the durango site, shows 2 and says 1

X5 Addict 20-12-2009 09:35 AM

So after all this what is the result with performance?? BTW nice job!

Gayo 22-12-2009 10:11 AM

Well I had an indoor race last week end on carpet and slippy gym hall floor. Olivier gave me the modified bits on the morning so I could mount them between two rounds. Hey I have the best mate!

I filled them with 10K front and 3K rear. I thought that diff action would be quite slowed with such thick oils, but no, they felt like a slightly tight ball diff on front and a newly-built smooth ceramic ball diff on rear.

You can still feel the hydraulic effect of oil by blipping the throttle while holding one wheel. To me (this is quite subjective though) the held wheel tries to spin harder than it would do with a ball diff.

On track, the tranny felt just fine, but that's a testimony to Olivier's awesome lathe skills. The car was very smooth and not louder by any means. I think that the louder pitch noise from Dex410s comes from the alloy chassis. Traction was very good. The car had a little to much rotation on tight corners, next time I will try with 15K-20K on front.

Is it hard to say if I was quicker with those mods as the race was on a temporary track. My home track is covered by snow by now  so I will have to wait until I can do more tests, but it feels good to know that I can tune diffs as much as I want, from a super-free spinning diff to an almost locked traction machine :woot: And I can use driveshaft boots, yummy!

SHY 22-12-2009 10:33 AM

What brand of oil do you use?

Do you still use the Mid44 chassis? Pics?

Gayo 22-12-2009 11:01 AM

I used AE oils, but I have some Losi bottles too. I don't know if they have vastly diffreent thicknesses, but it should be close enough for me.
I will post pics later.

Since I use lipos, I run a standard B44, with Losi shocks and now Durango diffs (obviously!).

I am thinking about coming back to the MiD44 '08 chassis though, with brass weights under lipos. That car was really good, easy to drive, quite fast and rather unique.

SHY 22-12-2009 11:07 AM

Thx!

Why not go for an Atomized B44? AFAIK it' the same weight distribution as the MiD44?

And even cooler dude!

Gayo 22-12-2009 11:26 AM

I think that the motor is even more on the front on the Atomized?

Cool car for sure but I'm afraid I don't have fossil fuel under my garden :lol:

SHY 22-12-2009 12:12 PM

As on the MiD the middle shafts have swapped positions, so it should be the same I think...

And that carbon tub is übersexy!!!

Gayo 22-12-2009 09:38 PM

Yeah but the slipper is also reversed on the Atomized B44... Come on SHY... you should know that, you have both cars...

pizzaman 14-03-2010 09:45 PM

hi all, very intrested in this mod how is testing going with these?
also would it be possible for some one to put a complete list of parts that are needed for the mod please
cheers

The mod works really well, I find my B44 easier to drive, less twitchy on the slippery stuff as well as on carpet, and I even have better traction.

I put a list of parts used on post #11. OK, here it is :D :
