joelwhite 05-10-2009 03:08 PM

I read there were only 50 entries

bigred5765 05-10-2009 03:16 PM

24 drivers listed on the reg drivers list ,o dear

poopers 05-10-2009 03:36 PM

I’ve been trying to follow this event and can’t find too much info or reporting. Is it true manufacturers, drivers, magazines etc. are boycotting this event for some reason? Or is it just a poor showing because of economic conditions / the rumoured difficulties of the location?

David Church 05-10-2009 04:11 PM

It is a shame this event has very few drivers. I really enjoyed Japan 07.

I do think it is mainly down to the location, and of course having very little money doesnt help.
I am not saying South Africa isn't a safe place, or even that it's a bad place, but for some reason people think they MAY not be safe, and for most of us that do this as a hobby this may have been too much.

This post is not a dig at SA, just the way I see things;)

DCM 05-10-2009 04:38 PM

they just had the 1/5th onroad worlds there, and that only attracted 7 drivers in total...

Wow, gotta feel sorry for the organisers / local club with such a poor turn out.

Nige 05-10-2009 05:29 PM

Are there any rules+regs. that state the minimum number of entries for the event to be classified as a worlds? And can the winner really be considered a world champion; I feel sorry for whoever it is as the low turnout devalues the title somewhat?

Damn, I should've bought a plane ticket, as maybe even I had a chance this year

they were all locals...

its was basically a club race to crown the IFMAR world champion

Neil Skull 05-10-2009 09:21 PM

It Is a big mistake by the IFMAR to race in south Africa.
Safety is a problem but also the political situation means it is highly controversial to attend.

However it is a chance for a brave club racer to make a name for himself. After all even if only 7 drivers turned up for the 1/5th worlds there was still a world champ.

I would not go and personally i am very disappointed that the best drivers aren't going i really had high hopes for Tebo making a name for himself!!!

I think thats the idea with some of the big teams sending a single driver - to devalue the race. Others don't want to attend because these big teams already devalued the results - and so on.

Good luck to whomever wins! We have money on Martin Achter to give Durango a good showing in 4WD

Welshy40 05-10-2009 09:55 PM

IFMAR need to get rid of the idiot that thought this up. How can you call it a words when people are afraid of going there. Lets hope its not USA or Japan next time.

_JP_ 05-10-2009 10:57 PM

Oh to be fair I didn't think that many raced 1/5th anyway LOL :p

showtime 06-10-2009 04:04 AM

well i'm looking forward to the Afghanistan Worlds next time

Smartalec 06-10-2009 06:13 AM

A track in the middle of Helmand Province with a rostrum big enough to take 20 people (a bodyguard for each driver) and bullet proof glass at the front LOL

Lee 06-10-2009 10:34 AM

I'm meant to be going to Joburg next month for 5 weeks with work, i can't see that happening though, it clashes with a weekend on the lash in london

Seriously though i went over for 3 days last week for a meeting and the taxi driver shat his pants when the lights turned red

Not really the place i would want to be carrying around expensive equipment

I also agree that if one big team ie AE decide not to go then it has a knock on effect, as why would other teams justify the expense if the "best" drivers in the world are not turning up? You can't say you have the best product if your the only one there.

For me the teams/competitiors have made the correct decision ;)

Found some info about the worlds from an Australian who seems to be setting the pace...

Gonky 06-10-2009 11:39 AM

Yeah, info/results don't seem to be that readily available... not compared to the euro's anyway!

Well at the Euros in England this year there was about 80 drivers.

Northy 06-10-2009 04:14 PM

There are only 16 drivers competing at the 10th Worlds

MattW 06-10-2009 05:25 PM

Looks like they are at least practicing on LiPo.

bondy 06-10-2009 06:08 PM

marshals ?

Bet the organizers didnt think they would have to help out with the marshaling LOL LOLOLO:thumbsup:

woOdy 06-10-2009 06:14 PM

I think I have been sleeping? Where is everybody? UK boys.

sparrow.2 06-10-2009 06:16 PM

It's a bit of a shame really. Looks like the guys down there went to quite some trouble to provide a nice looking track and rostrum.

Even more sad when you know south african hospitality...

That said I've been to Pretoria and wouldn't want to really spend more time there than whatever time it takes to drive through as fast as I could :eh?:

fabolousRC 06-10-2009 09:48 PM

Gee...I was thinking of going there as an independent entry and with this such a low list of drivers, I could've placed at least in the Top 20 yea?:lol::lol:

sparrow.2 07-10-2009 09:24 AM

http://www.sarda.org.za/livestream.asp

chokoboy 07-10-2009 09:34 AM

What happend to the japanese drivers who was registrated, did they cancel?

sparrow.2 07-10-2009 09:52 AM

They got stuck taking pictures of each other in front of things...

bondy 07-10-2009 12:20 PM

max 50

maximum 50 viewers for the webstream ???

more people watching than competing !

Eimer 07-10-2009 12:44 PM

Martin Achter strikes back in A2 with the win. Craig Laughten who wins the A1 came in 3rd i think! Martins run was faster than Craigs, so he had the lead now!

cheers

Eimer 07-10-2009 01:51 PM

Martin Achter wins A3 and is new IFMAR EP Champion. Is he the 1st from Germany? 2nd Craig Laughten from Australia!

cheers
