Beginner's Guide to 1/8 Brushless Conversions, as written by me!

I've written a beginner's guide to 1/8 brushless conversions, hosted by Scribd. If anyone has any constructive criticism, please feel free to post.

I hope this helps many people make the transition to 1/8 Brushless...

There's no picture's I got lost when I couldn't find the low speed needle :p:woot::woot:

Good Read Simon, well done.

That's better!

The problem is, there is a 500KB limit on Word documents on Scribd, so pictures are a non-starter. The pictures aren't really needed, but I'll agree, would make it look better.

Very good read very helpfull to someone starting out or thinking of converting. I could have done with this a couple of weeks ago :)

BWT do you know where you can buy Losi EC5 connectors in the UK? Cant find any anywhere..

Marvin 24-08-2009 02:25 PM

Horizon are out of stock at the moment, so supplies are going to be wearing thin. Look for E-Flite EC5 connectors, you may find them in Heli and Plane stores, and they are the same, both companies are just brands under Horizon in the US.

Great work Marvin but just a couple of things:-

  1. The Tekin Warranty is 120days not 90 as stated.
  2. Hyperion cells are now coming in better sizes from www.robotbirds.co.uk
  3. You could include RC Tech forum under general information
Again fantastic work this is going to help alot of people. I am making sure that this gets linked to from the Clanfield website. Hopefully one day we will be at the same track and put our electrics up against each other :)

Yes, you're right about the warranty - just checked my RX8's manual to be sure.
I didn't know anyone had them in the UK, thanks for the info.
I've never visited RC-Tech, and never got any of my information from them, it seems (from RC-Monster), that the info on there can be a bit hit and miss, so it might not be the best idea to guide beginners there.

I hope we don't race each other as I'm not that great! Also, I only really race at one club, I can't be arsed to get up early enough to go to Clanfield, and now that Dartford is gone, I can't go there either.

EDIT: I've now updated 'the guide'.

Nice job, great to see a review of the main stuff in one place.

No mention of Novak? I've been running one in trucks for a couple of years, enough power and control for mid air back flips in my E-Revo.

I've not tried it in a buggy yet, but given it can move my trucks round okay I would have thought it would be pretty good in a buggy.

Being in Maidstone I would expect you go to Kent. I have not raced their yet but one day I will.

Oh yeah, I did forget Novak. They are a little behind on the times now, and don't really produce a suitable motor for 1/8 buggy or truggy. The minimum kV available is 3000kV, which is 3S only for buggy and truggy use (see chart in guide). Not only that, the rotors are smaller than on many of the other '1/8' motors, so it doesn't give much torque for racing, which really is what you need. They are good for speed runs and general bashing though.

Ami-SMB, I do race at KMRC/Kent yes, still the only electric there though...

Having said that however, quite a few people are interested in doing them now, and my uncle has now got a brushless truggy too. So that's two at Kent now! Only (lots) more and we can have our own class!

Updated with my latest research, product findings, and I've also enlarged the battery section to include some of the other big brands.

Marvin 26-10-2009 11:13 PM

Updated. Have now included LRP, Novak and Mtroniks, and corrected a couple of little errors in the battery list.

Solved!

hockeyhead019 27-10-2009 03:30 AM

this is an amazing guide... well put together

-Jim

Marvin 27-10-2009 08:44 PM

Thank you :D.

mark79 27-10-2009 09:55 PM

Yep, good guide.

Helped answer a lot of queries i had with building up a leccy 1/8th. Any future reviews planned for the LRP sx8 system? :woot:

Marvin 27-10-2009 10:53 PM

If someone wants to send one to me then sure!

I have just updated it with some LRP stuff in the ESC/Motor sections.

Marvin 04-11-2009 08:50 PM

Updated - added Slipperential, and a few notes. Expanded the 'choosing a kV' section.

Soon I will write a guide on all the 'pre-converted' cars out there with good and bad points, and plenty of info on each.

hockeyhead019 13-11-2009 02:10 PM

umm does this link not work for anybody else? or does the internet just hate me personally haha

-Jim

Marvin 13-11-2009 02:58 PM

Er, still working for me...

Is your internet connection giving you trouble?

Jan Larsen 13-11-2009 02:58 PM

Link works just fine here.

hockeyhead019 13-11-2009 07:47 PM

hmmm... i guess the internet does hate me haha it'll probably work in another browser as the one i use is still in development haha :)

Marvin 13-11-2009 10:11 PM

That may explain it then...:p

hockeyhead019 14-11-2009 10:39 PM

yea thats all it was haha

dodgydiy 20-11-2009 12:13 AM

which hyperion cells are you using marvin, vx, cx, lvx???

Marvin 20-11-2009 12:19 AM

The new ones are the CX and VX series.

I have used both with success, but especially recommend the VX cells.

Yes, looks like it has been deleted. I think the documents are removed if they are not read etc. Shame as it was a handy document.

This was one of the many usefull links in the document (only one I can remember).

Try sending Marvin a PM, although he has not posted for a number of months.
