Idler Gear Size

As my car currently sounds like a jet fighter I thought I would put everyone out there misery and order a new Idler Gear and Layshaft gear for my SX.

Does anyone know what the standard size is for both ???

Sorry i`m at work just about to place an order and the car is at home.

Cheers Brett

33 Tooth upper U3346 and 23 Tooth layshaft gear U3343
All of the top of my head. ;)

I haven't heard that since 1st year primary school :lol::lol:

Are the gears supposed to be lubed. I'm on my third set, and want to increase the life of them (tricky when running 5.5).

stefke 07-08-2009 11:43 AM

I ran through my first set of gears in 2 races.

After that, I lubed them with some high speed grease and now they seem to last forever.

stegger 07-08-2009 12:38 PM

Mine are dry and have been since the car has been out, no problems at all. Have your cars got the covers on and the slipper cover ?

geerno 07-08-2009 01:02 PM

My idler gears have the cover over. But I am guessing other people may not race as much as I do. Every weekend, I am racing, and with a 5.5.

I am on my 4th front belt in 6 months. That gives you an idea.

I like the sound of the high speed grease. Let me know more... brand etc.

I wasn't the only one experiencing rapid gear wear, but a little bit of grease solved the problem completely.

I doubt you'll find the brand I use in the UK (Protech High speed grease)

It's red coloured and very sticky. I bought it a long time ago to lube the gears on my 200mm NTC3 nitro TC (yes, I've turned to the dark side years ago but have seen the light now :D).

geerno 08-08-2009 03:18 AM

Yes, the dark side. Better to be electric and muddy

Thanks for the info, I will check it out, see if I can find an equivalent.

discostu 08-08-2009 08:55 AM

you could use the tamiya anti wear greese its simular to the red sticky stuff.

Thinking about it geerno are you racing on dirt tracks in australia ? that stuff gets everywhere so if you are going to use grease of some kind it may attract it more.

bender 08-08-2009 12:36 PM

Use Tamiya ceramic grease - it's the best stuff for these gears.

I run on dusty tracks every week and my gears still look like new

Yeah, running on dirt tracks, one dusty and one less so. I can't see any dirt in the idler case, so should be alright as Bender said.

My gears are presently lasting about 8 race meets. So it's not as bad as others, like stefke, that is intense 2 races!

Racing a lot on astro is a true drivetrain killer. and it's not that they were broken. They were razor-sharp and noisy and I didn't like that.

DCM 10-08-2009 10:46 AM

Sounds like there is the wrong material choice, and hardenning procedure going on, also, the gears should also be teflon coated too, to aid gear meshing.

As for belts, they should, in theory, last for ages, unless there is debris caught, or too high a belt tension to stop belt skipping on small idler pulleys.

geerno 10-08-2009 10:25 PM

I have chewed through more front belts then idler gears. I'm on my 5th front belt, 4th mid belt and still running my original rear belt.

I guessed this just comes with regular racing. Would love to hear any tips on keeping belts alive a bit longer.

DCM 10-08-2009 10:33 PM

do the belts snap, or just wear out, or lose teeth?

geerno 10-08-2009 11:30 PM

They fray on the sides after a few meets then snap, or on one occasion just became super stretchy at one point and unusable.

MattADH 12-08-2009 08:36 AM

I think that the edges fray from running against the guides on the pulleys.

I have only changed my gears once since running the car and it makes it a lot quieter. I also noticed that the gear wear is tapered toards the inside. I dont run any lube and change both the metal and plastic gears at the same time.

I don't think that's a good idea. Tamiya anti wear grease isn't designed for high rpm applications but more for slow moving, high load applications (a bit like copper grease in full scale cars).

discostu 12-08-2009 04:47 PM

no so my 3.5t in my 416 with a lipo isn't high rpm not designed for fast moving parts!!

clintscreations 12-08-2009 11:15 PM

My last set of gears lasted about 14 minutes worth of run time......set before lasted about 20 minutes worth of racing

Could be the heat that tranfers from motor to the aluminum gear that wears the plastic gear
