here is my setup from doing the review. Indoor carpet / polished floor - but this is what I would use outdoors to start with and tune from there.
This is what I ended up on and is mostly taken from my BJ4we setup with help from Stuart Wood (on the bj4we initially, and then on the 501X).

As done for some others cars, I post this!

Blank Sheet & Setup TRF 501X

Right now, this document is rather poor but, as the car is new, can bet some good hope to increase the documents available!

Also Jimmy, if not appropriate, just remove it!!

Edit 14/03/2007 - Some documents added specially a setup in the Yatabe Arena, maybe useful for outdoor race

jimmy 13-03-2007 09:06 PM

Here is the setup sheet of Cédric Devillers - who took the TQ at the first French national with the 501X!

Thanks for your help Cédric.

Astroturf set up

Hello Anybody who has got good Set up for an astroturf track?

setups

Hi all,

I too could do with an astroturf setup, and a grass setup?

Cheers,

Dave

jimmy 17-04-2007 10:11 PM

The setup I used for York Indoors I would start with outdoors and tune to the particular conditions. This might be just leaning the shocks in on the towers if there is too much traction.

Setup for a mixed surface track but with a large grass sections on it.

Attached set-up for my local Brisbane track. Mixture of hard-packed dirt and astroturf.

Car was really going well with this setup.

Here is my setup for the St Ives track in Sydney. The layout is pretty much identical to what was run back in 1989 for the offroad worlds. Very similar to Jimmy's setup. However heavier (Losi) oil was used which settled the car down more. Still needs a bit more steering on exit but it was pretty nice to drive.

Arn0 14-06-2007 01:44 AM

Hi everyone!

I've found this setup but I still stuck due to a little language matter - handle a limited amount of foreign language! Or simply said, how to protect some informations and details?? :p :wtf:

I recall seeing some Swedish or Finns around here from time to time, you help while be welcome! ;)

I try with a automatic translator like Babelfish, google translator and so one but no finn/swedish available turn in english.

Stu,
any set-up tips for a high grip astroturf track. Next month we have the Belgium GP coming up in Kampenhout.
thx , cheers and congrats with the A-final last week
RS:)

stefke 02-07-2007 08:17 AM

Well, We ran the Kampenhout round of our national championship today.
The Kampnehout Track has changed a bit compared to last year but remains a very technical, very high grip astro track.
So for all of you coming to the Belgian GP this week : here is the setup I used :

I started from Jimmy's (or Stu's) Indoor setup on top of this page and worked from there. Here are the differences :
  • Internal Front shock limiters : 3mm
  • Internal rear shock limiters : 6 mm
  • Front and rear swaybar (Tamiya, the thickest ones)
  • Rear tyres : Schumacher minipin yellow, one row of pins cut (inside and outside)
  • Front Tyres : Schumacher minipin yellow, two row of pins cut (inside and outside)
  • rideheight : 17mm

This setup can still be improved, but it was good enough to give me 3rd place on the grid. After some bad luck with "popping" turnbuckles, I finished in 6th place. Was a bit disappionted by that but still a good result.

For the GP, I'm going to try Schumacher endcaps on the turnbuckles. They are metric too but are made from a harder plastic.

Hi,
glad to see I am not the only ine who pops turnbuckles, had not thought of using the schumaker ones, good idea.

Good luck with the racing and don't feel too bad about that result it sure was a good result as you say;)

Hupo's setup

Hupo's setup from 2 day testing at the 2007 EC track, Vaasa. Im just wondering about those front camber links and the anti squat in the back, looks pretty odd to me but hey!! worth a try.

Thanks Kentech for getting this and even more info can be found in here (in finnish, sorry):

Hi there,
Am a proud new owner of this beautiful buggy.

My track is in Singapore and it's a sun-baked low traction outdoor hard-packed clay + sand type (more clay than sand) made more for 1/8 GP buggies/trucks with pretty big jumps (which I love doing).

Would anyone have a setup for a track like mine?

Thanks in advance.

delanobe 17-09-2007 02:00 PM

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a grass set up but couldn't find one??

Is their one available?

Thanks

This is the setup I used to take 2nd at the Worksop Schumacher series. The surface is rubberised floor with carpet over the jumps.

nobby 02-11-2007 09:37 AM

just got a 501x and my first run will be this sunday at the aces:o

has anybody got a good starting point for teesside?

our is anybody going so i can have a chat about setups.

cheers chris.

chrispattinson 02-11-2007 09:51 AM

Hi Chris,

I knew you'd be using the Tamiya on Sunday, did you get the brushless in ok?

I tend to use the setup Jimmy posted on 03rd of March in this thread. The only change I made was to have 0 camber link washers in the front, and 1 camber link washer in the rear to alter the roll axis angle.

For indoors, especially Teesside where we can expect some slippy floor on Sunday, I am using a diff in the front as opposed to the one way. Hope this helps. See you Sunday.

Chris P.

nobby 02-11-2007 10:17 AM

hi chris

my 5.5 motor stopped on tues night and when i pulled it to bits the rotors broken:o

so off to ryan at horizon it's going:D

so i'm running brushed on sunday.

gazbaz2 10-12-2007 12:59 AM

Hi all, wonder if anyone can help.
Ive just got the 501X and im having heating problems.
Im running a 5.5 LRP with 37T diff pully and 18T center pully on a 96T spur with a 15T pinion and its getting mad hot after 5mins, ran it without undertray and its still the same, could do with some help.

werner1619 18-04-2008 08:31 PM

I run the same setup and have not heat problems?

Check your belt tention, It might be on the tight side causing the extra drag on the drive train...
and, no foam spacers and stuff in the diff outdrives...

darryl 18-04-2008 09:29 PM

mine is standard kit set up not sure what pulley sizes but 96tooth spur using a team orion 6.5 motor and novak gtb speedo and i use a 20 tooth pinion and it comes off stone cold, thanks to richard lowe for the gearing advice. spot on to me

werner1619 21-04-2008 05:55 PM

Can anyone please advise?

I raced at my local outdoor race track the past weekend, the track has lots of loose sand on the fairly hard surface. resulting in minimal traction.

i would not of had a problem with my 501x, but my friend offered that i should give his B44 a few laps around the track...

thats when I realised that my 501x has a problem, My car feels dead compaired with the B44? I like a responsive car and took to the B44 emediatly. Now I need to know, is it my setup that seriously lacks or is the 501 a bit more dull? Less responsive to steering input?

dallasv8 01-05-2008 02:36 PM

a lad showed up at our track in Townsville,Qld,Australia with a full Tamiya option 501x last night and damn that thing was sweet.it was built to kit setup with the alloy options added including front 1 way and absolutely smoked the B44's and BJ4's and Losi's that reside at the track.it was quite a treat to see it in action as well, it seemed to handle the big doubles and rough stuff with ease.he was running a 10 quad reedy i think and all the other 4wd's are running brushless setups.

track is a smooth in some areas, rough in others clay type surface that usually works best running losi ifmar pins (with 2wd buggy)
i race 2wd buggy so i am not sure what tyres he runs but on a 2wd ifmars are the tyre of choice.we generally water the track down at interval to keep traction up.

he used to run a BJ4 worlds and he had nothing but praise for the Tamiya.i was quite shocked to see a Tamiya on his table to tell the truth.

was good to see a new breed of car on the track for a change.

They are like a virus! One arrived at our club closely followed by a second, 8-12months later and there is now 7 racing regularily and a few others. We quite often have an A final of all 501x's.

----

As far as setup wise we run the kit setup with a few changes made to shock positioning (more upright rear shocks) and a few other minor adjustments. I can do up a full setup if anybody was interested. This is on polished wood with occasional bits of carpet probably 90% wood, the carpet is mostly for jump landings.

I think you are trying to be helpful here - but really this post is wrong on so many levels, it is bad advice and I would be worried that someone would read it and think it was correct.

It is NOT correct.

Crucially, the Durga One-Way DOES NOT WORK in this car. You are running the front one-way backwards but do not know enough about the car to realise it.

The rest of your post is meaningless/misguided.

I know a few people on the board like to pull your leg and I know you enjoy it - I'm not here to pull your leg - I'm just going to ask you to STOP posting stuff you know nothing about, because one of these days someone will take it as fact and will end up in a costly mess.

B44&501xRacerEX 02-06-2008 05:37 PM

:woot: bad advise...
If Jimmy says it's bad advise then so be it.
He has been posting on rctech under the oople name, and
has said the durga front one-way will work.
Jimmy is this a bad setup?

This is what someone said on rctech:
Your Worlds 501X comes with a 50/50 split - 37t pullies at either end - the older car came as standard with an overdriven front end. I made the mistake of thinking that unbalanced the car or simply didn't matter - quite the opposite, it really makes it easier to drive on low traction surfaces (on high traction its probably not noticable either way)
You can get a 36T pulley for your ride - they are the white TA05 36T pullies and come in diff or one way styles (bigger hole in the middle is the only difference) - I'd definitely give this a go if you're finding the rear loose as it really helped me on low traction clay tracks.

jimmy 02-06-2008 06:10 PM

What the hell.

B44&501xRacerEX 02-06-2008 06:18 PM

I'll change that....

Lastly, that is not a setup. It is a component/electronics list. Use the oople or Tamiya setup sheet and call that a setup.

stefke 03-06-2008 02:20 PM

and please continue this discussion in the "setup discussion thread". That's what it's there for.
