Soldering an Orion motor
 

Hi all, just wondering if there are any secrets to soldering wires to an Orion V motor? After trying for several hours last night, I am not entirely convinced it is possible!! Admittedly I am not the best solderer in the world but those little flanges are ridiculous!

you need a good quality large tipped high wattage iron, what are you using

i must admit i have never had an issue with them, but lots of people struggle. they key is to;

a - have an iron with a BIG tip! i use the 12v trick bits iron which has a nice big tip to store heat (as the alloy endbell on the V2 sucks all the heat away.
b - make sure the brass contact is clean (wipe with meths etc to remove grease. possibly give a quick rub with wet n dry to scratch the surface slightly. Then give the contact a good tinning before trying to solder the wire to it.

if you iron has a small tip then don't even try until you can get a different tip or use someone elses iron.

if you are struggling, wipe a small amount of flux on the solder point, then tin that area, make sure the wire going on is nicely tinned. Make sure you got a decent iron, with a good tip, place wire on, tin iron, place iron on, wait till solder melts, hold for five seconds, and voila, an omlette, sorry, soldered wire.

Cheers fellas. I am using a Wella iron I got from B&Q. Seems ok but I have never had one before so I wouldn't know bad from good. I will give it another go in a bit. Want to get it sorted for Sunday :rolleyes:

not any where big enough im affraid, you will be there all week

see if you can buy an optional big chisel tip for it. you'll need a big tip if you ever solder cells.

I had one of these when I was younger - it was quite honestly just not suited to any of the RC stuff I was doing. The heat was intense at the tip but wouldn't spread about and it was too hot to get solder on where you wanted - maybe I was a bit crap back then tho! haha.

Managed to do my ESC and my Deans connectors but when it came to the motor, it simply wasn't having it. I will have to postpone the unveiling of the 12x2 motor 'til another time I think, I will use the Reedy motor with HUGE soldering tabs on for this weekend.

Jimmy, is it the TB0312 your using (the bright yellow one?). I need a new iron too. I was trying to solder my orion yesterday at work using a 400°C Lead free iron and we ended up having to use two irons.. total nightmare.

If the consensus of opinion is that thias iron is the puppy's privates then i will get one from Dom. If it turns out to be no good i can always do some branding at Tiverton...

I always remove the endbell from the motor, thsi really helps as the heat has no-where else to go !

Beast of an iron i use one and its still hot enought to do cells 10 minutes after i have turned it off.

And the tip is perfect for cells but you can get smaller tips for more detailed jobs you can get them in oswestry for 18 quid.

Trickbits currently don't do a soldering iron, but the irons they used to do are Antex ones which can be bought direct from Antex.co.uk
I think a shop in Harlow, Essex called Slipsteam models does them as well about £17, failing that I bought a Spec 50 watt 12v iron last month for £39 posted with a long life tip included free.

The problem with getting an iron with such a high wattage, is when you do your cells you run a high risk of popping your cells, and with the IB cells being less robust than the GP cells you will have problems.

ash is that a serious iron or wot does it glow or just turn the tip to molten metal:D

I use something similar to Ash, don't want to be dropping that mutha in your lap, it is ace though, as if you are good at soldering, cells take about half a second to solder a tag on, as the heat is so intense, it stays very localised.

yep thats the way just touch to tag em up minimal heat transfer

sory thats not true the bigger the better to solder cellsm quick dab and job done, what naks cells is holding an iron on them trying to get the solder to flow

All i can say is it is a ace iron Its alot better than my old 60 watt iron and as for cells if you can solder it is ace it is on the cell for a maximum of about a second when it is fully heated up. And as for v2's it is easy for that.

Bugger it time for a brushless LRP

They can be difficult, but as above big bit, high wattage gets it done. Great motors tho. You will find the Checkpoints easier to solder and the motors just as good.

some have suggested corrally connector, so may try that. otherwise another motor...
