Motor frying
Hi
at dudley this weekend i was frying motors evety race they where coming off really really hot i started with a 19t which gotreally hoti started with a 23 on a white spur and came of really really then i wnt to a 24 and that came of slightly cooler but still to hot. Then i went to a 25 and was even hotter again. So i went back to the 24 for round 4 with a new hole in the shell for cooling. This also got hot but i only ran for a few minutes as i was getting interferance. So i thought it maight have been my motor just not powerfull enough so i changed it to my 14 V2 and i was doing well insane amounts of speed i was in third place chasing the 2nd place man when the motor came unsoldered cus of the heat i was runing this on a 23t pinion and a white spur. What the hell is wrong why is it getting so hot. A:eh?: |
your way under geared, when i ran a v2 dynasty in xx4 i ran it 29/78

Oh I was told by carl lathem and doom to run it on a 23/24 on a 78 spur. Ill give a 29 a go.

That still doesnt exsplain the 14 though i was runnign that on a 23 and that got the hotest. And tyre man it is very true he was going on about adding 9/10 to the wind.

78/23 gives a overal gear ratio of 8.26630
78/24=7.921875 thought that should be ok ish om a 19 turn |

Cut some vents on the shell, i had a lot of overheating problems in mine until i did this.

So ull blow hot air onto a hot motor and speedo....
Get an old shell and try it before then. |

But i have to say this was an awsome car to drive i had a little understeer but i didnt do anything about it as it was the last of my problems but i think my final was going really well i was just as fast as a tamiya 501x and i have to say i think i wasnt doing to bad as i had only driven this car for about 2 minutes before dudley then for about 10 minutes during the day not including my final. But it is an awsome car it really was easy to drive i has tight on the corners but i think i need to do something about the way it rides the bumps as it was strugerling slightly over the bumps and i need to sort out my understeer. Its a shame about my motor in the final if it had holded out i think i would have had second. A |

The white car i think it was a tamiya. But the blue car which i knew was a tamiya didnt lap me.

Ok hat tamiya did lap me ithought the blue one was a tamiya as i saw a blue car that said tamiya on the side when i was waiting to race so it must have been a diffrent car. OK i must apoligise the white tamiya did lap me. But the blue cat didnt. A |

The best advise i can give you is not to over analize the situation.
Concentrate on what was wrong with your car/setup or driving and try to better yourself at the next meeting rather than worrying about who came first and last. Have a chat to Phil Sleigh....he is one of the most knowledgable people when it comes to XX-4's......he can give you advise on your overheating problems |

It was poo at the weekend with all my problems i onlt finished one race. And that mean the chance of my getting ni the inddor finals is very very slim:(
Maybe i should have done 2wd and done better in that meaning more likely qualifying for the inddor finals.:eh?: But oh well life goes on I dont know what to do wit this moto probelem knowone else seems to have any problems. Why does it have to be me. But i love the way it feels and the way it handels it was amazing but i should have proberly run the cut silver instead of the green. And it was pretty ballistic down the straighy. I understand y the 19 got hot but not the 14 as it was geared right. A |
to be honest ash the track was aweful it had no flow:)

Tight indoor tracks always overheat motors regardless of car or driver...you just need to listen and learn a few tricks from the other losi drivers.
when you get the right gear ratio and shell cutouts sorted things will get better. As i said in and earlier post....have a chat with Phil Sleigh via P.M....he is the best source of information on xx4's and will be more than happy to help a fellow losi driver. |
I know a few people who drive losi's so i will have a chat with them. Phil has been a total star so far with the help he has given me with the indoor finals etc. And the advice he has given me on the xx4 and i dont like to pester people. But ill give the xx4 a run at oz of thursday as that isnt as tight and is a fast track so ill see if i have the same problem.

I can give you a few pointers (you may have already know this information)
1: If you have an very old xx4 you may need to mill the chassis out under the motor to give it a bit of air (if your car is one of the new worlds edition or has had a replacement LOSA9914 Low Center Gravity Chassis ...it is already done) 2: Get the hot weather shell ( LOSA8045 Hot Weather Body) this has air scoops you can cut out to get more airflow over the motor 3: Run the suggested ratios that the others on this site have put forward....it sounds like you were undergeared. 4: Try to drive in a "smooth manner" ie...try not to stab the throttle on and off hard going into and out of the bends as this can cause the motor to overheat. You may know this stuff...but then again you may not.... hope this helps |
Thanks for the help 2 and 4 where helpeful. As for 1 my xx4 is a brand new xx4 it was the first time it had ever been run properly also meaning its the first time i have ever driven a 4wd.
