Kyosho Ultima RB5 - full details
http://www.redrc.net/wp-content/uplo...yoshorb5-1.jpg
During the Nurnberg toy fair a few weeks back we showed you some pictures of Kyoshos all new 2wd competition buggy, the Ultima RB5. We didnt have any more information on the car other than what we could see and the little bits that we had read, so now that Kyosho have released the complete details of this completely new car we have decided to post all the information right here for you reading and viewing pleasure. http://www.redrc.net/wp-content/uplo...yoshorb5-2.jpg The new Ultima RB5 only shares rear hubs with the Lazer ZX-5 and a few common hardware items, but the essential and distinguishing components of the car, such as the chassis, transmission, bulkheads, shock towers, suspension and the sleek aerodynamic body, are all new. Each aspect of the car is specially designed and tested to produce maximum performance. Likewise, the materials chosen for this new Ultima are exhaustively tested - all with the goal to create the ultimate no-nonsense competition car that’s ready to take on the world. ChassisThe chassis plate is light and strong, featuring a specially formulated carbon fiber composite for the best balance of performance and durability. Strategic braces molded into the chassis enhance the stiffness without adding any unnecessary weight. Separate front and rear “clips” allow fast and easy removal of the front or rear end of the car, which makes maintenance and repair much easier. Designed to accept stick packs and racing-style 6-cell matched packs, the RB5 chassis features an adjustable battery mounting position that allows you to shift weight bias to suit track conditions and your driving style. http://www.redrc.net/wp-content/uplo...yoshorb5-4.jpg Transmission The new transmission features a smaller, more compact housing that keeps the motor as low and close to the transmission as possible, which reduces CG and improves bump handing. The three-gear transmission features an internal ball differential that uses standard 3/32-inch diff balls and 1/16-inch thrust balls. The differential is also externally adjustable, and a dust cover fits over the adjustment holes so the thrust bearing lasts much longer. An injection molded gear cover is included, which better fits the motor plate to minimize dust and debris for longer gear life. Rear Suspension The rear suspension arms are symmetrical so a single replacement arm can be used on either side of the car, saving money and space inside your pit box because you don’t need to carry as many replacement parts. The inside of the arms are attached to the chassis using separate suspension mounts, which will allows anti-squat adjustment. The rear wheel hubs feature three lower hinge-pin holes, which allow modification of the ride height with minimal disturbance of the suspension geometry. Vertical ball studs for the both the inner and out rod ends of the upper link mean the rear suspension geometry can be fine-tuned with shims. Front Suspension Longer, straighter and symmetrical suspension arms connect to a narrow front bulkhead. The bumper/skid plate, suspension block, nose plate and front bulkhead all come together to form a very rigid assembly, to which the front suspension arms mount. The standard position of the suspension mount produces 25 degrees of hinge pin angle in the front suspension arms, but simply flipping the suspension mount increases the hinge pin angle to 30 degrees. The added flexibility of having adjustable hinge pin angles means you have more options when it comes to setting up your car. Like the rear arms, a single replacement arm can be used on either side of the car. Offset steering hubs make high-speed handling a dream, while floating axles ride in bearings that are mounted in the hub instead of the wheel This moves the weight of the bearings inboard for more responsive suspension, the bearings are under less stress, and they’re better shielded from the elements. This means the front wheel bearings last longer and run smoother. The front track width is also easily adjusted, which means the amount of steering response is easily increased or decreased for track conditions and driver preference. Steering Assembly Ball bearings provide smooth movement of the steering bellcranks, which are mounted on the chassis at the same angle as the suspension arms. This eliminates bump steer and produces more accurate Ackerman geometry throughout the entire range of steering motion. The steering plate (center link) features horizontally mounted ball studs, which mean Ackerman can be fine tuned using shims behind the ball studs, offering a nearing infinite range of adjustment. Captured Hinge Pins A simple button head screw captures all the outer hinge pins of the Ultima RB5. The rear inner hinge pins are truly captured between the suspension mounts, and the notched inner front pins are secured with a setscrew through the front suspension mount. This means that the hinge pins are much more secure and less likely to come loose. Low-Profile Shock Towers The front shock tower is mounted as far back on the chassis as possibly, as are the shocks, to keep the mass as low as possible. Likewise, the rear shock tower is also designed to keep a low profile, yet allow enough suspension travel to ensure the best possible handling. The shock towers are molded from an exhaustively tested composite, which is much more costly to produce than shock towers made from woven graphite, but will also provide greater durability. Threaded Aluminum “Triple” Shocks Kyosho is well known for silky smooth shocks and the new “Triple” shocks included with the Ultima RB5 are no exception. The shock body consists of three major components - a top cap, threaded body, and a lower cap. The aluminum shock bodies feature a threaded spring pre-load collar for quick and easy adjustment. The threaded adjuster features an O-ring that prevents the preload settings from moving, which ensures consistent performance from start to finish. The lower shock cap allows quick and easy maintenance of the double O-ring seals. Low-Profile Body No less than ten versions of the new body for the RB5 were thoroughly tested to maximize performance and to ensure that you have the best-looking car on the track. The entire R&D team as well as the factory drivers were involved in the development, and the finished product is the best-performing body ever used on a 2WD buggy according to the team. Looks good!
Well ... just when I was ready to buy a ZX5 along comes this beauty.
Is there any opinion that Kyosho will release a new model ZX5 similar to the KM kit that may share a few more parts with the RB5? Maybe I should start with an RB5 and wait to see what happens with the ZX5? Great to see an alternative to AE and Losi. Jeff |
Does anyone know any news on the Team for this year as the closing date for the Nats is days away and I am still waiting news?
|
Get booked in stu

any news on when it will be available?
|
I have to admit, from those pics and a well written press release the car all of a sudden seems much better to me, in fact it looks a nice car. I like that feature of being able to turn round the front bulkhead to change wishbone rake!
Hope you get sorted Woody! |
i am sorry chaps but this car just looks cheap and nasty to me. I'm sure it isnt but it's just the impression i get.
Anyway I'm sure jimbo will be reviewing one soon since he is the god of 1:10 off road reviewage and photography. |

sorry dude...maybe in the flesh i'll like it more

Thats absoloutely bonkers that, they spend all that money, making a car, then allow distributors to NOT set a team up!!!
|
Pluckin Dell rings to mind he sits rollin his eyes !!!!
 Thats the craviest thing ive heard this year. |
$%*&^£% hell!
I hope Woody still decides to run one and show everyone what it is capable of. Maybe then Kyosho will sit up and take notice if he gets good results. |

Shop test driver...............wonder who that might be......... |
It's a shame if that is true, because the car just won't get the coverage it needs - i think it's got a lot of potential looking at it, i genuinely can't see any reason it won't be as capable as the XXX or maybe B4.
|
Go on then Nick, buy one and show us!!! :D
|
team drivers can be a pain, after all you give them a car for the season expecting them to run it and half way through the season they start running something else at meetings, all the drivers know your a driver for losi/ae/etc and your running something else what does that say about the car?.
as for the shop demonstrator, i have a choice of several drivers lee martin, tony truman, kevin lee all f1 and national A finalists, but to give a car a true test it needs to be in the hands of a specialist. clearly there is only one boy for the job:). |
you should give it a whirl John! Test it's durability!
Can you bring it to the next CML or regional meeting? i'd like a closer look as it's quite appealing to go with the zx5! |
it should be at the first regional on the 8th assuming it arrives in time, for me to drive it wouldn't be a good test, i couldn't get round the first corner
|
I think it looks nice, seem very... erh..."racy"?:D :p
Are there any plans of making a carbon konversion for this? Maybe KM will make a kit like the conversion kit for the Lazer...? |

I have confimation today that there will be team but they are very busy right now so it will be decided very soon. Please dont listen to any other coments about this as they are untrue.;)
|
man, I hope they pluck you up woody!!!

Ditto!!! |
oooo anly a few more weeks to go. if its as durable as the zx-5, with just a few minor hop-ups, then i'll be happy.
mark pavidis is running it this weekend at cactus race. |
Just to say thanks for all you kind words but I am afraid I cant wait any longer as the season starts in a few weeks and i need to practice with a new car/cars.
|
I am looking forward to review this car on release - and have some big plans in place for the car already to help establish it as a serious competitor.

Good on ya Jimmy, theres been two dominant names in 2wd for far two long now it's about time the mould was broken or at very least cracked/challenged.
Woody, know where your coming from! All the best, im sure your do well! It's a shame these people drag there heels, could be a bad start for a good car. You'd have thought that they would have learnt that lesson from the ZX5 a great car. Popular car but let down by support, support that could have made it much more popular and even a winner. |

ah, just read the Oople 501x thread. guess not! :-( |
Hi guys,
I'm back and will try to do my best to stay tune on Ooople as i like this forum... But I went trough all this thread and read it all.... Unfortunately, i won't be able to answer each person and all questions.... But all i want now it's to stop all the crap and untrue stories going around.... 1 - The Ultima RB5 should reach shops between the 3rd April and the week after.... 2 - Woody is a nice guy that I'd like to meet for his professional personality and a great driver that unfortunately won't have the chance to join Kyosho this season... 3 - Kyosho UK won't set up any EP Team this year and for many reasons... And i want to thanks all the drivers who applied and took the time to support us during the last few months... But i can assure many of you that i will work hard to get a Team up and ready for 2008.... Just cross fingers that Kyosho UK gets even bigger this year... 4 - A few guys will find it hard knowing that i have been around here and was the most exited about having a team and more.... But many have to know, we are taking a year away to think and come back stronger (no rush, no worry) because we are really disappointed with the EP field that has been a real lost or disaster in 2005-2006 when we saw many drivers / shops that we helped and gone for an another brand/car in the middle of the season. Or even worst, not having any feedback from no one as part 2 guys (They know who they are) and will ever thanks them for supporting Kyosho in 2006.... I hope that i have clarified a few things, feel free to ask me anything as i will be happy to help you out.... and all the best for 2007 to all racers... Thanks, John |
I think, with a new car in 2wd coming out, and a UK spec ZX-5, to not actively promote at least one driver (woody maybe) would be, to the racing fraternity, suicide by Kyosho UK, so many people would realy look seriously at the 2wd, to try something new, and if you have a team driver capable of bringing the car along, so new owners got a good UK base setting would just help add to sales.
But that is my personal opinion after seeing the total disaster that has been Academy in the UK. |
I agree with DCM. the lazer is a hugely popular club car due to it being half the price of an X10, BJ4 WE, Yoke etc.
Nathan Ralls helped people no end last year with set up advice and build tips to improve the reliability of the car. I would not have qualified 4th behind him at tiverton F3's if it wasn't for his continued help over the weekend and i will sorely miss him this year. And with a new 2wd coming out, club racers are going to want a decent starting set up from a recognised driver, along with any build tips. Otherwise they will by the car for curiosity, run it, think it handles poorly or breaks down, then sell it cheap, as happened in the early days of the ZX5 here. A big missed opportunity for Kyosho, and i think they will struggle to get a foothold a year down the line. |
Sorry guys:( I will try Next year.
|
It's a shame, but I will review the Ultima soon and hopefully help provide a decent resource for RB5 owners - possibly a long-term test also, wait and see.

Your statement here says it all. I cant help but also to agree with DCM and jim76. Personally if it was me launching a new product into a very competative market i would want it to go in with some impact to make it stand out and get noticed, not just hopefully kicking around the back of the pit area hoping somebody will notice it, or even pick it out in a race when its surrounded by B4's which are more easily recognised to most. As DCM said if it had a named drive at the helm to give it a foot hold, and make it show its potential by challenging the B4's and XXX's. A good solid review from the likes of jimmy ( who's review of the ZX5 made my mind up really that it was the 4wd for me!) then sales will increase as people would look to the change there cars. There would be a new contender to the run of the mill 2wd's. But on the other hand if there not shown competitvely in the field then im sorry to say i dont hold much hope for sucsess for the RB, i wish it well mind, i really do would be grand to see it running well up there! I guess what im saying is it would be a shame to see it just become "a good club car" like the zx5. By never really coming too fruit, through lack of knowledge and support in its maiden year. As somebody looking at getting into 2wd, im gonna be looking with interest at what cars are doing well to influence my decision in what to buy. People are going to spend there hard earned readies on what they can see, or read what is winning the races, as we all aspire to be the next race winner! And im sure if you were in our shoes you would do the same thing. Just the ramblings of a die hard RC fan |
Maybe the fact of the matter was that in the first year, there was maybe a poor 'choice' of driver or shop support, or no more intrinsic tie-in to driver and distributor.
I remember Stu Wood of old, and he was Mr Traxxas, he showed loyalty and realy pulled the car out of the weeds and into the limelight. I think the current market are looking for something new to run, but don't want to be the 'odd one' working on their own. The correct choice of driver is so important. It is fine to offer discounted 'team' drives through shops, but you don't have much feedback or responsibility, but to support a driver direct, there is a much greater bond. |
Wait guy's got a great idea !
Jonboy why not help jimmy out with a bit of help and support with a long-term RB review. Woody could race it on a long-term test (and give it a solid base in the uk) enabling jimmy to give it followup reviews. All under the guise of Team Oople, and everybodies a winner ! Woody gets a good challenge to bring on the car! Jimmy gets a chance to do what he's great at "writing brilliant reviews"! And Jonboy you and kyosho get the best of both worlds! Great reviews, Top class driver, And this all adds up good support and hopefully results for the RB. And all this to the advantage of us racers to! Just a thought ( Great one in my opinion ;) )        Now see if u guys can pull it off ! |
