Kyosho ZX-5

Hi Jim. Good to see your new car going well today and i have a feeling this car is going to put Kyosho back on the map here in the UK.

jimmy 23-10-2005 10:21 PM

I wasnt happy with the final i have to say, i could have done a lot better but the track was, horrible, to put it mildly.. bit of a lottery.

Really like the car, i wasnt expecting anything like the performance but im very pleased with it, pleased enough to be racing it instead of the BJ so it cant be bad.

chrislee 24-10-2005 08:36 AM

It did look good yesterday Jimmy. I think i could be leaning towards one

I was fancying a Pred (mainly for the bling  ) but i don't think i can afford all the spur gears required to keep it running

Chris

Take it the pred ones area bit weak then??

jimmy 27-10-2005 09:32 AM

Not taking the mick like, but hes been thru 3 spur gears in it and raced it once..
landing off the big jump at batley, it had already lost a tooth or so, and i think it lost all but one in one bad landing.
not sure why it stripped, maybe they need better spurs ? :afro:

PaulRotheram 27-10-2005 10:12 AM

or he needs to use the slipper !!

guy at our track had that happen to him at our middle jump at southport (you dont exactly get alot of height from it!).

all he did was back the slipper off abit and it was perfection.

hes done a few mods to the 'weak' steering issues and the thing looks great!

jimmy 27-10-2005 10:48 AM

i guess...
I cant imagine that happening to other spurs, normally somet else breaks on cars.

PaulRotheram 27-10-2005 01:10 PM

meh.. dunno. slap an AE spur on it and happy days.

BluesFan 28-10-2005 12:53 AM

Jimmy, just curious if you've tried any of the other caster hubs up front yet. One of the complaints/praises I hear from lots of folks around where I'm at is the extreme turn in off-power. It doesn't bother me too much since obviously it can be huge advantage on tight tracks if used properly, but of course, you constantly run the risk of oversteer and clipping corners. Right now, I'm running diffs on both ends with the one-way center shaft. I hear that is part of the cause, but certainly it can't be all of it. I've always found that on-power/off-power steering is greatly affected by caster adjustments. Especially off-power. I won't get a chance to run my buggy again until saturday, but I've already changed out my caster hubs to the 10 degree one. I can't imagine running the 4 degree hubs! I guess if running the 10 degree hubs doesn't affect it much, I'll try just running the normal shaft in the middle, but I thought I'd ask your opinion since you seem to be the one with the most time on the buggy to date and quite knowlegable with adjustments.

Just got my ZX-5 from the Postman.

As you said Jimmy, it's a right old laugh trying to find the parts, i'm bozz eyed already. The screws are a nightmare, i've charged up the cordless drill....

Taking a break, it's taken me 3 hours to get through the first few pages, looks nice though, diffs / transmission is lovely and smoooth.

Jimmy, those new carbon bits look far too nice....

jimmy 31-10-2005 06:34 PM

Hi Blues,
Not tried any other hubs yet, have some 10deg on the way though.
to be honest its easy to take away steering.. you can cut your front tyres / take spikes / studs (or whatever) off, tighten your front diff a little, run a solid centre and diff in the front.
Or even run the spool in the front for the minimum of off-power steering.

If you are having a problem i would definately take off the centre one way, personally I run the front one way which does give a lot of steering, but the tracks i have been running on require a lot of steering, especially indoors sliding the back end round is required..
I have to say its a very controlable and stable car. much more than the yokomo bcs was.

Andy,
nice one!!
The screws, fun aint they... Spoke to peter moss, (proracing) and aparently his is just above min weight with the stock screws, and i think lunsford turnbuckles (shell unpainted tho).
My car has a lot of wiring and thick paint on the shell which probably pushes it higher..
The Ti screws and carbon fibre would easily take it underweight tho if i sorted those other things..
Have a new shell on the way so i'll try some fancy airbrush madness on it

Oscar 31-10-2005 06:49 PM

Jimmy,
Too much steering is a relative thing. That is to say what you consider too much, other may consider not enough. (youv'e driven enough of my cars to realise this  ) I think its much more about personal preference than anything, but I do agree its easier to loose steering than to find it. If you need to lose a bit, I find a good starting point is to go up a spring (harder) at the front.

jimmy 31-10-2005 09:07 PM

You can handle more steering because you are a super star john.. I have to say, as ive got better with the 4wd ive wanted more and more steering because i can handle it.

andys 03-11-2005 12:12 AM

Finally finished and painted the ZX-5.
Very impressed with the kit, looking forward to running it :)

Looks awesome andy, like the new paint style you have, nice.

andys 03-11-2005 10:45 AM

Cheers Jimmy.

Unfortunatley I can't come to Batley this sunday :( as it's my little girls 3rd birthday party, bad timing...

I will though give it a run this saturday at York :)

Did you stick with no.2 pistons all round jimmy ?
The backs got 30wt in and it feels too soft, the front with 40wt seems ok, I might try some harder rear springs and 35wt, just trying to set it up similar to the BJ for indoors.

jimmy 03-11-2005 11:02 AM

yea i used the kit pistons, im going to try 35/40 in the back, should be about right i reckon with the blue springs back there.

SimonW 03-11-2005 08:45 PM

I'm off to tivvy this sunday would you suggest starting on AE greens all round or silvers, even thought that silver(F) and blue(R) would maybe work

jimmy 03-11-2005 10:42 PM

To be honest I'd stick the kit springs / setup on and try it from there, not sure what tivvy is like this time of year but the car comes setup for dirt tracks so i'd be tempted to do that and adjust it from there.
Wouldnt put the anti roll bar on though..

andys 04-11-2005 11:54 AM

Jimmy.

2 Questions for you...

1_What gearing should I start with for York ? (Say for a 10 or 12 single)
2_Anti roll bar indoors, yeah or neigh ?

Cheers.

Andy.

jimmy 04-11-2005 12:16 PM

Stick that kit pinion mate for an 11/12 maybe go a tooth smaller for a 10.
I'd stick the anti roll bar on aye, i always used one on the bj4 indoors and it helped get it round the corners..

i must be a throtle monster then as i would go kit pinion on a 10 or even 1 higher  and i always tend to run mine with rear anti roll bar

paulj 05-11-2005 08:48 AM

Hi jimmy,

what pinion for the rear gearbox? That's all I've got built so far

plenty of spares though 8)

wouter.z 05-11-2005 07:14 PM

He guys,

Im thinking of switching my bj for the kyosho so I was wondering if Losi wheels fit the ZX5???

paulj 05-11-2005 10:36 PM

rears are a no for sure due to the ZX5 using hex drives, the fronts might fit but my guess would be no.

I'll check it out tomorrow with some Losi wheels and let you know.

jimmy 05-11-2005 11:27 PM

no, unfortunately front and rears will not fit, which is a shame.. :( makes it harder to convert..

andys 06-11-2005 12:44 PM

Had my first runs with the ZX-5 at york last night.

Generally really impressed, it was though a bit evil with new mini-pins all round, when it was on the carpet it gripped like hell. Didn't break anything, even with grip rolling at the end of the straight and crashing in style.....

Apart from that, and my terrible driving, it's looks really promising, i'm going to change the kit springs to associated (if they fit) as the kit ones are too soft, especially on the front.

The car looks nice going around the track, seems to sit really nicely and it's very controlable on the slippy floor, you can really throw it into the corners and it seems really well balanced and weighted.

All in all Very impressed, not quite as good as the BJ yet... but for a kit set up straight out of the box it was excellent. Can't wait to try a better set up next week.

By the way, where's the best place to get spares in the UK, as I could do with some, and some wheels ? Ta.

jimmy 07-11-2005 01:30 PM

Hey andy, i heard after breaking the pred, rich isherwood ran the zx5 also ? liked it from what i heard.

AE springs fit, just, i have put a bevel on the height adjusters to centralise the springs since they wont go over the adjusters..
still trying to find a spring / oil combo i like. car was sitting right back under acceleration yesterday, i think i have got a bit lost with the setup and need to start again.

Sold the BJ4x4 yesterday to bruce, so I'm commited to the kyosho for now.

Only place i know of locally selling the kyosho stuff is elite in elland/halifax way.. Otherwise i think places like apex, ben racing, microtech, dms, all have stuff in..

andys 08-11-2005 10:23 PM

Hey up Jimmy.

I hope i'm getting a 'kick-back' on the BJ sale. I told Bruce that you now had a ZX-5 and after Bruce showed me how my BJ should be driven he enquired as to if you would be interested in selling yours, I obviously told him to get in touch through oople.com. I did though say that I thought you'd want to keep it, you being a collector and all, how wrong I was.

I also mentioned oople to 'atomic carbon' my bits should be on their way soon.

Cheques or Payapal is my prefered payment method :)

jimmy 08-11-2005 10:40 PM

Lol you sly dog.

Bruce came over to batley to watch on sunday and bullied me by offering me cash!!..
To be honest I almost wish I'd not sold it, its a great car, but I can get another car to review now I guess. :bom:

andys 08-11-2005 10:45 PM

Yokomo perhaps ?

I like the look of the new Baja 5B from HPI personally......

Any chance of seeing you at York on Saturday ?

jimmy 08-11-2005 11:52 PM

Might try for york, vicky is working i think, so i can sneak out! shhhhh

Saw the Baja 5B in the flesh the other week down HPI, even got to touch it!!! wooooo!.. That thing is awesome, i heard january / feb time. Look a lot of fun!..
