kyosho lazer zx5 RTR durable?
 
im new in the 4wd buggy class.so was considering the zx5 RTR as first buggy.i'll be using it mostly for bashing on road cuz my neighbourhood lack offroad terrains.but the tamiya durga seem like a tough one too.cant decide. explanation on their maintanence and wear and tear also durability wold be helpfull.i dun wanna break stuff on my first run.expect me to do sillymistakes like bumping on to curbs and parking lot poles.hehe.me quite noob.

oohh.does kyosho zx5 hav any street tires tat can fit well in their stock wheels? sometin like proline road hawgs

Wheel rim sizes are all much the same, so hawgs will fit if they fit 10th cars, the centre hex and the offset of the hex(or whatever) changes on wheels, so you will need wheels that fit (they may not need to be kyosho on the kyosho).

Durga is as tough as old boots.

The ZX5-RTR is a great club car but I'm not sure it'll like being bashed too much. Although that said a few simple and cheap upgrades like ali hinge pin holders will make it as tough as you like too.

I went for the ZX5 RTR as i was going to use it at the local club. Before i started i did a bit of "practice bashing" and it was quite easy to break in places.

I would say zx5 better for using at a club, but if it is for bashing only, you just got vote number 3 for the Durga!

ok the durability part is cleared.durga hands down.but which buggy will hav easier maintanence on their transmission if i were to use a 12 turn motor?thinking of brushless in near future.wen pocket allows.:)

u said kyosho zx5 will be tough wit cheap upgrade, if then how cheap?? plus zx5 givs evryting(RTR).

ur opinoin wil be vry helpful.still cant decide though.

ZX5 is a pretty tough car. The improved moldings on the shock tower mounting are now really strong... to the point it is now the tower that breaks.

The weak spot is the plastic front hinge pin brace, replacing with the genuine kyosho alu part is about £15, but there will be cheaper alternatives about.

The advantage of the ZX5 is that it comes in an RTR pack, i think they now do an RTR version that is equiped with Orion Brushless.

Durga is a great car too though.

zx5 vs durga
 
i run a zx5 5.5t brushless lipo my mate has durga same spec the last couple of meetings the durga breaks nearly every heat. the top of the shocks are plastic and seem to snap off while my zx5 breaks the odd hub and wishbone. the zx5 is more presice but alot harder to drive there are plenty of ally hop ups for zx that make it pretty unbreakable.the durga chews belts with alot of power where as the zx is shaft. i would not buy a rtr though self tappers and plastic outdrive cups mean you will have to upgrade to put power through it. by a good second hand one off the for sale forum.

durga drives well but keeps dying .get some anaconda tyres 2.2" they fit all 1/10 microtecracing website will sort you. regards budfish

not exactly;

Durga (or Baldre) is available as a brushless version.

both should be compatible with most tyres 1/10 off road 4x4 (2.2) tyres.

both require basic amounts of maintenance and will both have pro's and cons in this respect, once correctly setup i would expect the DB01 to be less maintenance because of the sealed drivetrain.

As the ZX-5 is shaft-driven, would it not be the more maintenance-free drivetrain?

Durga vs ZX-5
 
I am the mate of Budfish - i run a Durga.

He is right had lots of issues breaking parts - particulary shock caps and towers - however i glued some off-cuts of dense foam on - problem solved.

Durga is easier to drive (well at least mine is as i have it set up properly)

To be totally honest its just down to personnel preference really..

If your going for brushless in the future then durga will need some mods to the rear diff - done it to mine - lazer can prob take it straight off.

For me its the durga - but thats cause i have one - if i had a lazer id ber saying choose that !!

All the mainstream cars are much of a much - they will all need maintennace and work doing on them - just the way it is.

Now if you looking for very low maintennace i would reccommend

traxxas slash - had a couple and they are tough as foo**K jumped mine over skateboard half pipes - and i mean right over the top railing and all - no damge at all

traxxas bandit - got one of theese too that i just bought off a pal with a lazer - again very strong hardly ever breaks, parts are much cheaper than tamiya or kyosho plus you have the added bonus of being able to put an 11.volt lipo straight in (as long as you get VXL version) and that means up to 70mph ! which is ff**N fast as...

For bashing i would go traxxas definatley - strong and very cheap on parts...

lhs in mlaysia dun support traxxas parts.oni hpi,tamiya,kyosho and team ae.i noe vry tough and fast out of box.so sad in mlysia.well i hav decided on durga then.if i use zx5,i maybe willbreak things a lot faster and i want for road surfaces ,sadly kyosho zx5 has no street tires tat fit(RTR doesnt even hav inserts).and high maintanence coz tranny is exposed to dirt.also too fragile.

If Tamiya support is better in Malaysia than Kyosho, that makes the decision for you.

I'm not sure about all this business of street tyres? Is it for 2.2" rims? I know one source of 2.2" 12mm hex buggy wheels are the Academy rims - Academy is a Korean brand, and I'm guessing it's proximity to Malaysia means you will have supply of them there. In the UK, DMS-Racing carry them, and at £3 a pair, front or back, they're cheaper than most, and will accept any 2.2" tyre. With a hex adapter, you could use the rears at least on AE, Losi and the most recent Tamiyas.

I said before - exposed transmissions are surely only an issue for belt-drive cars. As the Kyosho has a shaft, not a belt, that should not weigh against it in the decision.

Ok, here is what I tell everybody at club who asks about the ZX5-RTR ... please remember I am a Kyosho fan and race them myself, and will as long as they make 1/10th competition cars!

The ZX5-RTR is amazing value for money, no better value way to get into 4wd offroad.

The parts you really should upgrade ASAP (in my opinion) are the inner suspension hinge pin braces. I had the 3 racing parts on my race SP for more than a year with no issues at all. The are about £5 each, can be found for less.

Next on the list is the alloy tower mounts, again they are cheap at about £7-£8 each

Once you have those parts then you will have a very strong car!

Next job is to take all the plastic suspension parts and simmer them in a saucepan for about 10 mins then let them cool naturally in the water to room temp. This will make them more supple and thus less likely to suffer stress fractures.

Now your car is near bullet proof from the suspension point of view.

ZX5 transmission is the easiest to maintain I've come across in 23 years or racing. Diffs can be out with 8 screws and once messed properly the gears last forever, never changed one and have been racing the ZX5 since 07 with motors as hot as 4.5 brushless.

The weak point on the RTR (for use with hot motors) is the driveshafts. These are not that cheap but once you have them are fit and forget ... don't know anybody who has broken a Kyosho driveshaft in their SP/FS/RB5.

As far as road tires are concerned then either use those left over from racing or again 3 racing do some very cheap tires on ZX5 fitment wheels that are perfect for road going play time!!!!

It's horses for courses and a lot depends on your local exchange rate and importers but I'd say £ for £ the ZX5-RTR when hoped up is way cheaper than a similar spec Durga.

As said thought the Durga is bomb proof more or less straight out of the box

A front hinge pin brace?

I believe it is this part.

RCMart have whole sections devoted to parts & upgrades of specific cars:
Lazer ZX-5/TF-5
DB-01
Tamiya 501X (some parts should fit DB-01)

I'm uncertain about wheel mounts, but were Tamiya buggies prior to the 501X and DB-01 equipped with 12mm hexes like the Kyosho? 3Racing does a number of wheel sets for DF-03s etc.

I talked to Kyosho today because my ZX-5 arrived and blew a shock before I ran down the first battery pack. They said the RTR is not the same as the standard ZX-5, it uses different plastics, and cheaper driveline components.
I would like to comment on the high quality of the tech support though.
