This a a very rare Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid Special, it has UJ's in front carbon fibre chassis (only available on this car or as part of a conversion set (approx £100) or bought as a part for approx £70!!, has the yellow telephone dial wheels also which were only on this kit or bought seperately and the very rare Square block tyres front and rear. I bought the car as a runner and cleaned it up a little and added the bodyset and decals (all done by myself and im not the best with apaint can!, although i have 9 more to do so im getting better!).

Cheers

isobarik 22-04-2009 07:56 AM

But why has it alu shocktowers ??? Mine had frp.

mvh Isobarik

traffman 22-04-2009 04:18 PM

My mates still got his optima mid lwb he raced in the early nineties .
It has the frp shock towers and an anodized chassis.
If i grab it from him sometime ill pop some piccies up.

My old mid swb had frp shock towers aswell , it was the turbo mid .
That one above in the picture looks like the standard one.

Bodyshell is an early RC10 one, Protech I believe. My dream is to find a Javelin roll cage, sweet

Chassis has been anodised by a small local company. Color is a bit dark though, more than the Celebration one, but it matches rather well with the shocks.

Turbo Optima Mid Special

2 Attachment(s)
Nope your wrong sorry its a Turbo Optima Mid Special, it did come originally with FRP shock towers but as some of you know they broke very easily, so many racers replaced them with alloy ones either home made or from optima mid, these are from Optima mid, i have the original FRP shock towers (i have 11 sets of them) which go on the various optimas i have (i think at last count 23/24). I enclose the pictures of the latest 2 to be completed. They are an original optima with ORIGINAL Kyosho celebration gold chassis, alloy wheels bridgestone tyres and an optima body done in JPS livery. The second is a Optima mid custom in box art)

OPTIMA

The Optima was my first 1/10th electric car and at the time was hot on the racing scene. I must have driven that poor thing to death (and then some...LOL). Never realy raced it outside of the 540 class as back then I was a junior and the car was fast enough for me anyways.
Sadly I traded it for a newer model back then and i think it ended up in R/C heaven after the guy who got it from me beat it to within a breath of its life-
Years later and realising the collector scene was in full swing and nib kits were still in circulation i simply had to relive the memory and own one all over again. I tracked down a new built car and even got it with a very nice kit box to boot! I also got hold of a Kamtec shell and had a go at painting a box art paint scheme.
Not happy with just owning a sweet new built i also had to have a runner. This time I got an absolute junker in a trade with a mate and needless to say pretty much half the car went into the trash. After sourcing a nib belt conversion set ( and taking out a bank loan ),a complete new set of alloy chassis bits, universal swing shafts front and rear, Option House Gold Shocks, hardened final pinion,48dp spur set and a few other odds and ends and i was set with a cool vintage racer. Ive driven this car a whole heap and had a ball with it. Its been great reliving old memories-

Damnit I'm jealous...

I have just inherited an Optima Pro but it needs some serious work to get it ready.
As my Yoke 870c is now race-able maybe I'll have to make a start on it.

It certainly won't end up as good as that though...

Twister 20-05-2009 11:35 AM

Bormac you must be the ultimate vintageguy on this planet.. i'm very impressed and please keep it up . Does anyone know if you can fit uj:s on a Ultima the first version? Got ispired to build me an vintageracer too. Cheers

Hi Optiman, nope, still have it. I made another bodyshell for it, nothing fancy, a Marwan repro. It is now fitted with a MC116 I used on my Egress back in the days. I'd like to fit a better steering though, I have to think about it.

Why, may I ask? :)

tintin74 02-08-2014 07:03 PM

Hey, How are you doing, I love your Optima JPS, its really original, and I would love to post it on my Dedicated Optima Site: www.kyosho-optima.fr/photos

Of course, I will give you full credit and link.

And if you could make a nice picture with a neat background that would be great!!!

Thanks, love that car.

I see you have a complete TOMS and one missing wheels, are they both built with the Kyosho carbon chassis?

DanB4 03-08-2014 08:59 AM

Hi Dan,

The one with wheels is full carbon fibre which a friend CNC cut for me - it's very pretty.

The one without wheels is actually a Custom with my old runner shell, I just fitted the custom special shell to my modified LWB runner so thought I'd build up a custom with the spare 'special' shell.

I have 2 pairs of NIP yellow option house rims for it too.

Dan

HKS_TRD 03-08-2014 10:24 PM

I like the stripes on the custom special shell. I believe in catalog pics the shell had different decals to the box art.
I would still love to get the TOMS stickers the prototype had made, it looks more like the turbo. Look up the magazine scans I posted here and you will see what I mean.
I still haven't painted a shell lol

DanB4 04-08-2014 05:12 AM

Got a link?

+1

Always interested to see new or different body decal/paint ideas.

HKS_TRD 04-08-2014 09:40 AM

Check for threads started by me, its the turbo mid sp magazine scan thread. I would paste the link but I'm at work on my phone

OptimaFan 04-08-2014 10:43 AM

Found it: http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107272

Any ideas what the colors of the stripes were?

HKS_TRD 04-08-2014 12:37 PM

Unfortunately no, and haven't seen any color pics :-(
If you look closely you can see it is complete stripes going from the tops to the sides, I suspect the bits that can only be seen in some pics are yellow, that might help explain the yellow wheels

The decals themselves don't look overly complex

OptimaFan 04-08-2014 12:49 PM

It seems the stripes are 2 or 3 color, about a cm from the edge the color changes, and this can also be seen on the sides, so it's not a matter of reflection. Maybe yellow or white body with couple of different tones of blue, like the Ultima II?

HKS_TRD 04-08-2014 12:58 PM

The only other pic is this one here

http://www.retromodelisme.com/scan_p...o-page-27.html

Now not sure if this brochure is included with the Turbo Optima Mid Special and maybe someone with a NIB kit has a better chance of figuring out the colors

It seems even the decals infront of the windscreen are a single stripe with the centre part a lighter color

I think we really need to try and get these decals made

DanB4 04-08-2014 04:33 PM

My NIB one is in the UK so I won't be able to check it for a while but thanks for sharing as I haven't seen that before!
