Mid-2 sx

heres my attempt at making 2wd mid motor, i've used a T4 for the donor chassis, i just need to remake the white plastic prototype chassis plate in carbon fibre, and sort out some battery straps,

I'm gonna wait till the outdoor season starts, i've got a few extra things i'm gonna work on before its ready;), possibly a carbon fibre tub chassis :thumbsup:

J_WOODY 04-03-2009 03:41 PM

ok, a little update on whats hopefully happening with this creation.

* carbon fibre tub chassis / 2 in the process of being made ...2wks away (will fit stick or saddle pack)

* carbon fibre battery brace .... 2wks away

* a new custom made front bulkhead, c/f top plate with additional inner camber mount holes, a new c/f shock tower with additional shock mounting positions, and the shocks to the front of the tower, this new front end will have adjustable width and rake .....prototype 3/4 wks away....this new front end will also fit a B4 and X-6

* the plan is, that the only B4 parts to be usd on this car are the front wishbones, castor blocks, steering arms and servo saver assembly.

please bear in mind that this creation is being made for my own pleasure and could end up being rubbish

the next update will be once the chassis' are made, the photos will first appear on oOple .

Wow looks cool dude,I've got my own CAT based 2WD in the plans but as yet it's only on paper, it's a bit of a mish mash at the moment with several ideas for the front end and a re-designed gearbox housing :D. Keep us posted as to how it handles.

loadsa money:lol: chassis no.3 will be a revision of the first 2, and will fit the new gearbox housing thats coming soon, and have better weight distribution:thumbsup:

J_WOODY 07-03-2009 04:37 PM

it works !

Quick update:
the first chassis is done, i've given it a quick run on wet tarmac, and so far it all seems ok. it accelerated straight, and its turns in without losing the tail end (slight understeer), although the rear does feel very light. i'll be adding some extra weight on it for tomorrow, at the moment theres none.
i'll upload a photo soon,

Made by moi, and i also made the 4 part mould myself, (i've done toolmaking before)
it was cost of materials only,
and its a cat xls repro shell by kamtec.

Does that mean you'd be able to make me a carbon chassis of my slim B4?? Or would it be a lot of hassle?

bring it with you tomorrow, and i'll look it over, there's a good chance its do-able, if yours uses a standard b4 rear, it can be done with modifications

Tom3012 07-03-2009 07:45 PM

cool... its basically a B4 with the sides cut off to make it slimmer :p

any idea how much it would cost? roughly...

1st race update : southport indoors

took it out in practice, with worn minipins, and added approx 80grams in weight to the rear, and it was surprisingly good for a first run, althoudh the rear end did feel lose. i passed the transmitter to the local quickest driver, he took it out for a few laps, and pushed it a lot harder than i could, Chris's comment was that it needed new tyres on the rear, to stop it stepping out. so for the heats i put some new rubber on.
I'd entered into the 4wd heat, just in case it broke, and so i could finish the meeting with the SX. All 3 rounds i performed very consistantly, and i was giving some of the 4wd's a run for there money. The cars got loads of turn in and putting new tyres on really helped, and allowed me to push it a little harder.
i also passed the transmitter to Baz Weldon after the first round, and he said it drives similar to an x-6, but its a bit light at the rear, all in all, i'm VERY happy with it, considering i did nothing with the set up.
the next thing to happen with this creation, will be chassis no.2 for the test driver and then new gearbox housing, which will move the the weight further back.. i can't wait.

Jay:D

the car looked really promising today on the track

thanks Tom, its a pity i didn't have the balls to do the double that eveyone else was doing, i was losing loads of time through that section, people were just jumping over me, and then i'd get them back through the next section... good fun out handling 4wd's though:thumbsup:, even Sx's

Wacker 2 08-03-2009 08:25 PM

Looks great... Im doing a simular thing myself, am in the middle of developing a carbon fibre chassis for the X6 to allow a saddle pack lipo rather than 1 long one from left to right... plus it will look pimp like yours and my mates S2.

I was looking at using Fibrelite as I beleive it is them that make the carbon fibre chassis for the atomic carbon S2.

I've got some prototype alloy peices being made as we speak and then its just sorting out the chassis. It will be a tub chassis, flat at the rear but will need a kick up at the front simular to the X6 and the B4 (not sure of the exact angle of kick up)

it was on one of my vintage schueys, i ended designing the mid-2 chassis to fit that shell.... its my alltime favourite shell.

i'll be sending a shell your way soon, once i've designed it:lol:

Looking nice fella, the build quality looks really good from the pics, just like an off the shelf conversion kit .

91notch5.0 12-03-2009 02:41 AM

very impressed by the way you kept the shocks in front of the arms also... BIG THUMBS UP!!

J_WOODY 15-03-2009 04:51 PM

ok, a little update on how this projects going:

since the first track tests, a lot of things have been changed to the set up, they are:
swapped rear wishbones round, modified the rear shock mount so the shocks are now to the rear of the wishbones, i've increased anti squat, and gone from a red spring to yellow at the rear, shortened the wheelbase by 2mm, and removed all additional weight, all of these changes have made the car a lot easier to drive, and less nervous, it now likes to be pushed, and only felt a little unstable under hard braking.

its getting better , i can't wait to race it outdoors:D
