The Yankee Doodle dandy rc10 build

Ok here we go , it's my rc10 classic rebuild , an impulse buy as I wanted an original rc10 to race , impulse buys can be two things , your Best Buy or your worst , I think this was the latter ,on a plus side it's an early A stamped chassis .

Pics below of how it came to me and hence the title when you see the paint scheme .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psacehe11z.jpg

Progress will be slow , but I started it months ago so I have some pics , but hope to have it finished before the outdoor Season starts .

My main plan for the build is to keep it as original as possible but to make it reliable and to cope with brushless power .

First up was to find and fit a stealth transmission unit .

My good friend Andrew supplied the parts .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psm6gybpei.jpg

Chassis needs drilling to accept the transmission , also supplied by Andrew and an A stamped chassis too .

I found the best way to clean up the white nylon parts was , to put them in boiling hot water with a mix of fairly liquid and vanish and left them to soak over night , unfortunately I don't own a dish washer otherwise I'd have used that method .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psgzsgegm7.jpg

They came up better than I thought .

Can't beat a sweet rear end .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psfuqazygg.jpg

This is as far as I've got now .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psgm4jqwue.jpg

I need to put spacers between the shock piston to limit the movement of the shock and some O rings to space out the drive shafts to make them sit centrally in the out drives .

fidspeed 31-12-2016 12:41 PM

good on yer matey
no it may never be a shelf queen but who gives a damn I have a similar rc 10 lurking in a box which may or may not get similar treatment

if you wanna shelf queen buy a new one and save it . Don't get me wrong I also love looking at the painstakingly accurate rebuilds some guys have done and there impressive creations . I have one or two nice vintage cars and a lot awaiting some TLC but I doubt any will be worthy of "shelf queen" status

I too have boughts some "dogs" but also been fortunate to buy other peoples pride and joy

always remember we are only temporarily looking after them till someone else does !!

regards and keep going

Dave

Looks nice matey.

I think you have Andys white arms on the front of that and a nice Parma clear gear cover.

Will be nice to see the finish....

looking really good there!! certainly puts mine to shame.....

peetbee 24-01-2017 10:55 PM

Looking nice, if you want to keep the driveshafts central and can't get hold of the kit springs (#6372) then 1/2 a ballpoint pen spring in either side pretty much does the same job :)

Thanks Pete , I've ordered (#6372) and thanks for the tip regarding a ballpoint pen Spring

More trick bits on their way

They look cracking matey.

Just a tip for you Kev. If your keeping the standard steering bellcranks, fit a zip tie either side of the saver arm.

We used to do this back in the day to take the slop/play out of it if your running it.

Looking good matey...........

dodgydiy 31-01-2017 07:50 PM

or tight rubber o rings to stiffen the steering up without losing the servo saver action altogether

Cheers Sooty :)

xfactor 31-01-2017 08:19 PM

What we used to do was fit zip ties to lock the saver up. This will give you positive steering left and right.

Then I used to run a Kimbro servo saver on the servo.

But did go on to use the R.W ballraced steering. Like so many did.

I've made some more nice aluminium parts , this time slotted spring perches .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps4onvp2tr.jpg

Look good all fitted :)

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psp5yijbkj.jpg

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psho41teyp.jpg

I mock fitted the steering servo to work out the best place to run my shortie lipo's .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps9w4qfbyq.jpg

I think where I have it located in the above pic will give me the best balance , I'll need to make something to hold the Lipo in place , but I have a plan ;)

peetbee 01-02-2017 03:53 PM

Liking the alloy bits!

I've been running my shorty lipo in the standard position behind the servo, which leaves plenty of space between lipo and rear bulkhead for a pile of lead weights!
Others have fitted their electrics in that space, but I feel it needs the weight. Needs weight in the nose too.

Rs fruitbat 01-02-2017 07:55 PM

Thanks for the info Pete , I might try it first where your running yours and go from there , can't wait to use it and see what it's like

Welshy40 01-02-2017 08:09 PM

Nice, are you dipping the shocks into something to take the rest of the stuff original coating off as well?

I may de-anodise them completely and polish them , I'm not 100% sure yet

As you see them on the car is how they came to me .

Rs fruitbat 05-02-2017 03:28 PM

After much deliberation, I decided where I wanted the battery to sit , so I masked up the chassis and drilled and counter sunk the new holes , I used two original plastic battery mounts , one I had to cut down to fit the shortie as it was too long when they were butted up togeather.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...psxybixath.jpg

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps2a59lmdv.jpg

I'm not to sure on the battery clamp ? Opinions / suggestions welcome .

I was thinking of cutting the clamp flush where it's bolted on now and then making another clamp from the left over carbon ? Or not ?

I've been thinking about that  but carbon looks so nice :)

Roscopeco 05-02-2017 11:09 PM

Looking good Kev mate , nice machining as always :D

peetbee 07-02-2017 12:09 AM

Carbon fibre to match the rest of the car I think would look great for the battery strap! But definitely to fit the 4 screw holes in those battery trays (please stop using Phillips screws though!):woot:

I like the idea of polishing the shocks to match your alloy bits. Talking of which....

I've taken a look through my spares box and have a spare set of RW steering, but there's a catch!
It only has one alloy post and that one looks like one of the threads has stripped, they could do with a clean up too.
But if you fancy making the new posts then you're welcome to have them, pm me your address and I'll pop them in the post

I've made some nice carbon fibre battery clamps and some aluminium thumbscrews :) I made 5 thumbscrews so that I can keep one in the pit box as a spare .

The custom carbon straps look sweet Kev :)

Rs fruitbat 18-02-2017 05:35 PM

Pete kindly donate a RW vintage steering set up , unfortunately the threads in the aluminium bush had stripped , but Pete knew I'd be able to work my magic and sort out the threads ;)

I had a think about how I could make the system better , so I made some threaded top hat bushes ,you can see the original bush in the pic .

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...pssytfhrad.jpg

All fitted and now I have a ballraced steering set up .
