Rory Culls 93 worlds car

Well this car sort of found me rather than me hunting for it. I was contacted on Facebook by a guy wanting to pick my brain about some cars that he had got from his uncle.
After a few messages he stated sending my pics of the cars and then this one pic came through and I spotted somthing in the background, which turned out to be a Rory Cull shell as that was his cousin. And a few more messages and then the pics of a couple of Yokomo's came through that were in desperate need of tlc and then I spotted this
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psxgjbmafl.jpg

So this really got my attention so on further examination it turned out to be a 93WCS! Then it hit me and I remembered the thread on here about Rory's paint scheme and looked for it and this picture
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psxtptt05g.jpg

So a couple more messages and it turned out he had the shell too! Well obviously I tried to buy it then but he wouldn't sell it but said if he did I had first dibs.
So Saturday I got another message saying he was thinking of selling another car he had but was unsure as he liked it then joked he should sell the other cars. Well I jumped at the chance and a deal was done but not just for the worlds car but for Rory's old works 93 too!! Plus a couple of other bits that he had which turned out to be loads.
In the box I got a massive stash of wheels

A NIP Protech body set
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psdlqgqgnj.jpg

2 used shells and selection of undertrays the protech on the right is the actual shell that was run at the 93 worlds on the WCS

http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psuc9bgsre.jpg
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...pssdfap542.jpg

So the car itself like I said they both need tlc which they will get
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psfgx1lhwr.jpg

There's a little more left of te works 93 but that's a whole other car
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...pso10qb5ua.jpg

Looks like Masami wasn't the only one having trouble with stones at Basildon. This has a custom rear tower and camber link maybe Craig Dresher's dad made them as I know he use to make them parts for there cars.
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psfmyhueus.jpg

It's also had the step smoothed out of the bulkhead
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psctorl9s6.jpg

Few more pics

http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...pskugf1z9k.jpg
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...pswgrrdx04.jpg

Apparently Rory finished 19th which is a dam sight better than I would of done
I am over the moon to have somthing with this history in my collection and I hope you all like the pics

Seen better days I'm always amazed when people sell cars like this why on earth would you get rid of a car that you raced in the world champs mad

How much did it cost ;)

RJJ 30-01-2016 11:20 AM

Very cool and another epic find Justin

racingdwarf 30-01-2016 11:53 AM

Nice find you lucky git! They look a lot more tired and un loved than when I last would have seen those cars and shells track side, quite a bit of work for you there.

It's a great find and I am lucky, the hard part is going to be replacing it with the correct parts it had.

Welshy40 31-01-2016 06:20 AM

Blimey, i raced most probably against both cars in those pictures, yup basildon track was a nightmare at the warm ups as they had to use gravel due to the rain. Amazed he didnt keep them. Justin your a jammy git, really jammy.

OldTimer 31-01-2016 11:36 AM

Looking forward to see them in a restored condition, should look awesome.

I can remember racing at the Warm Up meeting at Basildon to, and camping there with a leaky tent lol :woot:

£15 a pair but I might of sold the lot to a guy I'll let you know

DerbyDan 01-02-2016 11:24 AM

Find of the decade Justin!

What to do with them.... its a very good question!

I'd be so tempted to rebuild the Works & race the car... I'm guessing this would have been a car that Rory would have run at UK national events... so would have less provenance than say the WCS - but one perhaps that Rory himself would have had more affection for?

The WCS is a tricky one - the car (or what remains of it) Looks to have received some home-made parts (poss crafted by Craig Drescher's dad?) Since the car had raced at the Worlds. The photo of the car on the grid seems to show the 'standard' 93WCS rear end - with white bulkhead cap & 'eared' horizontal inner camber link set-up, The home made parts converts that rear end to something similar to the set-up that 1st appeared on the 94 YZ-10. Do you revert it back to the spec of the car on the grid at the Worlds - or simply rebuild the car as it currently stands, adding the missing parts to make it a rolling chassis again?

Rory was Mr consistant and was what put him into all the national A finals he entered into. Great driver and great find, id do it up and wouldnt race it, rare big time.

daz75 01-02-2016 11:51 AM

The pic at the world's also has white shock towers

Peakey 01-02-2016 12:22 PM

It's definitely got the white cap on but it's also running the black rear tower there's a better pic here

http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psocccn80t.jpg

As for rebuilding that will take some planing and searching I think but it will never get raced again to be fair

DerbyDan 01-02-2016 01:38 PM

Do you know I've never seen the Model Cars Magazine report of the 93 Worlds... that's a great scan & awesome to see that image of Craig's WCS from the event... so much emphisis was put on Masami's Worlds winning car that it seems finding images of any of the others are so few & far between.

Its quite clear that the rear tower on Rory's car was/is black but the rear upper link connection looks to me, to be the std 93WCS arrangement;)

Peakey 01-02-2016 07:38 PM

You've got better eyes than me Dan! I can't make the ZD-30 camber link but I can see there's nothing over the bulkhead cap.
From looking at the cars in the artical most of the WCS's had standard front ends the most change I can see it carbon front towers but it seems to be the rears that have been modded so they may of been struggling to get the rear sorted?

daz75 02-02-2016 04:59 PM

Wonder if mine has loads of carbon on it due to being a ex team drivers car or something would love to know who my dad bought it off at the time assuming it was second hand

It would help if you found some pics of yours from when you had it if you could find some. If it was second hand maybe it came with another shell?

daz75 03-02-2016 12:33 AM

Was a long time ago mate not sure about photos don't remember a different shell either lol

Peakey 16-04-2016 11:07 AM

I took the car out the garage the other night and then decided to do a little with it. So after a lot of thought I just decided to give it a little tidy up and start to rebuild it the main problem I can see I'm going to have is the M2 slipper so if anyone has s M2 slipper plate then that would be a great help.

http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psikepzmbt.jpg

Modded rear hub
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psljnpz2je.jpg

Luckily the lightweight rear diff is in
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psbcn0n6bl.jpg
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psea6o4wrj.jpg

So it's had a little clean and tidy up
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psjqwaarw3.jpg

Improvised front diff for now till I find the correct one
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psxamafn7e.jpg
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...ps42kpns42.jpg

No more rusty shafts or roll bar
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...pswzklyc1q.jpg

That's as far as I got for now but if anyone has a M2 slipper plate or could point me in the direction of one would be a great help, or if they made a M2 hardened gear like they did with the M3 that's changable that would be perfect. The same if anyone has a M2 lightweight WCS front diff knocking around (I know massive long shot but worth a try)

DanB4 18-04-2016 10:41 AM

I had all that mate remember all NIP, pretty much gave it away!

zzzubbb 18-04-2016 02:10 PM

I used Autosol buddy and ran the driveshafts and wing mounts in a drill

zzzubbb 19-04-2016 12:45 PM

Buddy,

M2 spur adapter here..

Dadio 19-04-2016 03:15 PM

thats cleaning up nicely ,caustic soda also takes the oxide of aluminium but don't leave the parts in too long as it will eat them eventually ,good for bits you can't spin up in a chuck to polish ,wire wool's good too.

mporter2000 19-04-2016 06:13 PM

For plastics you can start with trying a dishwasher ,obvoiusly not on lexan/polycarbonate or anything electrical though ,put the parts in the cutlery tray when the wife's out .
